I need to go back tomorrow with my "office" varifocals; with my "driving" variofocals I'm having to get down and squint at the wagons too much.

Immensely enjoyable. Some superb pre-Grouping layouts: Benfieldside, Lee-on-Solent, Valleyfields and of course for me Midland Sidings with Midland wagons galore. BR period layouts need to have some really distinctive character to work for me (personal tast - of course the modelling is first rate): Clutton this time looking fresher and making a better impression than at Scaleforum at Stoke Mandeville where it seemed to me to be looking a bit tired. I think I need to look for longer at Black Lion Crossing to work out what's going on. Flintcombe very nice to look at but a bit let down by the passenger stock - converted RTR vehicles. Surrey Arms I felt could do with more intensive operation - the track layout has scope for simultaneous comings and goings. Tucking Mill would be impressive in any scale.

Back again today. (it's only 15 min drive from home!) Clutton has quite a substantial lighting rig but I think the reason it made a better impression than when I saw it at Stoke Mandeville is that the Bracknell hall has much more natural light.

Thanks for the comment. Spot on about the hall lighting, but I didn't notice any real natural light, just the roof tubes. The layout is no different to when you saw it at Stoke Mandeville, just some routine maintenance on the track has been done.

Dinghams - that's what I came away with (figuratively not physically - there weren't any for sale). Couplings that actually use the drawbar hook for its intended purpose rather than doubling it up with a duplicate hook in the wrong plane.

That and some other interesting items that will be on my wagon-building thread in a little while (half-term looms).

does anyone know what the difference is between Expo EM and Scaleforum?, apart from you will be hard pressed to find an EM layout at Scaleforum.

question asked with total respect for both EM and Scalefour.

I mean no offence in any way.

Several differences, mainly date and location. The most obvious is that the EMGS covers both EM and P4, while the S4 Society restricts itself to P4.  Other wise the shows are fairly comparable with most of the traders being the same at both.

The locations and dates give a fairly good geographical coverage across the year for those that want to get personal contact with the 4mm finescale suppliers.

ha ha, I fell for that, its the imbalance, more P4 than EM layouts and yet its Expo EM, perhaps a name change for the Exhibition, Expo EM/P4?, it will be quality,

that's guaranteed.

thank you for the kind replies :-)

Well, there's scope for ambiguity in Scale-four-um...

Except that the event organised by the Scalefour Society is called Scaleforum, and always has been.

Sorry if you're missing my feeble attempt at humour. The scope for ambiguity is in the "um" - implying 4 mm/ft but which standard?

My experience of Scaleforum at Stoke Mandeville and ExpoEM at Bracknell, which, along with Railex at Stoke Mandeville and Warley at the NEC are the large exhibitions I get to, is that there is more emphasis on the "exhibition" aspect at ExpoEM - more layouts, more demonstrators, possibly. Scaleforum is, I suspect, more of a get-together for Society members. I'm not a member of either Society but I enjoy and spend money at both shows - though the range of specialist traders and quality of modelling is just as high at Railex.
