I think Hippo International Performance Platforms Organisation or HIPPO for short would be better. HH be able to remember it.

That one is already in use for the materiel handling division, with special emphasis on Cherry Pickers and the Reach and Tier trucks for high rise warehousing.

I see the Warley NEC show is no more.

Usual problem, a big show being run by volunteers who are all getting older.

I must admit it wouldn't be surprising if a commercial enterprise took it over, but they would have to pay staff..

It doesn't affect me, as I tried the show once, but 10 hours driving and 8 hours fighting your way through the crowds were not my idea of fun, so ive not done it again.

I've never been to the Warley show - a long trip and everyone's description of conditions put me off - but as well as your reason, I can see an analogy to Hattons ceasing trading, just as the Beatties model shop chain closed all those years ago.  All of them grow, and grow, and grow until they actually become too big to manage or be viable (in the case of Beatties, they thought they were in an ever-expanding market which stopped expanding), costs or resources required being unsustainable.  It is a very difficult task to know when you have grown "enough"; in most organisations it is generally the very big and the very small which are most successful.

I strongly suspect that a commercially run Show will replace Warley.  I know that WMRC had a clause in their NEC contract that they were the only organisation allowed to hold Model Railway exhibition there. There were several attempts by commercial organisations to hold such events at the NEC but they didn't work out.

I would fear that a commercially-run show would price out the society stands and specialist traders that have made the Warley show so distinctive - and worth attending - among the larger shows. I don't think there is anywhere else where you would find a similar number of line society stands under one roof.

The Bristol/ Thornbury Show used to be run by the AMRCWWE (Association of Model Railway Clubs Wales and West of England [what a mouthful!]) until it was taken over by the Warner Group, not a tremendous difference INMHO

-3 C here this morning. Clear though with no rain so I will be taking the trailer to Niort to collect a new sofa. I might just drive past a rail served wine bottling plant to see if there is a train there.

If you go to the bottling plant on the way back you can test the sofa at the same time- for quality control purposes of course. You don't want to get all the way back to the chateau and find the sofa's not fit for purpose do you.

I see that today's  Daily Torygraph has run an article on impending demise of the model railway hobby, based on the forthcoming closure of Hattons and the decision of the Warley club to withdraw from the NEC exhibition calendar.

I can't remember exactly, but isn't this a recurring news story that comes up at least twice in a decade?

I suppose they think that the local closures of M&S and Debenhams suggest the demise of underpants.

I spent part of the day doing some gentle sorting in the garage and the work buildings.

Some nice folk required some bits and pieces from my various collection, and, since I was able to find them, packages will be winging their way to pastures new on Monday morning.

What I am not looking forward to is the rebuilding of a pair of ladders from a 7 mm scale Dapol 08 shunter.  I also have another single ladder to rebuild, so with any luck I might have enough extant rungs to at least make one up. The other pair will require a lot of soldering!  I have been putting this off for some time, and diverted my attention to other things.  Another job that I keep pushing to the back of the queue is a set of four fly cranks for a live steamer.

As is always the case, once I get going everything will be fine, but Mr Procrastination needs a self applied boot up the rear on occasions.

Tomorrow we have family calling around for lunch, so any work outside will be severely limited.

I suppose it wouldn't have anything to do with the pigeon that was sent ahead with the note in Franglais asking if they had any samples then. Very unchivalrous that they wouldn't leave you a jug out.

I wonder if our esteemed leader has a relative on the restaurant trade:

or perhaps it's a HH "side hustle"?

p.s. HH the next tim you talk to DH please let him know he's got a PM waiting that he seems to have overlooked...

Eagle-eyed Night Mailers watching “Fool Me Once” on Netflix might spot the Fat Hippo food truck serving burgers in one scene, where the main protagonist’s military police friend chats to the detective investigating the husband’s murder…

I found myself going “Oh, oh! Look! Fat Hippo! RMWeb!! Wow!” And being told to be quiet and stop spoiling the programme! 🤣

I think it is in episode 3 (wasn’t sure which episode as I walked in on Mother binge-watching it!)

Mrs SM42 has been having a bit of a moan.

She caught me perusing some of Piko's announcements for 2024 and said that I really need to start a layout.

Of course she is right.

Just  got to tidy the shed and railway room ( AKA the West Wing) first.

A job made harder by the never ending arrival of detritus in there whilst we decision is made on its future.

Of course there is a list of painting jobs to do also.

Meanwhile she is in the kitchen baking gingerbread and currently wearing out the lighter on the gas hob.

That is probably a good thing to be honest as seeing our glorious leader doling out greasy hamburgers would probably have been a severe shock.

Mind you it does mean he's been preserved for future generations to wonder at such a mighty beast lowering himself to such menial tasks.

All this work pays for such luxuries such as more railways stuff and especially the extra outbuildings in which to store it securely.

As my late grandfather used to say:

'Another day, another dollar'.

Of course as you would imagine we have a part of the business that deals with such storage and security matters:
