I offer a not very clear picture of the North end of Birmingham New St station with the two tunnel mouths side by side.

The LH tunnel being Holliday St Tunnel (MR) and curves around to the left and North Tunnel (LNWR) which runs fairly straight.

(Originally taken for the skyline which has changed much since)

Q: when does a bridge become a tunnel? :mosking:

Please don't start this discussion. The simple answer as far as Network Rail's railway is concerned is "if the Sectional Appendix calls it a tunnel, it is a tunnel". All sorts of people have discussed this for years, and if somebody comes with a definition, somebody else gives an example of a tunnel that doesn't meet the criteria.
