RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted August 13, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 13, 2019 According to Wikipedia (citing Rail) the first units withdrawn are 142005, 016, 021-022, 025, 046 and 066 (25 being stopped last week). 1

Thank you for posting. Interesting to see that only some of the ten kindly listed by another member last week for withdrawal this week on Monday, have so far been withdrawn. So that's seven now officially withdrawn. Also, a Northern social media post today suggests that 15 of the new units are now in service, an addition of five since last week, which should cover some of the pacers withdrawn. It will be interesting to see though if Northern can manage without re-introducing some of the withdrawn pacers, as I have read by others that they may struggle to manage. I suppose we will have to wait and see.

eastwestdivide
BBC and others reporting that South Yorkshire will be the Pacers' last stand in Northern-land, running into 2020 instead of all gone by the end of 2019: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-49323007 Presumably they can concentrate the last few on some self-contained diagrams like Sheffield-Adwick, Sheffield-Gainsborough, Sheffield-Huddersfield? Just a wild guess. Living locally, I might get the chance to ride or photograph the very last one! 2 2 1
Owd Bob
I was talking to a Pacer Driver the other day who said the North West based ones should be withdrawn by the end of December/early January. He said they will be kept stored at Heaton pending ideas for their possible further use. Overall he had'nt got a bad word to say about them and that they had lasted longer than they should have and so had more than done the job they were built for. That is the class 144’s - 20 sets - which are down to run until May 2020 if the remaining Sprinters get all the PRM work completed by then. That’s the revised plan by Northern. All 142’s are to be withdrawn by the end of December. But one question. Has Heaton got enough siding space to store all those 142’s? Will some have to be stored elsewhere? RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2019 Oh dear. 142046 has had to be placed back into service today owing to a chronic shortage of units on Northern...... Rob. 1 1

Rob. Thanks for posting. Coincidence that I thought that this would happen and I posted a comment regarding this just last night. Not really looking good at the moment regarding pacer withdrawals. Only 7 out of 10 originally planned for withdrawal on Monday this week have been removed from traffic and this is now to six withdrawals if 142046 is now back in service. I mean it's good that we have seen some withdrawals at last but not so good that the withdrawal process doesn't seem to be keeping up with Northern's original plans. RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted August 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 14, 2019 (edited) I suspect it will be a fluid situation to start with. Essentially these units are just being 'switched off', meaning they are liable to be returned to service at very short notice...either to cater for a major failure of a class-mate, leading to its withdrawal, or a more general shortage of stock. The fact the list of units slated for withdrawal on Monday is not exactly the same as the actual units withdrawn, attests to this. I will be interested to see how long 142046's stay of execution will be. Edited August 14, 2019 by Claude_Dreyfus 1
RMweb Premium iands Posted August 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 14, 2019 So with regard to the reinstatement to traffic of 142046, would it be more accurate to state, for the time being at least, that the status of the Pacers (as listed previously above) are in fact "Stored serviceable" rather than "Withdrawn"? Just curious on the definitions.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2019 That is most probably the situation. It’s reported by several people that there are more units, than is usually the case, out of use for repairs today. So keeping those Pacers available for cover makes sense, but it’s a very sad situation to be in. Things do need sorting out as quickly as possible. It will soon be January. RMweb Gold 4630 Posted August 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2019 Apparently Northern has reached agreement with the DfT for "its class 144s to remain in service until all of the new CAF units and those cascaded from other operators are carrying passengers. The Pacers are now expected to be progressively withdrawn between January and May 2020." Detail reported here. You may need to scroll down a bit. 1
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2019 That’s right about the 144’s. They are to be used on services to and from Sheffield, so over here, in the East Riding, we should see the last of the Pacers by late December. Currently, some 142’s as well as 144’s are running up to Scarborough from Hull and Sheffield on Sundays. Regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted August 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2019 The bit that was new to me was that I'd not seen a finish month in 2020 mentioned before. Of course, whether or not that month holds in the light of any intervening events is an entirely different matter. The occasional Northern 142 is turning up on the hourly Huddersfield-Castleford service, interspersed with class 153s. On 15th August 142052 has just departed from Mirfield with 2O78, 15.03 Huddersfield to Castleford.

Owd Bob
I spent half an hour at Hindley yesterday and saw at least eight 142 units passing, either two units coupled together or coupled with 150's, more than i'd normally see at Crow Nest junc' in 30.mins'. Numbers inc' 003, 037, 043, 061, 088.
Owd Bob
The other 142's from yesterday, 003 & 088, there were three unknown numbers, i'm not quick enough to cross the bridge and get the ones that are tucked at the rear. This forum won't let me post more than 3 three pics' at once, so sorry for splitting them up today. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 16, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2019 (edited) I’ve just found this photo’ of 142093, taken January, 26th, 2018, with it stood in Hull Paragon, at platform 6. Next working to York. I recall little of that day except the trains at Paragon station... Best regards, Rob. P.S. It looks like there may be more 195’s and 331’s into service in early September, on Monday the 8th, so there could be another small number of Pacers withdrawn too.
