If he had done the job sensibly, he would have got a shovel full of fire off the loco crew to get things going in the van stove - and bucket of coal off the tender! Regards Chris H Quite so, but as has been pointed out, somebody has nicked the fire irons! Unless..... Having started his fire, he's on his way back to return the fire irons, hence no guard in the van and no fire irons on the engine. I think you've cracked it! 4

RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted January 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29, 2021 When I was a goods guard on a preserved railway the first job was to get the stove going and then get the coal bin topped up, before sorting out the train. 5

RMweb Gold GWR57xx Posted January 30, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 30, 2021 Looks like the photographer has a very slow shutter finger as he/she’s missed the engine every time and just caught the back of the tender. 1

In the basket is his venerable Thornton Pickard Victo Camera and associated paraphernalia. Rob. 2 3

It was quite a hefty beast even though it was compact for its time. However, I'm not a rivet counter, so I'm not going to cast doubt upon the view that the long bag contains his ahem, nor mention that it is a scale 3" too short for that. It also seems that he has mislaid his padded bag of glass slides. Maybe he's just going fishing. Maybe I'm not entering into the spirit of things. Maybe he's just a model and we're all being fooled into thinking otherwise. RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted January 31, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 31, 2021 Or write up his journal at the desk, having just given the driver the ‘tip’. It looks like a warm day, and if it’s a short run he probably won’t bother with the stove.
