Popular Post DavidMcKenzie
Small update on the southern end tunnel mouths. The tunnel mouths themselves were finished This always feels wrong with the glue scattered all over the trees, but the base greenery went down and it always comes right when it's dry and the glue fixes everything in place Then finally some detailing and mixing some different colours and textures in It's the kind of thing that will hardly notice once trains are running in the foreground, but will hopefully give a plausible backdrop that does not distract the eye too much. Absolutely awesome work Dave. Phil Thanks Phil, I hope you are well. Slow and steady progress here, made a start on weathering a set of IZA wagons. To start with I thought I had just ruined a lovely set of wagons, but with patients and building up a number of layers of grim, they are starting to look ok. They seemed to vary in appearance a lot over their lifetime, I found reference photos from the mid 90s when they were grubby, but not yet covered in graffiti, patched up, or had the information panels re-painted. Still plenty to do picking out little details and weathering the blue ends + buffer beams, but looking forward to getting them out on the layout behind a 90 or 92. All the best, Dave Hi Dave, I hope you are keeping well. The wagons look terrific, your remark about repainted information panels is incorrect i believe. They panels were just cleaned... maybe with a steam cleaner... I don't know. I felt exactly the same as you when I weathered my vans but don't worry they look like minature prototypes now not toys.. great work. Hi Dave, They look great! AFAIK the data panels (showing the wagon number, home depot, owner, contacts for repair etc) were regularly wiped clean simply because they needed to be read from time to time by railway staff. cheers Ben A.

Thanks for the kind messages guys, as soon as I read your comments the penny dropped and of course the difference in colour around the data panels is from cleaning . Small but significant step this week, the station roof has been 'planted'. The horrible gap to the platforms was then filled Plenty of tidying up and blending in to do around the joint, but at least there is no longer a gap and it's all connected. Popular Post DavidMcKenzie
The cargowagons got a out on the layout behind a 92. I got carried away with taking photos, but they are cracking wagons. Looking forward to getting my hands on the next revolution models now (hoping this will probably be the NSE and Silverlink 321s which made the southern section of the WCML an option to model). Exiting the tunnel at the southern end of the layout and heading north to the station itself. The zommed in shots hide some aspects of the layout which still need work, before the missing OHLE and wires can go up. Cheers Duncan Thanks Duncan, I was especially happy with the shot below, it was only an accident that I even noticed it. My little 10 week old daughter woke and wanted her dummy, I only noticed the view when leaning down to check on her, so I have her to thank for that one. A photo prior to cropping (below) shows how much there is still to finish (signals, speed signs, weathering platforms, station walls, foreground, OHLE etc. etc.). But you are right, this was intended as a glorified photo plank and it's slowly taking shape. Once this board is finished I would like to make a reasonably large multi use fiddle yard that will fill a corner of the cellar and allow the scenic sections to be interchangeable (and stock to remain built up in rakes and covered). After all that (could be a few years yet ) I still like the idea you sketched a while back and the challenge of a multi level layout. With some 3rd rail stock coming, this might be an additional challenge in the mix. All the best, Dave 11

Popular Post DavidMcKenzie
Been slow but steady progress here. Some more detailing has taken place, with speed signs going in. I'm not sure if they are perfectly placed, but I've tried my best to find photos of similar prototypical track layouts and copied the speed sign placements from that. Hopefully they are close enough to plausible that they will blend in and give a nice backdrop for the trains. And work on the signals and protective meshes (the gantry is still only bluetac'd in place for now) Not far away from getting the OHLE up as one of the next jobs, this was a nice job on the previous layout and adds the WCML feel. bmthtrains - David
Looking very atmospheric now! How did you cut those speed signs out? I’ve got some to put on eventually but they’re so small I’m not confident with my scissoring. David
RMweb Gold jollysmart Posted May 3, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2022 The layout really is getting the look now, your attention to detail is making the difference and I'm looking forward seeing it when the OHLE is installed. Keep up the good work.
shanks522
Looking great David, love the first picture, it’s like your standing on the platform waiting for a train to appear. Graham. 1
DavidMcKenzie
Thanks for all the kind comments🙂. I cheated with the speed signs. My first attempt looked like hexagons 😅, I then looked for hole punches online, but they were pretty expensive for something I would probably only use once. So I settled on the sheet below from scale model scenery. Not as cheap as printing my own, but was definitely cheaper than the hole punch option. Popular Post DavidMcKenzie
Definitely underestimated the amount of effort needed to modify the OHLE from Maids Morton. This one gantry took a good chunk of the afternoon, but works underway at least. The OLHE will be base on photos from around the Wembley central area and have found a few pictures (one example linked below) from 1997. https://www.flickr.com/photos/101117436@N02/50922583482/in/photolist-5JcGQ1-L9xMah-NcEhwd-NcDScS-2kRJwZG-2j97eK8-2mLbCTY-2j94yT1-2jNiCUu-Hm5X4e-HckhkC-2jJKrs4-NcMggU-2jPzUXQ-2jM4ehe-N8hcf4-E63B4z-SQHnqs-N8h1tp-MNBdtb-MNBkVA-KYY5Cm-EbG3UV-r3wB83-NfLCdM-HGKDuL-5K82j8-Mi6qVd-Mi4Yjj-J1Mkzg-p1LYw4-rjZKQL-2iyjhFj-qohKpx-p1N53R-pgf8JG-J1NnNx-p1Mdn1-r439f4-scKJC7-UAfJRN-D1HPMb-KaTnxy-2hCgYNE-oMryGb-iQmpsk-2kzRxXh-2ko1xzT-2kzMosQ-2iRWi21 One thing I didn't want to copy over from the OHLE on Maid's Morton is how high the pantographs needed to be to get even close to the wires (see same loco below). With tunnels and low stations roofs on North End Road hopefully the wires will hang a little lower. All the best, Dave

Popular Post DavidMcKenzie
Please excuse the low quality camera photos. A little bit of progress with the OHLE. Still plenty to do, one more full span and a few single gantries to prepare and then painting before the wires can go up. But it does feel more like the wcml with them blutac'd in place. A class 86 posing light loco on the slow down. All the best, Dave

RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted June 28, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2022 Hi Dave, Yes, have to agree, you are really making progress with this now.
