Popular Post br2975
One down, only two to go. . This Thursday will see the final scheduled trainload of Welsh mined coal; from Cwmbargoed D.P. (Ffos-y-fran) to Margam, for Tata Steel, Port Talbot. . However, coke will continue to be imported through the Port Talbot deep water harbour until the blast furnaces at Port Talbot cease production later this year. . Importing the coke, instead of mining it here in Wales boosts our 'green credentials' . In order to reduce our footprint further, our leaders at Cardiff Bay are now planning to force Welsh farmers to reduce their livestock herds by 10% and grow trees instead. . All this crossed my mind earlier as I stood in an empty Welsh field, surrounded by trees, awaiting the arrival of the late running 6C83 11:30 Cwmbargoed - Margam, the antepenultimate Welsh coal train. . Welcome to Wales............................. 1 3
Hroth
I'm surprised the trains don't have to run at 20mph too, "to reduce emissions"... 1 7
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted February 20 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20 What a sad state of affairs. I shook my head in disbelief when I saw coal imported to Tyneside some years ago, but it's OK because it's green, because it's someone else's carbon footprint. Pah. 2 11

There is also the 'carbon footprint' resulting from the transport of the coal/ coke from wherever to take into account. 1 hour ago, br2975 said: In order to reduce our footprint further, our leaders at Cardiff Bay are now planning to force Welsh farmers to reduce their livestock herds by 10% and grow trees instead. madness, utter, complete ... 1

Of course once they get wind that the locally produced pure source has been curtailed they'll sell you lower quality stuff at a higher price. I imagine it will need quite a few bags to fill a blast furnace. 2 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted February 20 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 20 Re the coke and blast furnace situation, the idiocy of shutting down all the capacity for the UK to produce it's own steel from raw materials when we have the coking coal and limestone, I better not comment on. Strategic resource comes to mind. In the 1930's the steel industry was subsidised to keep the capacity to produce armour plate and large gun barrels. Anyway today has been interesting. Beth finally got to see the surgeon about her dislocated shoulder. A positive outcome. Her rotator cuff as apparently done a disappearing act but the very nice surgeon is h=going to replace the joint with an inverse prosthesis. Lots to do over the next few days. SM42
Well it seems we escaped the motherland just in time An outbreak of protesting farmers has spread and now the hunting community have joined in. The map of Poland showing locations of protests today looks like a bad case of measles. Access to Poznan Airport was almost impossible today according to our local correspondent. RMweb Premium Dave Hunt Posted February 20 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20 Yesterday early evening I had another go at removing some of the winter detritus from our pond then when I went to do the same thing this afternoon a great big blob of frog spawn had appeared so I've had to leave the place where it is alone until the little ones all get out. Mind you, any excuse not to delve around up to the armpit in bl**dy cold water is gratefully received, especially when you think what the frogs have been up to in there.
