Popular Post 37114
My wife has been very supportive (as always) and let me leave the layout boxed up on the playroom floor recently which makes it much easier and appealing to work on the layout which is handy as most of the work recently has been scenic work rather than sub projects such as the lorry or rolling stock. As regular readers will know my other hobby involves restoring a 1977 Land Rover to as good as I can possibly get it. This has involved considerable cleaning of rusty parts and consequently most of the wire brushing rubbish and swarf ends up over the workbench. Recently I have been sweeping the swarf into an old ice cream carton as I thought it would make great ground cover for the scrapyard so was keen to try it out. The added benefit of it is it actually smells like scrap! First job was to sieve it. I looked for an old sieve but couldn't find one so waited until Julie went for a run... The larger bits have been set aside while the dust that was left was sprinkled on PVA that was spread over the ground. Some of the bigger bits that went through the sieve will be brushed off when the glue is set. I thought to add to the atmosphere I would get some wagons out. 22
RMweb Gold 5BarVT Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2021 Nothing like the real thing to look realistic! Paul.
Popular Post 37114
I realised it has been a while since I gave an update on the layout and a few bits have come on. I have been getting on with the ground cover and weeds and have been trying to get some of the loose scenic bits like the level crossing gates fixed down. The gates actually open but into the direction of the backscene, where in future a hole will be cut for a second board. Before fixing the gate I needed to make the warning circle which is painted red on the other side (not sure on the technical term). On the siding next to the level crossing gate a sleeper has been glued to the track instead of a buffer beam, some chains will be added. The reason for this approach over a normal buffer beam is because the siding is really tight lengthwise for the 3 Molasses tanks. Also visible is one of 2 telegraph poles that have been added. The Ford Escort has been glued down as well, I bent the front wheels to like it has been steered into the space which I think looks more realistic. The other Telegraph pole has gone near the Redscaff building. I have also added some details near the scrapyard office including the pallet boxes, cutting torch, petrol cans and fire extinguishers. 18

Ruston
It's really starting to look the part now, Rob. Question is; is there much left of the Land Rover now?

Oh yes Dave, just not much that left Solihull in 1977. It is looking smart though;
RMweb Gold Joner Posted January 30, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 30, 2021 I am loving watching this come together. All the little bits and pieces of details Swarf, gas cylinders and trollies etc really making it come together. Great atmosphere. The turned wheels make the car look like it's been driven there not just plonked from the sky above. Used to spend my time on the platforms there in the early 90's. Keep up the great work, Paul

Keep up the great work, Paul Thanks Paul, modifying the Escort wheels was one of the easiest I have done, the axles are quite soft, it is a nice model too. I used to go to BTM in the 90s when I was at secondary school usually skipping games on Wednesday afternoon to watch some trains leave before catching the train to Redland to where my Mum worked. Although Avon Street was long gone, there was still plenty of classic traction interest.
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 30, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 30, 2021 The modelings fab Rob but I have to say that I absolutely love the landie! It's a 1/2 tonner isn't it? I passed my test in one of those although it was green and black and had the steering wheel on the wrong side. Regards Lez.
mullie
The layout looks great. But then so does the landie, my 1977 station wagon didn't look like that even when I sold it over 20 years ago though it ran great after a lot of work. Since then I've got used to cars with working heaters. Mine had a dent in the safari roof from when I pulled into a theatre car park, for a gig and hit the height barrier as I had forgotten how tall it was! Thanks Lez, not sure on the weight designation on it, but it is a standard 'farmer spec" 88 inch series 3, passinga driving teston one must have been an interesting experience??. I used to see loads of them growing up as a kid in rural Somerset so always wanted one. When I bought this one I knew the reg was a North London area platebut when I got the history of the DVLA it turned out it only spent a couple of years in London before migrating to Somerset. At one point it was owned by someone 3 miles from where I lived meaning that I had almost certainly seen it long before I ended up buying it.

Martyn Thanks Martyn, funnily enough I have some height challenges with mine at the minute as I fitted new springs which means the Ifor Williams hard top it has for the rear is too tall for the garage door by 1 cm..... Hoping the springs will settle as the weight goes back on.
37114
Some recent purchases have been diecast vehicles for the scrapyard, a Morris J van and VW Beetle which arrived on Saturday (and thus have yet to be weathered) and a Mini Traveller which has been suitably distressed. The Mini and VW are from Cararama and are much easier to dismantle and modify than the Corgi Vanguard models however on closer inspection the VW does appear to be over scale compared to the other vehicles (something I discovered after the box had been recycled and the removal of parts was undertaken..) so I have positioned it slightly away from the other vehicles. The other beauty of the Cararama vehicles is the doors are separate so can be removed. I put the rest of the vehicles I have worked on in the scrapyard to get a sense of how busy the yard looks. Feels just about right, I need to be careful to make sure it is not too crowded but not too empty. The eagle eyed will notice the crane now has a magnet on it for loading the wagons with non ferrous scrap. Also new is the sign for the scrapyard, based on an actual sign that was fixed on the office on Habgoods scrapyard which was between Avon Street and Barton Road, they are still in business today but in a different yard nearby. 14

Hi, the magnet will only load ferrous materials, basically steel and iron. Unless other metals, such as aluminium, brass, copper etc contain rare earth magnets the elctro-magnet will be useless and a grab would be used to load these materials. Rivercider
It is really looking good Rob, very atmospheric. I don't think anyone has responded, but the red circle on the level crossing gate is known as a target. When the Avon Waste train was running the gates to the depot at Bath Westmorland got knocked down, when they were re-instated the target was left off, making the closed gates less visible on the propelling move.... cheers

It looks like the target went missing from the Barton Road crossing at some point but I have seen a photo of it in place around the time my layout is set.
