Apologies for the lack of updates - I've been away on an extended trip down under. Well, it's too far (and too expensive) to go for just a week or two...

Trouble is I was away for so long I'd completely forgotten what my plan was for putting the coal stage together. I think I've worked it out now, so here's a bit of an update.

Putting the water tank together, with lights in place for the coal floor below:

End and side panels added:

Roof supports added:

The finished tank:

Might need a little bit more attention to glue down the edges of the corrugated roof and dirty it up a bit more, but otherwise I'm happy with it.

Have I mentioned what a great kit this is?

Next up, putting the rear wall together with my add-ons (internal walls and roof beams):

Left hand side not glued yet, just making sure it will all go together as planned.

Edit: PS: the main beam is part of the kit.

On to the side walls:

Left hand side external walls from the kit (note the alignment holes):

Right hand side external walls:

My additional left & right internal walls:

DSC05003.JPG.7987d0f7c7c9583f277d06ba7438cf31.JPG

All put together - I used some 1mm bootlace ferrules for alignment, which are a perfect fit in the holes provided for the purpose (my toothpicks didn't quite fit):

Now to start the part of the build that I've been putting off for fear of painting myself into a corner - putting the sides together.

This is also the best bit - where it all starts to look (hopefully) like a coal stage.

There are probably several ways that this could be achieved satisfactorily, but I'm sure there are many more ways to get it wrong and end up with parts that were then difficult to fit, because the interlocking of the various tabs and the corner bricks (while brilliant and precise) is quite tight.

I started by fitting the left wall to the middle floor, then adding the front wall, then the back wall, using the ground floor to keep everything square.

DSC05121.JPG.0e72fb70aae774d7d4096037c3b97fc9.JPG

At this point I noticed that I'd already boobed - the hole I'd drilled to take the wire from the LEDs in the water tank down to the base is obscured by my internal front wall. Drat!

Fortunately this was just a dry run, no glue, so it's easy to rectify (this time).

New slot cut in the middle floor for the interior light wiring and all now glued back together.

I've made a start on building up the walls, adding the layers of buttresses.

Apologies for the radio silence on this thread - I got a little bit distracted.

I was working in the lab late one night ... printing off some simple bits for the next step of the coal stage build when I started thinking about designing the wagon that was the original inspiration for getting the printer in the first place.

Since then virtually all my modelling time has been spent working on this:

I got totally engrossed with this side project, but hopefully the brunt of the work is now done so normal service will resume when the first N6 rolls on its own wheels!

Yes, Slaters nominally do an N13 as mentioned in the other topic, and I have one in my kit stash.

It has a few issues though, as superbly described here: Netherport

Given the issues magmouse found it would probably be easier to print my own!

Sorry if I've missed this in an earlier post, but what glue(s) do you use?

On the other bits I've printed off I've used CA which seems to work fine, but I haven't tried glueing the wagon bits as yet.

Thanks, but I meant on the laser cut stuff.

For very small delicate bits of thin ply I sometimes use CA, which soaks into the ply and gives it a lot more strength.

For areas where a fine bead of glue is needed I use:

I use the fine applicator nozzle to lay down a thin line.

For slightly larger areas where accuracy isn't so important I use:

image.png.a00d589bf34f8112eb995d7c6aca71d0.png

I usually put down a few blobs in the middle of the piece then use a paintbrush to spread it out thinly over the required area (brush washes off with water, providing you don't let it set on the brush).

For larger areas I just use plain old PVA applied thinly with a paintbrush to both surfaces and left for a couple of minutes to become slightly tacky before joining the surfaces together (brush washes off with water).

I have also tried:

image.png.80cf27165b9268d71120d989835bd5ea.png

but found that (as it says on the bottle) it is instant, so you have to get the alignment spot on first time because there is no second chance.

I was scratching my head a bit when you decided to forgo the windows supplied in the kit but those look really good and also very GWR too. The whole build is good and I’m very impressed.

I found a partial set of parts in a box under dust in the workshop and Graham has taken on the task of building and painting it.

On the tank, the laser marks for the rivets can be pressed out with a rivet machine if desired. On the attached picture Graham spent  over two hours while watching Netflix!

I had pondered what to do about the rivets on the tank. I don’t have a rivet machine.
I had intended to get some Archers rivets to try adding those but they shut up shop before I got round to ordering any.

Railtec now do something similar I believe, but the size and spacing would have to be pretty spot on to work.

The embossed laser marks actually show up quite well in real life though they hardly show at all in the photos I posted above. I might try brushing some dark powders over them to try to highlight them a bit more.

There are multiple options of different head diameters and spacings, perhaps even more than what modellers actually need. (I'm not sure how many modellers would distinguish the difference between 1⅛ head diam and 1¼ head diam for example, particularly in 4mm or even 7mm scales). I think the 3d rivet catalog now has over 200 items in it, so it should cover most needs.

https://www.railtec-transfers.com/rivets/

As they're 3d waterslide you just cut off what you need and apply to whatever you're putting it on. That way you get dozens and dozens of perfectly spaced and uniform rivets in a matter of seconds without any hassle.

Having scratched the N6 Coal Wagon itch I thought it high time that the Coal Stage was brought forward off the back burner.

The four walls are now complete (apart from a little more mortar in places), including the interior details:

DSC05784.JPG.765d3179afa8871f9de3802a692e0407.JPG

The rear canopy over the coal wagon road is all ready to be glued on. Here it is just slotted in place for the photos:

DSC05787.JPG.17c8d87221b6e3e313bd6e44de8e2b61.JPG

Next on the list are the outside lights, coal tip platform, staircase, track ramp and then finish off the rear canopy with support columns and downpipes.

Forgot to add, there's also an access platform with ladder and a water level gauge to be added too...

Thank you 🙂.

There’s a couple of things I’d do differently if I was building it again, such as positioning the roof beams so as to hide the slots and tabs of the water tank, but I’m generally super pleased with how it’s turning out.

It would be good to see your build of the 4mm version. Will you be posting it somewhere?

I will take pictures of the building of it I normally post on the GWR modellers page on facebook I may however start a thread on here. I've also received intentio's GWR engine shed recently. Can't recommend it enough. His 7mm version is coming soon in 2 an 4 road versions. Can't wait to see more progress on your stage an your layout

Kind regards Neil

I don't do Facebook so a thread here would be very welcomed.
