Progress on the Bedford has been slow due to the best part of a couple of weeks on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.

So far chassis has been put together and flat bed made up and wheels painted.

The bits were then placed on each other, not glued to seehaow it is coming on.

Still no yet decided if it's an addition to Frank Drakes fleet of assorted vehicles or is owned by a rival.

Nice one Alan,,,, a Bedford RL,,, how the memory's come flooding back.

I took my RAF Germany driving test in one of those a long time ago.

Although the RAF one's were all 4 wheel drive.

A strange driving position,,, where your bum felt as though it was lower than your feet,,, and the gear lever came at you from behind your shoulder,,,, not to mention the fumes from the petrol engine just 2" from your knee cap.

But in all fairness there was full air-conditioning to get rid of the fume's,,, you could wind the front screen open to let a bit of fresh air in.

As ever,,, Happy Day's!!!

C U Soon

More work on the Bedford. The cab and the smaller bits primed and the flatbed very slightly modified with Everggreen strip and channel and then painted.

The main bits sre still not gued together and there is sometouching up to do before finishing and weathering.

It interesting there's a thread on here somewhere about the extent to which we airbrush history with our modelling. This is a very nice looking model and would be in keeping so I was extremely tempted, until it occurred to me I just find it staggeringly ugly :)

After much thought thanks to a PM from Phil (34006) plus comments and luckily a drawing on Western Thunder about the shortness of the overhang of the flatbed yesterday I tok the plunge and rebuilt ita scale 1ft 6ins. longer I must admit it looks much better. It also meant that the chassis was extended.

Flatbed primed a few minutes ago and the chassis extension painted.

I've had the same problems with the real thing and sometimes looking at preserved examples is no help. The chassis extension behind the spring hangers was often part of the original vehicle specifications. Many old lorries have survived which were originally box vans and ended their days as sheds, or had been heavily modified for recovery or fairground duties. The new owners have often scrapped the original body on the grounds of costs or storage space and the frame extension is often an unsuitable shape or length for a flatbed conversion. Rather than having the extension remade, many restorers have truncated the bed just behind the rear wheels, losing up to five feet of flatbed.

It's a bit of a minefield and totally understandable when what you are provided with is the absolute basic chassis.

As Hal said, it's difficult to comment when you have made such a good job of the first body, but at least you can take a little comfort in the fact that nothing was finished and permanently fixed. It's looking much better now though.

Now that does look the part.

To anyone else who's "modifying" vehicles, one of my ex-Gaffers welded 2 units together to make a 4 wheeler,it had a 180 hp motor when other 4 wheelers were puttering about with 120s.It would only do about 52mph,but would go up the side of a mountain.

Nice one Alan.

It's obvious from your pictures that you got the proportions bang on without my help! The driving position is quite odd, (but strangely comfortable) that cab is tiny compared with modern lorries, it's like sitting inside a post box.
