Coming along nicely. I would recommend Polycarb(onate) over Perspex for a cover. It is stronger and more scratch resistant, which is why it is used extensively on machinery guarding.

Hi Dave,

Thanks, I have some 4mm Perspex already, will look at polycarbonate too. 👍

A small distraction from the storage yard has been fitting Dapol IOAs with hunt elite pivoting couplings, these wagons have been quite troublesome with normal Rapido’s and the gradients on the layout, hopefully they’ll settle down now.

Point work is all done, think I may need another 25 yards of track though!

Did my fiddle yard in what code 80 I had kicking around, 12 through roads and 3 dead ends, mistakenly thought I had enough, ended up having to buy more. They do consume vast quantities of track, and now wishing I had doubled it in size...

Hello all,

 what’s going on here then….. ?

The plan ( there is one honestly ) is to build something that resembles Old Oak Commons turntable, before it disappeared!
It will serve a few purposes, firstly another scenic section that is independent from the main layout, a nice area to show off the locos and also photograph them, it will also do exactly what it says on the tin, the storage yard will be hidden behind and when I want change engines it gives a genuine reason for a depot, everyone’s a winner. 👍

Aiming for something like this, although I’d love to fill it 37s 47s 50s etc it will probably be more 66 orientated.

Hello all,

 A nice little delivery today.

Shed for the depot.

Did a deal with a fellow modeller and now have two beautifully resprayed mk2s in Caledonian purple.

Also had a very nice surprise when I opened the package,  15 JGA Tarmac wagons! These are 3d prints by Nick Evans and are excellent, I’ve only given them a brief test run so far but they will definitely get put through there paces on Stanley Bridge.

Now the depot shed is here I can lay the tracks to the turntable and get everything fitted into place.

That's a really nice idea Graham, I like that. Great use of space and some additional interest to the layout.

All the best,

Dave

Hello all,

Not had a great deal of time on the layout this week but have managed to glue in place the first sections of track, fit the turntable and start playing around with buildings, walls etc.

Depot shunter is first on the table.

I’ve got two, Archie the ginger one is definitely a railway cat, always wants to be involved and see what’s going on which is great, his brother Dexter is not interested in the slightest! Although when they where kittens it was different.

Hello all,

One of the less exciting jobs today, fitting check rails to the turntable sidings, once glued in place plugging the gap with blue tack ready for the whole area to be covered in decorators filler.

On a plus note a new loco has joined the fleet which has been running in whilst I’m working.

Hello all,

Various jobs are in progress and todays highlight was fitting 4 decoders to a pair of Farish 350’s, what an absolute nightmare! An hour spent trying to remove / re attach the body’s without damaging them! I still need to detail the outer ends and change the couplings but my patience has been pushed a bit so it’ll wait.

A few new additions too.

That 37 is a great model isn't it 👍 and you've made the perfect layout to watch trains go by. The use of space to make something out if the fiddle yard is very clever and coming along nicely. Will you landscape/detail this area with hard standing and sheds etc?

All the best,

Dave

Hi Dave, thanks 👍

The fiddle yard ( Dust sidings ) will be surrounded with timber frame and topped off with Perspex to protect the trains, it will be lit to aid viewing.

The yard/loco area will have scenery, loosely based on Old Oak Common.
little bit hard to explain exactly but the main layout and yard will be merged together via a hill/trees, a backscene will flow over both of them also disguising the fiddle yard. In the photo the red line is roughly where it will be.

Hello all,

Smaller jobs underway whilst I put off wiring the fiddle yard! Changing couplings again to the Hunt magnets, made quite a difference to the 350. 👌

I need to either scratch build or source a pair sharfenberg couplings for the outer vehicles, then a gentle weathering and done.

Measure twice cut ere….. twice!

Decided to fit an awkward section of track up the gradient, something I should have done at the start but put it off for some reason?  Anyway, fitted some timber track off scene then concrete for the scenic section, somehow managed to cut the hidden bit couple of inches to short!  Idiot! An easy fix but still Annoying!

Also cut a piece of hardboard for the backscene, been playing around with shaping it but not quite happy yet.
