On the other hand I've a spare body that has been given a grotty makeover by a previous owner

I have some Nitro Mors paint stripper which I’ve used on a HD A4, bought it for around £25 earlier this year, no tender, managed to get it running relatively easily, but the paint was incredibly tatty.

IMG_0056.jpeg.aed951284f3ee10a6c664355f74d7924.jpeg

Shortly after getting that model, I saw 60007 on the Welsh Marches on test, pretty much decided on the spot which A4 I wanted to paint it as. Need some more decals (numbering, crests, etc), and I don’t mean to pat myself on the back, but it’s looking a lot better than it was when I got it.

(Photo is an old one from when I started the repaint, I’ve finished the lining, still need numbers, nameplates and crests…)IMG_1919.jpeg.c92a17dc87ad8fc5b0cd94ca0e1b172a.jpeg

You can get Nitro Mors around £20 on Amazon, decent stuff for the price, and you get a lot of it if you’re just stripping paint off diecast components, so if you want to revive that CoBo shell then I’d recommend that for removing the old paint.

You can get Nitro Mors

Hi. That's a lovely looking A4 repaint mate. We nipped over to the NYMR for coffee and cake last week. They were running SNG up and down between Grosmont  and the engine shed so I got a few bits of vid and some pics. The colour blue on SNG looks to be very much like on your model.

As for paint stripping. I used to use Nitromors up to about 10 years ago for stripping old Dinky/Corgi etc toy cars but then changed over to using caustic drain cleaner crystals at £2.75 for 500gms.( dissolve in water) Available from our local handy man shop. Sometimes turns up in the pound shop. It'll have the paint off old  Dublo tinplate carriages in no time. It will also strip diecast locos but sometimes leaves a white residue behind. I get round this by giving the loco a wipe with turps or similar a little while before spraying the undercoat.( I use a rattle can etch primer from the car shop). The caustic will also take the paint off plastic models. I've not had any damage to any plastic in the ten years I've been using it. After use the caustic can go down the drain. Like Nitromors, caustic is nasty nasty stuff and PPE should be worn, and safety instructions followed . Always add crystals to water, not water to crystals.

If I get a paint that won't shift I'll resort to old fashioned brown Dettol. It takes a while to work but can be filtered and re used.

Very much enjoying your posts. Please keep 'em coming

 Regards, Rich.

Might give the caustic a try when I run out of Mors, would be a godsend for reviving some of the tatty repaints I did between 2020 and 2022 if it can strip plastic bodies. The blue I used is just some generic automotive paint we had laying around, matched up rather nicely I thought, been using it on other models as BR blue, namely the scale length Triang Princess model, alongside a modified Hornby 0-4-0 E2 one of my friends wanted me to make for them, running on a Hornby/Dapol terrier chassis, would those be suited for this chat? Modified RTR stock, not kitbashes.IMG_2714.jpeg.3178d2bf712ab3e9251d0bbafddc7353.jpegIMG_1651.jpeg.e7581d3d0fa698d1987d1514148f8f4a.jpeg

They both look great, I especially like the Thomas conversion. If the face wasn’t there I wouldn’t have immediately seen it’s roots!

The model itself isn’t actually the original Thomas variant, the face is a spare I had lying around, the model began as one of the many repaints that Hornby sells for way more than they’re actually worth. Chimney was swapped for one from a busted Keyser 1400, bunker extended with milliput, water caps and other details were taken from the terrier model, I also added a condensing pipe to the left side made out of a thick wire I had lying around. I also attempted to add a front coupler hook from the Keyser model, kept breaking off though so I just used the one from the terrier on the final model. Lamp irons were simply cut-down track pins.IMG_0096.jpeg.6b342cb003b00c5f8c52cf6e9e1ee794.jpegIMG_0075.jpeg.60b52557c3b37906ee62d1247ca40eb5.jpeg

Found the paint, silver hook “gloss blue”, likely not a 100% match but pretty close, do let me know if there are any better alternatives for BR blue though.Untitled6_20231029105357.png.95937fd65d21aa08698ab9d106c20aac.png

Shared on the Kitmaster thread, but it's a kitbash, so off to here it goes! Bought this from Elaine's Trains today for £7, Airfix Biggin Hill on what looks like a Jinty chassis, all I need is crank pins for the centre drivers as I have some spare already, missing the screw threads, but besides that it should be a relatively straightforward restoration!

