alexl102
Hi,I want to buy Hornby (or maybe DJ Models) example of a Hunslet Austerity/J94 0-6-0ST. However, I'd specifically like to buy a model that is of a locomotive which was actually built in Leeds - by the Hunslet Engine company or Hudswell Clarke - as I'm aiming to focus my collection a little on this area over the next few years. Ideally I'd want one in an industrial livery but BR black would also be an option - does anyone know how I can find out where any given J94/Austerity was built? And does anyone know if the Cadley Hill No.1 that Hornby produce was a Leeds-built loco? From what I've been able to establish on google, I think it was but I can't find a pic in which i can read the builder's plate so can't be 100% sure. Sir Hadyn
Cadley Hill No.1 is Hunslet 3851 of 1962 so definitely Leeds built. I had her in my care at Snibston from 1999-2001 There are other publications around that will list the Leeds built Austerities, whether Hunslet or Hudswell Clarke. Steamport Southport
Unfortunately it's one which the Wikipedia page is poor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunslet_Austerity_0-6-0ST There are quite a few preserved examples here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_preserved_Hunslet_Austerity_0-6-0ST_locomotives But I'll have a search and look for the work numbers of the Leeds built ones. Which was most of them really. Jason
Steamport Southport
This is much better from the Industrial Railway Society. https://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/23/18in_Hunslets.htm Jason
Gordon A
Definitely down to research. This list will give you the builders. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_preserved_Hunslet_Austerity_0-6-0ST_locomotives The livery needs a bit more digging as preserved examples may be in a livery that they did not carry or is fictitious. Surely it doesn't matter if Hornby or DJM produce a loco with the right number on, change the number and obtain a new set of etched builders plates from Narrow Planet? RMweb Gold papagolfjuliet Posted January 3, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2018 The forthcoming DJM 'Antwerp' is a model of a Hunslet example.
Les1952
If you can find one secondhand Hornby's red "Harry" was built by Hudswell Clarke. However Hunslet supplied boilers to other manufacturers so even a Stafford-built Bagnall loco could have a Hunslet boiler. Bits tended to be pooled, and once in service parts migrated from one loco to another at repair. All the best Les
