How and where she will be moored with HMS Queen Elizabeth using the main jetty, I do not know! KZ the answer appears to lie on this page on the RN website where it says the two carriers will be berthed 'side by side'. I do wonder if that is correct as berthing them alongside each other would put surely out the one furthest from the jetty pretty close to the main channel and that is quite busy. Also looking at an online chart it says that alongside both the Victory Jetty and Princess Royal Jetty is also being dredged to 13.8 metres so I wonder if they will actually be berthed in line ahead instead of abeam - we will no doubt find out in due course. (The chart will enlarge if you have Flash operative on your 'puter) https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-latest-activity/news/2019/october/17/191017-new-jetting-for-hms-prince-of-wales https://www.visitmyharbour.com/harbours/solent/gosport-marinas/chart/F19A60E53A4B2/gosport-marinas-and-commercial-docks I'm not sure when QE returns from the USA apart from the navy saying 'she will be home for Christmas' - she was in New York on Saturday so presume the F35 trials deployment has finished. so I doubt both of them will be in Pompey when I'm there for an OF's Christmas nosh in a couple of weeks from now. 1

RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted November 24, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 24, 2019 (edited) Having looked up at HMS Hermes and seen the stoved in railings on the flight deck after a trip up North Atlantic way. the glib remark that F35 fighters would be fine lashed down and covered up doesn't hold up. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted December 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2019 Saw one of the QEs for the first time today and crikey they are big. Even if you remember the last RN fleet carriers these ships are big. I managed a pic of the for'ard half from inside the dockyard; the best view of the stern half was from the Harbour station but I was tight for time for the train so didn't stop for a pic. It's going to be quite a sight when they two of them are then in a few weeks time after QE gets back from the USA.

It's strange because when I look at the QE class carriers they don't seem that big to me. I suspect too many years doing port operations with container ships that are mostly now 20000+ TEU / 400m long and approaching 200000 gross tons might have affected my perception somewhat!

If you see them from the stern in particular they are much larger than the RN's last fleet carriers in their final years. HMS Ark Royal finished up with a beam at deck level of 52 metres whereas have a beam of 73 metres with almost all of that visible at the stern hence they look a lot bigger seen from that angle (which I think gives them a wider beam than most very large container ships?). Length is also greater, by 35 metres, than HMS Ark Royal in her final state so they don't just look bigger than Ark Royal but are bigger, with a significantly greater displacement of course. Comparison with merchant ships is a very different thing but that has long been the case with many warships. 1 1

peterfgf
Agreed, she is a Type 45 but I haven't managed to find out which one from the normal vessel AIS tracking sites. What interested me though, is the jetty she is alongside and which I don't remember seeing before. After some searching I found out that it is the Upper Harbours Ammunition Facility. HMS Dauntless is also at Portsmouth in an operational state and while HMS Diamond's current location is not reported she is operational and could possibly be in UK waters. 1

Baz Whilst on a tour of one of the T45's several years ago the RN Officer mentioned that when the RN had a great clear out of personnel (sometime after 2010?) there was very little (if any) thought given to what trades they'd get shot of - it was basically a numbers game, apparently. Really bright move, that.