Graphite from a soft pencil will successfully lubricate the plastic motion.  Plenty of ballast and she should be a good runner.

Running on a Triang chassis, no plastic drive parts (except the insulators). Just needs new centre drivers which I have already, a cylinder block which, again, I already have, a pickup for the insulated wheels and buffers, standard Triang servicing should suffice.

Hi All, I won the auction on the NER BTP/G6 posted a few days ago, sorry if anyone else was bidding! Its an incredibly charming model dare I say it was made when the last of the real things were being withdrawn, but decidedly not a kit bash, rather its entirely scratch built aside from the wheels, the model is made from steel sheet which explains the build-up of rust. It's also unpowered, I'm thinking a peco wonderful wagon and a triang motor bogie may make a suitable method of propulsion.

While the paint is very characterful I think I may give this charming thing a clean up, the rust needs removing and a repaint is in order, I would like to improve the details too, a new dome would match better and a smokebox dart, and I think proper handrails would also lift the model, the handrails are made from wire inserted into the model and another length fitted for the handrail itself with blobby solder for the knob. I'll give it a good clean and degrease first then see how I feel before committing possible sacrilege.

Dang nabbit! I actually was one of the other bidders! At least I know who has it so I can take some comfort in knowing it'll be taken care of.

It saddens me to see one of these in such a state. My own KLR's No.14 is one of these beauties (the two-rail version) and it is probably my favourite diesel in my collection. I'd not even call that that bad if it wasn't for the thickness of the paint and the oversized and badly added number.

Unsure of the origin of this one, looks like a fancy little thing though.

It's a Percy!
*ahem* What I mean is it appears to be a slightly modified Larko Dockside shunter kit to me, judging from that distinctive high-set oval tank. Pretty rare these days. I mentioned Percy as the original model of him by the Rev is bashed from the same kit.

This thread is generally intended for kitbashes and customised engines found in the wild (aka. not made by the poster.)
My pedantry aside, that is a very smart little 0-6-0T. Chimney is a bit tall for my liking personally, but that's just me. I'd also drop down the filler caps so the bottom of the lid is flush with the tank top, it'll help it look more realistic, Good work regardless, keep it up.

The BoB looks phenomenal in blue, almost makes me wonder why it was never put in that livery IRL.
That Molly... not so much. I can't even tell what's going on with the face, though the paint on the main body itself could be worse.

Merchant Navy if I recall correctly, uses a Triang BoB as a base though. Can definitely agree on the livery too, after I’ve restored the Rosebud BoB I bought from Elaine I’m tempted to pick up a Dapol one and paint it up in BR blue.

Back to kitbashed and customised engines found in the wild- how about this? A sort of single Fairlie.

That is indeed a Single Fairlie by the looks. It also seems to be made of Meccano.

Also been genuinely tempted to do a Where Are They Now for all the models that have been featured on this thread and are now in the possession of people on here. Could be quite fun.

Anyway, after a long period of absence, I think it's time for some of what I found on the web. Pictures are linked as per usual for me.

This O-gauge shunter is an interesting beast, and not just because of the somewhat amusing number. Looks like a cross between a rooftop air conditioning pump and one of those self-propelled snowploughs.

An entire T-gauge oval layout in a suitcase. That's new for this thread. Very nicely done as well. I scrolled past it at first then had to basically do a double-take as I really wasn't expecting to see this. I don't do T-gauge and it's a bit alpine for my taste anyway but still nicely done.

Something cute to finish off with. Another product of the infamous gostude, this little 0-4-2ST can't seem to decide in its description if it's in TT or 009 gauge. It's clearly a Pugbash and I do actually quite like the livery, though I don't know why it seems to have a corncob instead of a safety valve. I can definitely see one of you guys doing something with this little thing. Gostude actually has a few interesting Pugbashes on his eBay page at the moment. I'd have put more up if I wasn't running out of image upload space.
