I've made up a second 275mm track panel using half the left-over PermaWay plain chairs and Peco code 124 rail.

I was intending to use C&L timber sleepers for this one:

DSC02826.JPG.d95f399fa2eb1c38efca92ed340c058c.JPG

The C&L sleepers come attached to a carrier strip along the bottom. They are fully laser cut between the sleepers, but firmly attached to the bottom strip. I thought maybe they'd just snap off, which they kind of did but not cleanly:

DSC02827.JPG.833c9838e4ab4d5dcb9772c7626292dd.JPG

as you can see from the partial remains of some of the sleepers still attached to the bottom strip. So I had to cut quite a bit more of the way through using a razor saw before the others would snap off cleaner.

This is a bit tedious, and I prefer the Intentio sleepers which are laser cut on all sides and come loose in a bag ready to use.

Having got my 17 C&L sleepers ready I then realised that I'd modified my template to cater for the scale 9' Intentio sleepers, so that's what I used in the end.

I'm trying out all the readily available versions of sleepers, chairs and rail to find which combination I prefer.

I'm still waiting for some C&L rail to be delivered... I think that's the only alternative I haven't tried yet.

Next step is to wire up the LEDs to the connector board then make up the back panel with connections to the rest of the (yet to be built) layout.

A little bird has dropped a hint that Santa will be bringing something to help with making up the back panel :).

A little progress on the back panel. Santa did indeed deliver, so I've been able to drill the holes in the aluminium angle to hold the interface connectors:

All I need to do now is wire them up internally and build a layout to connect them to 🙂

Just catching up your thread, look forward to seeing the track building develop. Did you change your mind on the 2nd track plan? I notice the control panel appears to be the first track plan you posted, not the revised one.

Well spotted! After playing around with the track plan in Anyrail and running through movements in my imagination I concluded that the second plan was getting a little cluttered and some of the radii a little tight. Avoiding turnouts over baseboard joints was also an issue. Overall I was happier with the original plan. Time will tell I guess.

I liked the extra operational flexibility it appeared to add, but with the practical considerations you have, I can see why you stuck with plan 1. Either way, I look forward to see this grow.

Despite the lack of updates I am still making some very slow progress on the layout.
I have an Intentio coal stage that needs putting together as this will largely determine the positions of everything else on the track plan.
However, on opening the box I found the prospect a little daunting as I've never previously built anything like it before.
So I thought I'd start with something a little bit more straightforward - an Intentio weighbridge office.
These kits are really well designed and go together well.
It also has internal detail, so I went a little bit to town on it!

Modelu gutters & holderbats (I didn't think the ones supplied in the kit did the rest of the kit justice), downpipes, desk & chair

Of course, hardly any of this will ever be noticed once it's in place on the layout...

Next up, I thought I needed a bit more practice before tackling the coal stage so opted for a Timber Tracks sand house.

Compared to the Intentio weighbridge office this is a relatively basic kit. No interlocking corner finger bricks, no internal detail, no base, etc.

I only went to the outskirts of town on this one, adding: a base; door frames; door knobs; door steps; bargeboards; Modelu gutters & holderbats; downpipe; drain cover; concrete lintels & ledges and sand hole liners.

I think it came out ok:

The chimney needs to somehow attach to the sand house.

As the chimney is tapered all the way down I thought I'd make a small square base for it with a short joining section to the building.

The chimney is free standing and the connecting archway can attach to any of three faces of the base.

I'm not sure which location is best to attach it to the sand house:

PS: the engineering blue bricks look far less blue than they appear to be in the photos.

I think I need to make a start on the coal stage now...

Spot on!

I bought it quite a while ago so not sure if it’s still available.

Intentio models are in my opinion the best available. I've comissioned them to build me a GWR loan act shed an there also going to sort me the coaling stages used at laira in Plymouth. Very good quality kits. The Slough coaling stage looks very nice I'm tempted to get one in 4mm at some point.

The model is now living with me waiting to be used on a new shed-based layout.

That is one of my favourite kits but it takes so long to cut out. I think about 6/7 hours on the laser for the 7mm version.

I’ve been persuaded to do another batch in 7mm and also a very limited number in 4mm.  I’ll probably see how I can simplify the design so to speed up laser time.

In the meantime, i shall look forward to the updates here.

That’s a great idea. I’ll have to borrow that and produce as an optional extra.

I’m afraid it’s had to take a back seat due to other (non modelling) priorities. 😕

There’s no progress worth reporting really as yet, but I have done a dry run with all the parts which has been useful in sorting out what goes where. Hopefully I’ll be able to make a start fairly soon.

I'm hopefully going to get one of these coaling stages in 4mm if intentio will do it.

If my 7mm version is anything to go by, you won’t be disappointed.

I've got to get Phill to produce it in 4mm I would think it's would be a great little seller very much lacking good 4mm coaling stages
