RMweb Gold JustinDean Posted July 9, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2020 Are you going to model any of the structures from Steeplehouse Al? The bridge over Cromford Rd and retaining wall that runs off it could be a nice addition. I live 10 minutes down the road if you need photos of anything....once I’ve completed my mission to photograph the bridge at Friden for Geraint! jay
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2020 Thanks very much for the offer Jay, but the bridge and road layout doesn't match reality, as the road runs under what would have been the steeplehouse branch, instead of the main road. However I will try and make it look similar, there will be a stretch of retaining wall on the right of the the road here: Cheers, Al.

Amongst my collection of C&HPR photos there’s definitely a few that would make great cameo models or modules. You could really keep going with this theme for some time. 2 1
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 10, 2020 Those rats have eaten a great chunk out of the side of the layout, so the only thing I can do is put a quarry in there... Al. 15
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted July 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 10, 2020 I reckon at your rate of progress, adding boards as you go along, you should have connected through to Bakewell by the time you retire! Mike. 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted July 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 11, 2020 This evening I continued with the quarry, making a start on the rock face using ready-mix filler. This will be painted eventually to represent millstone grit. Most of the afternoon was taken up with a bit of Parkside bothering, and here's the result so far: I need to tone down the brake levers and other bits with a bit more weatherage. Thanks for looking, Al. 14
Andrew P
The Quarry's coming on well Al, will you be putting a step ridge in anywhere, i.e. a horizontal ledge as is sometimes seen, and where bits of grass would grow? Mine was only painted on the backscene of Kingsmill Yard. Edited July 12, 2020 by Andrew P

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 12, 2020 Here's the Parkside kit of the 7-plank wagon from yesterday: and here's a Dapol 7-plank wagon, painted and weathered the same: The weathering is based on this photograph by John Evans: Copyright John Evans Used with permission In other news, the quarry face has had some sculpting: It's beginning to look suitably craggy... sb67
Those wagons look great Al. I like the comparison photo too. What colours did you use? On the unpainted wood I wouldn't know where to start.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 12, 2020 Hi Steve, On the inside I used our old friend Humbrol 237 Desert Tan aerosol for the bare wood. Then I used Humbrol weathering powders, Dark Earth and Smoke, to tone it down and dirty it. On the outside. a base coat of Humbrol 164 Dark Sea Grey was applied from an aerosol. Some individual planks were picked out in Humbrol 64 Light Grey and Humbrol 237 Desert Tan and then I used bit of White and then Dark Earth weathering powders to tone it all down. The metalwork was painted in Humbrol 113 Rust, and a bit of Humbrol 62 Leather was used for the more orange rust. Then the same Dark Earth weathering powder was applied to darken it in places. RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted July 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 12, 2020 Here's another one in detail. So the basic spray painting is done: Next is the metalwork, painted in Humbrol 113, and for this wagon White weathering powder is used on the body timbers: Then I use Humbrol Rust weathering powder on the W irons and brake gear, and on the iron endplates of the body: Next the Dark Earth weathering powder is applied to darken everything down: And here it is with the others: Thanks for looking, Al. 20 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2020 A quick update on Steeplehouse. All the basic landscape structure is now in place, and I can start with a bit of papier-mache to finish it off and tidy it up, before we start the grassage. RMweb Premium AdeMoore Posted July 16, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2020 Nice work Al, not seen cork used before as a landform flows rather well, what lies beneath to support it? enjoying the updates. Cheers Ade
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 16, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 16, 2020 6 hours ago, AdeMoore said: what lies beneath to support it? Thanks very much Ade. The answer is, nothing much! The cork is glued to the trackbed, and the edges of the baseboard, but other than that is allowed to go where it wants - which contributes to the nice smooth flow of the landscape - and also means the baseboard is very light. By the time I've added the papier-mache over the top, it will be more than robust enough to lean on. Cheers, Al. 11 3
RMweb Premium AdeMoore Posted July 16, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2020 Ah there you go how clever, one to store in future ideas drawer! Interesting to see the development from here of that. Cheers Ade

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted July 17, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2020 When you run out of cork for your land-forming, vinyl grass matting does much the same thing which with a heat gun can be formed into land forms. It's how I did the embankment from the station level to the shed level on my layout. 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2020 I've made a start applying layers of newspaper and PVA to the cork base, to stiffen it and prepare for static grassage. Al.

It does seem a great shame to devote such effort and skill to producing such superb effects on a wagon that is as fundamentally wrong, in dimensions and details, as the Dapol wagon. Those Parkside RCH mineral wagons are in my experience some of the very best injection moulded plastic wagon kits around.
