vac_basher
Thanks. When the evenings start closing in again I'll probably take it out and get some more work done on it. There's plenty of room for improvement. And I never did finish sticking the rocks on....
cromptonnut
Good to see you're still persevering after almost giving up! Now hurry up and get those rocks glued on, and put the fiddle yards on - we want videos next!
vac_basher
As I said I hope to get some more work done on Smugglers Lane when the evenings start closing in.... In the meanwhile I've been doing a few locos (a class 33, a class 37, and another Vac ) which are now almost ready - pics soon! The only other thing I've done to the layout is that I've added some signs to the tunnel mouth. I printed them myself. I'm quite pleased with the results. vac_basher
Well, I had said Smugglers Lane would make a return when the evenings closed in. So here we are, after a couple of months Smugglers Lane has emerged from the cupboard.... As you can see from the (very poor quality) pics below I've added a few details this evening. Both as a memo for myself and perhaps of interest to my followers, let's see what we have left to do then: (not in any particular order) * finish adding rocks to rockery. * add sleepers to the rockery. * put a bit of folliage between the rocks. * more bushes? * close tunnel mouth. * paint rails, as allot of the paint has come off? * source suitable stonework for walkway. * secure backscences/cliffs. * put some ballast around the signal base. * add S&T concrete troughing. * add speed restriction sign (already sourced and built, just needs painting). * repair/disguise the wall where I damaged it near the "keep clear" sign (see pic) * add more people and some dogs. * possibly add a boat of some description. * have a go at potentially ruining it all - a.k.a. weathering * paint the tops of the walls brown (I'd done them in matt black, but it just doesn't look right) * add a car to the slipway (does anybody do Land Rovers?) * get my new loco's out when all the above is done. Again, appologies for the pics which aren't up to my usual standards.
vac_basher
I've taken the Keep Clear signs off as I felt they didn't suit the era of the diorama. Health & Safety were more tolerant of things back in the 1980s I've added the S&T troughing and weathered the bridge. I'm not too sure about the troughing, but I'm quite happy with the outcome of the bridge. It doesn't look so plasticy anymore. Thanks for suggesting that CromptonNut B) Here are some pics of my newest locomotives. I think the pics are ok, but not great. I didn't take these in natural light and after seeing them on the computer I realized the manual focus was a bit out. I'll try and get some better ones next time the sun's shinning. I'm really pleased with the Bachmann Warship. Great value for money! I find it remarkable the tooling they use for this is decades old. Years ago I used to have some Lima Warships and they were quite nice, but the old Mainline one must have been quite special in it's time (real handrails; good quality moulded detail; ect.) The Heljan Cromptons were cheap too. They're very nice. I didn't have a 33/1 before, but now I've got one I can see the roof issue on the 33/0 when I put them side by side - that's a shame because the 33/0 looked right to me before. Warship hammers along the sea wall towards Dawlish.... Not too sure if I prefer this pic or the previous one. A Warship crosses Smugglers Bridge (note bridge weathering) Photo taken from the top of Parsons Hill (note S&T troughing) After getting the green light the Warships accelerates towards Parsons' Tunnel. Not a great photo of the locomotive, but I thought the light/smoke was interesting in this pic A pair of light engine Cromptons emerge from Parsons Tunnel (destination Meldon Quarry?). One of the 33's must have a problem with it's power unit, as I've never seen a 33 with so much clag before
RMweb Gold bcnPete Posted September 19, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 19, 2010 I have only just found this thread by chance and having read through it, it's a great piece of work. I admire your determination with the track/ballast in the early stages - I would have thrown in across the room, such is my grown up attitude in these situations But most of all, I love all the different photos, as I enjoyed many a great holiday with my parents in Teignmouth and Dawlish and your thread evokes terrific memories of walking along the wall and/or dashing out of the sea during the early eighties. Thank you...can you post some more Pete
vac_basher
can you post some more Thanks Pete. I'm glad you like it For the 1980s I'll need to get my Class 50s out for you. In the meantime here are a few more of the Warship and a Class 33. I think these ones might be a bit better than the ones I posted yesterday because I took these in natural light.... eastwestdivide
3 feet of brillance. Do we get to see any steam specials? And any chance of a long shot showing both ends, just to see the whole thing on one go? Though I reckon your pallet on the beach could do with losing a couple of slats. if I found one as good as that lying round, I'd scavenge it for the compost heap! vac_basher
Do we get to see any steam specials? In due course. My steam fleet isn't very large at the moment, but I have something planned.... Though I reckon your pallet on the beach could do with losing a couple of slats. It's a metal one, so it would be very difficult to remove the slats. I think I might have some plastic ones somewhere....

