Hi,

I'm getting round to my Toad which has been on the go for ages. It's not easy to check the fit of the 6 body parts, hampered as I am with just the two hands! The stepped corners can be positioned with the sides slightly outside the ends, or slightly behind, if that makes sense. Can you remember which you did?

Having said that, the more I think about it I'm tempted to just file them to a sharp edge for a neat fit, build it off the floor then make the floor fit inside afterwards.

The bit which puts me off these appearance wise is the whiskers which should meet in the middle. There are transfers available but removing the printed ones is risky.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used the ones on the 122 which re like this to avoid the two character head code which they carried.

I also think but I am not certain that the 121 chassis is the same as the 122 whereas they should be different as one was built by Gloucester and should be the same as the 119 units and the other by Pressed Steel. From observation the two were not the same. I suspect Heljan will do the same on their versions.

In my 'spotting days, all DMUs were called Bugs, and we paid no attention to them! It looks like a Bug to me, and I particularly like the correct Destination in the centre window box. 👍👍

Interesting the different names they attracted. We knew them as bog carts

Altering my new Dapol 121 to how I remember them born out by photos in various DMU albums. The head rests and seat dividers were a light tanned leatherette.

The painting was done using Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan XF-78.

On the layout body not screwed down and chassis weathering started not finished

I'm not so sure about Paul R's comment about different chassis as both classes had Two BUT (AEC) engines although some 121 had two leyland engines, both types six cylinder horizontal engines rated 150hp.

And none of the photos I have bar a couple of ex works photos show a clear image of the chassis's. They either in shadow or covered in grime and each side had a different arranement of gubbins.

back to the model passenegers have ben ordered from Modelu which will hopefully arrive by the weekend and to fill the gap i am building a second grampus for the ballast train. No photos as yet.

I was intruiged so I've had a skim through various chats about the differences between the two classes but haven't found any mention of chassis differences.

Either way there's a 50% chance its the right one which will do me!

According to Brian Goulding's Pictorial Record of BR DMU's published by Cheona, the 122 Gloucester units were effectively a Class 116 DMBS with a cab at both ends whereas the 121 Pressed Steel Units were 117 DMBS with two cabs. On the other hand the Gloucester 128 Parcels units seem to be the same as the 116 and the 122 which one might expect.

So far though the drawings are not conclusive as the book as the A side of one unit and the B side of the other!!!

I think photo evidence is necessary but we are perhaps straying a bit off topic. Sorry Alan!!!!!

As my final word on the chassis's  my source "British Rail DMUs  and Diesel Railcars (origins and first generation stock)" by Brian Morrison Points out that both 117 and 119 were built to  a standard Derby design the main differnce being the different interpretation of the Destination panel and train number positioning. It would stand to reason that the 121 and 122 were built also to that standard and as they have the same engines, to me the likelyhood would be they would have had a similar chassis.

Enough lets get on with some modelling

Passengers have arrived and been primed

And work has progressed on the Grampus

Mojo must be returning.

Do I put the paper back in the bald fellows hands or is he descibibg the size of the Severn Salmon that got away to a fellow passenger.

He could be playing air piano (or, if you're posh, a Theremin).

Hi,

Stupid question - because it looks pretty clear that you have painted two - but you plan to have a driver both ends?

Its something I've thought about when I put people in my 122 - a driver both ends seems better than none to me.

Regards,

James
