Tug 40 on stone empties at Marple in August 2011. Possibly the Oakleigh - Tunstead 6H03.

The footbridge is long gone and no Tugs on the stone train I see these days.

This could have gone in at least three threads, note the obligatory bus on the A626 Brabyns Brow bridge in the background.

Jacob's Ladder West Ealing in the background

post-11293-0-64572900-1505408808_thumb.jpg

For those that don't know the background -

Back in the day, the DafT were shamed into having to provide a ‘parliamentary bus’ from Ealing to Wandsworth Road after Virgin withdrew their passenger service over part of the route in 2007 and created a possible closure by stealth. This ultimately attracted film crews from around the globe, not to mention plenty of gricers.

Some bright spark then realised that with the upcoming Southern franchise renewal they could tack the requirement to reinstate the actual rail service into the franchise requirement – presumably civil servants thinking ‘we’re sure the railway train companies can do something’

In the event Southern were going to use a spare 171 unit that was at Selhurst during the daytime. Driver training started between Selhurst and West Ealing but then the TOCs and FOCs who used the West London Line and GWML complained to ORR that if a 171 failed there was nothing that could rescue it for hours on end, so the driver training was abruptly halted. (I assume for some reason they couldn’t roster a pair of 171’s in multiple).

Southern then intended to use 377’s to Acton or Ealing (not sure if this ever happened) but in the event ran services Wandsworth Road-Olympia (see attached). The DafT then went through the proper consultation process and the service was formally withdrawn 2012/2013.

Taking the lead from Mike's old and new photos here are some views from Exeter Central,

first the old concrete footbridge at the New North Road end of the station which was manufactured at Exmouth Junction.

This could have gone in the tunnel section as well.

Another before and after to start with - Forest Hill - a local station when we lived in London.

Lewes' bridge is at road level and has four sets of steps and a long ramp - as well as the more recently installed lifts, which seem to be out of order quite often.

Now for some of Dad's mono photos

I suppose in my picture strictly speaking that isn't the tunnel mouth itself but the raft over the tracks to support the building above!

I assume the original tunnel mouth is still there?

Cheers