Trainsrgr8
Great little diorama The colour picture of the warship above is just stunning! Great work Danny
vac_basher
As you can see from today's pics, I've finished adding the rocks. I've also weathered some of the lower rocks to represent seaweed. I've added the oil stain (gloss black over matt black) near the signal. I think that's just about it for now. If anybody has any more suggestions I'd love to hear them.... While EastWestDevide and I were waiting to photograph the steam powered railtour this Class 47 came past.... Here it is! Steam on the seawall! This model's actually a few years old. It's an old Replica Railways B1. It was done as limited edition by Steam World magazine some 20 years ago or so. They only did 300 of them, but I've never seen another for sale, so it must be quite rare. 61264 crosses Smugglers Bridge. A pair of Cromptons on departmental duties. 47846 Thor waits for the green light.... ....and returns south from London later the same evening. And last one for today is a pic showing the oil stain near the signal and the S&T troughing. Class 50s next time.... B)
eastwestdivide
If anybody has any more suggestions I'd love to hear them.... 1. Are those light-coloured corners in the tunnel mouth intentional, or an artefact on the photo, or light from the other end, or do they need touching up? 2. Seabirds? depending on the type of smoke you're using, you might leave no tern unstoned. 3. Background sound of crashing waves and seagulls? I can smell almost the smoke and seaweed. Excellent stuff. vac_basher
I can smell almost the smoke and seaweed. and fish & chips Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see what I can do.... P.S.: Is that you next to the Class 45/46 in your pic?
eastwestdivide
P.S.: Is that you next to the Class 45/46 in your pic? In my "avatar" pic - no, some anonymous kid, at Derby I think. Just seemed funny at the time. Wonder if he's on the forum now. Think the chips would be cold by the time you got there from Teignmouth. Can't think of anything else to complete the diorama, other than someone messing about in a dinghy maybe? 1988.
vac_basher
Interesting pic. Just out of curiosity, do you know which Class 50 it was? It's given me a couple of ideas: 1) I need a cabinet near the signal. 2) I need to weather the waterline on the bridge pillars and the wall on the left. As for the dinghy, I'd seen a really nice one by Noch, but I didn't buy it because I have no water....
eastwestdivide
Interesting pic. Just out of curiosity, do you know which Class 50 it was? No notes (or buried somewhere in a cardboard box), but blowing up the original scan (below), the "50" is a 47, the number's too blurred to read, but it looks like 474xx, and maybe tentatively round big numbers for the last two digits like 3 8 9 or 0. Given it was 1988, that might be enough of a clue. On the other hand, looking at your forum name, are you going to care?! ttfn
vac_basher
How embarrassing . I was convinced it was a 50 but there's no doubt about it: it's a 47/4 The man on the rocks is interesting too. I wonder what he was doing.... It looks like he's been cut of by the water. Guest jim s-w
I may have missed this but how do you do your smoke? Cheers Jim
vac_basher
Cigar smoke, Jim. But due to obvious reasons (ie. smoking's bad for you) I'm looking into new methods.
Melly
Cracking work Vac basher But.... hate to be the bearer of bad news but when I saw the picture of the Heljan 47 it looks just like mine did when it went all banana with the bent chasis. I'd check yours quick and take the body off very carefully. Some more Heljan 47's are due soon so you should be able to get a replacement chasis from Howes Kidlington later this year. Sorry!! Your loco...... Mine........... And even after I had the chasis replaced - the effect on the bodyshell was still evident.... Regards Melly Edit: the thread on the old forum that may be of use is here: My link
vac_basher
Hi Melly, In my photo I'd noticed too that my 47 was sagging a bit. I thought it was odd, but I didn't really give it second thoughts - even though I'm well awear of the problem some of these models had. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll get in touch with Howes. I guess in the meantime the best thing to do would be to remove the body from the chassis, as you suggested. So I've got a dud duff!
DerekEm8
V-B Going back to your original post about running anything from steam to date. How are these pics. vac_basher
Great pics! Thanks for that. I could almost recreate that actually. I have 50008, I have a blue Warship, and I have a maroon Western ordered....
