RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 23, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2021 Thanks very much.. and yes lets see a bit of "normality" in 2022. Baz
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 23, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2021 My OO Works 2F has never run well on DCC so wanting a decoder for my latest 1P I went to what is my local model shop at Settle DCC Concepts. As a Christmas present to myself I got a 3-pack of their Zen V12 small decoders and 3 plug-in large stay alives. After fitting them I was disappointed that the stay alives didn't appear to work until I read in the CV list that the time can be adjusted via CV65, the default is 0 and max is 6 which equals 3 secs of power. This has transformed the 2F's running. No connection with DCC Concepts just a happy customer. 13
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 31, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2021 Latest arrival to the railway room is what was advertised as an LMS 3F. The photo didn't look right to me. On delivery I'm sure it's a Johnson 5'3" 2F with Deeley modifications. It's a Keyser product which I think was L16 in their kit range. Happy to be put right. It runs okay on DC but needs lubrication and some other work before it can be put on the layout.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted February 1, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2022 The Johnson 2F has undergone a major rebuild since the last post. It was glued together with something like Evostik. The tender was anything but square, also the motor gave up when running on rollers. The loco went into paint stripper (brake fluid) and mostly fell apart. Once all was clean, the kit was remade by soldering the parts together. High Level Kits motor and Road Runner gearbox were fitted together with DCC Concepts Zen decoder and stay-alive which nicely fitted into the boiler/smokebox. Brakes, pull rods, sand boxes and pipes were also added to the model. Here is the shed's 2F line-up. 3048 was a Buxton Midland shed (20) loco that was transferred to the Buxton ex-LNWR shed when the former closed in 1935.

MrWolf
You've made a very nice job of rescuing that relic. It's probably the best way of getting an obscure prototype onto your layout without breaking the bank. I keep looking out for older GWR 0-6-0 tender engines to renovate, not won an auction yet!

RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted February 1, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2022 The Kirtley DF goods has been re-issued by Nu-Cast for £100. It can be obtained from them direct or from Branchlines. It might well have been me who had the one on ebay as I got one a couple of weeks ago for just over £30. One has just finished as well although it was a bit pricey at £82. I nearly went for that 2F myself but I'm not sure about the K's 2F it seems to be a generic loco and not of a definite class. Regards Lez.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted February 1, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2022 @Barry O PM sent. @lezz01 No it wasn't you Lez, this went for 3 figures although it did have all needed to complete it. Thanks for the heads-up on the Nu-Cast kit .
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted March 13, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 13, 2022 I have been trying to work out a typical 1930s timetable when the LMS introduced the Millers Dale motor train working (the Midland had one in their time but I don't know the gap between the ending their service and the LMS starting.) The early morning was particularly busy with 4 trains departing before any arrivals. The photo shows the line-up at the start of the day. 0615 local to Matlock hauled by a 2P tank. It will return at 0802 from the county town. 0630 local to Chinley hauled by a 1P tank in the main platform 2. 0708 the 3P in platform 3 will take its train to Manchester (Central). 0752 Warming its two coach set in the carriage siding is a 1P which will shunt into platform 2 before its departure to Millers Dale at 0752.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted March 17, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) In between layout and stock maintenance with the weather warming up I got a coat of paint on the Kirtley goods. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted March 18, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 18, 2022 The Kirtley Class 1 has now received its insignia. Its power class doesn't show up too well but there's a "brass" 1 and a gold counter-shaded black F. I just need to tone down the rods and paint the flying crank bosses and buffer beams.

I was tempted to go for the pre-1928 livery but thought by my flexible time period it would have received the 1928 treatment before being scrapped a short time later. 2519 succumbed about 1932.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted March 19, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2022 (edited) Just about finished with the Kirtley goods, just coal and crew to add and perhaps dulling down the con rods. There's a photo in one of my Buxton books of 2519 pulling empty coal wagons up from the lower yard and here is my take but from the other side. Five wagons was about the maximum the head-shunt would hold. It must have been a nightmare getting loaded wagon into the yard and the empty ones out and as far as I can work out needed 2 engines if not 3. Yes, there is coach on the platform! It's awaiting a Dingham/Flip'em coupling. And this is similar to the shot in the book "Railways Around Buxton." RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted March 31, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 31, 2022 With most photos disappearing following RM Web's transfer to a new server provider I thought I'd better take some more as I never kept the ones I posted 😢. While clearing out one of my railway stock cupboards I came across the footbridge from my old loft layout. One set of steps needs changing round but it saves the passengers a long walk to the bay end. A reminder of the station. Kit-built 1P with the branch motor train. The recently built Kirtley double-framed 1F. 22
RMweb Gold Popular Post Rowsley17D Posted April 1, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 1, 2022 Searching some files I managed to find a few more of the layout. Various shots of the shed area. I see I took these before making the coal offices and shear legs

Mark90
What a shame that all the photos that you posted previously have been lost. But, I suppose it is an excuse to take some more! The ones you've posted above remind me why I come back to this thread so often. 1
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 2, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 2, 2022 Thanks @Dragonboy and @Mark90. The problem I now have with photos is that at this time of year I am taking them against the spring and summer light. Even with the blind lowered photos are poor so I have to wait until later and later in the evening to get decent shots.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 2, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 2, 2022 A shot of the shear legs now in position. Must get those tenders coaled. And the coal offices. Must do something about the floating coal staithes. It's only when you take photos do you notice things like this.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 22, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22, 2022 A motor fitted "Stanier" 2P is ready for the off with the morning sun lightening its face, while its ancestor 1P, still with round top firebox, awaits its next turn of duty. The 2P has a CDC Designs' printed body on a Hornby M7 chassis to which additional brake-gear has been added
