RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted September 13, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2017 The tunnel at Pontarddulais is the oldest NR maintained tunnel in Wales, dating from 1839. There can't be many other tunnels older than this on NR's assets? Network Rail Sprinter 950.001 approaches the tunnel 24Jan17.

I have now given the set to the National Archive. 2-2-2 Wigmore Castle, Box, c1893 Edited September 13, 2017 by phil_sutters
eastwestdivide
Since I mentioned Strood tunnel just now, it would be a shame not to include it, here in 1984, showing the sharp curve of the rail line exiting the tunnel to avoid a watery grave in the basin that remained until about 1985.
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted September 13, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) I offer a not very clear picture of the North end of Birmingham New St station with the two tunnel mouths side by side. The LH tunnel being Holliday St Tunnel (MR) and curves around to the left and North Tunnel (LNWR) which runs fairly straight. (Originally taken for the skyline which has changed much since) Note bus on bridge - extra points scored Keith Edited September 13, 2017 by melmerby

NorthBrit
Tunnel at Villefranche-Sur-Mer on the way to Nice. I do like the ornate nature of the entrance. It could possibly make an excellent model. Anyone interested in the challenge?

RMweb Gold 96701 Posted September 13, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) Q: when does a bridge become a tunnel? Please don't start this discussion. The simple answer as far as Network Rail's railway is concerned is "if the Sectional Appendix calls it a tunnel, it is a tunnel". All sorts of people have discussed this for years, and if somebody comes with a definition, somebody else gives an example of a tunnel that doesn't meet the criteria.
