Well a quick clean up this evening after watching the last episode of Game of Thrones, needed to keep myself busy from swearing at the TV!

Its amazing what happens when you can actually see your layout! Couple of pics to show how it’s going.

Everything’s running fine, I would have liked to have fixed the south end up lines fiddleyard entrance but that will have to wait until after the BRMA day, better to have something running then not at all!

Wouldn't work Richard - Australian models are H0.

Not necessarily. If you model in oo then track gauge correct. It would not be a straight transfer of prototype dimensions, but measurements taken off the model in mm could be divided by 4 to get what the wheel base etc would be in 4mm/ft.

by the way I really like the openness and flow to the landscape.

Richard, I thought you were talking about modifying Jesse's new loco, which is H0 hence my comment. A 00 model would of course, apart from the track gauge, be 8/7 the size in all dimensions.

Busy evening, I fixed the south end UP fiddleyard entrance, the one I mentioned to John that I wouldn’t do yet, well, it was easier then I thought. Everything runs even better now through there, no problems at all.

The lines that are fixed were the two entrances to kick back sidings, one via the crossover pictured at the top and the other under the window sill. This also meant that I could extend fiddleyard line number 1, which now holds the coal train.

Travelling around the top of the fiddleyard, through line number 0, are the two “play trains” sets I have, which are the BR Blue 80s and 1950’s trains. They ran round excellently at speed, with no problems!

Thought I would show where the two out of era trains are parked, which is underneath the scenic section itself. Which I can see where to stop them by a mirror on the wall and LED strips.

thats all for now,

cheers

The wiring is now finished, only cleaning the railway room and the track is needed before the BRMA running day.

I spent yesterday helping out my local hobby store at one of the exhibitions in Blacktown over the weekend, but it didn’t stop me walking around and purchasing a few bits and bobs. I did go a bit naughty and purchased a NSW loco, couldn’t help myself.

just need to add some cab numbers and she’s ready to roll, Aussie loco hauling a British coal train? Why not aye!!

I've just posted on another thread.

I run a Broadway N&W A Class on a train of Bachmann steel Wagons, so you can do it!!!!!

The locomotive is georgeous, being a closet freelance railway nut, I can think of all sorts good things I could do with that gem!!!

I won't ask how much, but oh... tempting!!!

Your cutting shots are fantastic!!

Well, BRMA running session this Saturday, so the track just got a major clean, all I need to do is vacuum the floor and possibly a drop wire or two in the tunnel.

Don't clean it..put some graphite on it - doesn't affect traction and gets rid of loco stuttering...as per Mike Edge on Herculaneum and also on Carlisle

But not too much. A foot or so on each rail leaving the fiddle yards should do. You can get graphite sticks from Riot or other art shops.

I put graphite everywhere, haven't cleaned any loco wheels for more than three years and nothing stalls or needs finger poking.

Thanks Mike. I get the same results with just the small areas I mentioned. Must be our lovely clean Antipodean air...

Well it was an excellent running session on Saturday, apart from this short circuit fault that i will be investigating this week, Everything went rather well.

Many thanks to those who came, here's a picture from before anyone turned up.

G'Day Folks

You should be able to downsize them. Right click on the picture, then look for the 'EDIT', click that, that should open up the editing page. I usually take mine down to 18%, which will be around 250kb.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, I've finally worked out how to resize some photos, so here are some from the BRMA running session. I haven't done much on the layout the last few weeks as I needed a much deserved break. However, I have decided on the new exhibition layout I will be building with my friends at Woodpecker Model Railways, Allington Junction, which has its own thread here: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/145212-allington-junction/&tab=comments#comment-3581612 .

It will be a slow process, but progress never the less. I started on a SEF J39 the other day which will be used for both layouts, some kit building stock progress photos or write ups may be on the Allington Junction topic thread, so if you follow both you won't miss out.

On to the photos.........

Here we have a Raven A2 '2400' CITY OF NEWCASTLE thundering past towards Grantham with a parcels train.

Cameraman number 2 has waited patiently and is rewarded by the sight of this C1 hauling the Yorkshire Pullman, whilst the private Ironstone line is busy with a few wagons.

Now hearing a distinctive whistle, he turns to see an A4, '4491' COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA, hammering past him south with an express.

Now all the excitements done for the day, he snaps this humble working of an 04, working a heavy coal train under 'Bleesing's Road' bridge.

and now for the last photo, the gang, a few of us still watching trains go by at the end of the day. L-R, Rodney, Alan, Chris and John (St Enodoc), John please correct me if I have names wrong.

I thought so...

Yes, I eliminated everything until it came down to the single slip in the junction, I realised I didn't need it so pulled it up, have yet to put a point in as a replacement. Thanks for the help with it all John.

Many thanks again gents, it was a lovely day.

In your response to your request on Wright Writes, Jesse,

Some comments on the pictures...............

Firstly, well done! The depth of field is excellent, and the composition is very good.

I think what you need to do is 'lift some shadows', particularly on the 'underneath' parts of the locos and stock. Your general exposures are very good, but a couple of tips (if I may, please?) with regard to lightening the 'nether regions'.

As you know, I use pulses of fill-in flash to lighten shadows underneath footplates/solebars/etc. I can do this because of long exposures - typically four/five seconds at F32 - and a very powerful Metz gun. I fire the Metz independently, aiming it at the shadows. Four/five pulses at F8 usually does the trick, without altering the overall exposure. Now the rub! A big Metz gun is not cheap, and is usually the kit of professional photographers.

So, how to lighten those shadows without forking out loads of bucks (assuming you can find a Metz 60)? Get a fairly powerful torch and aim it at the shadows during the exposures, moving it from side to side as you do. Set the ISO on your camera to its lowest setting, with the aperture at its smallest. This will enable you to have long exposures, with plenty of time for torch-work.

You know the following pictures, of course - your splendid A4 romping through Little Bytham! The shadows were softened by using the Metz.

One other thing you might attempt in the fullness of time is to take out the backgrounds in Photoshop. When you're over here in the autumn, I'll show you how.

Please send my very best wishes to all the chaps.

Regards,

Tony.

P.S. I must go now. I've got six P4 modellers visiting LB today. It MUST be on its best behaviour!
