Just watched the first 3 episodes of Drive to Survive. A definite anti Mercedes undertone and bias to Red Bullsh@t. Horner quoted as saying " I want that effing driver out of this race" at Silverstone. :ireful:

I cant remember who their reserve driver is, I hope Danny will be fit as well as out of Covid for next week.

Spoiled child syndrome: obviously Nanny never told him "I want doesn't get".

I rather got the impression from the Red Bull "he never said that, to anyone...in fact he never said anything to anyone, er, ever..." comment that Horner had defaulted into whinge mode as usual and the team was having to sit on him as discretely as possible (for which read: having to lie about it, apparently).  IMO one of the best things that could happen for F1 at the moment - and even for Red Bull* - would be for Horner to go completely rogue and "off-message" and be given the boot (preferably literally).

* Though his attitude does seem to chime somewhat with the team's owner, who also seems to be a bit of a posterior orifice - at least going by his company's typical marketing style and its rather toxic affinity with so-called "extreme sports".

Just watched the just released Netflix No 4 series, for the first time. I recomend the Hass programme very interesting scenario.

Well done to Kevin Magnussen a good time on his return, I dont think the Russian would have been even close, to his time !!.

Well even the GREAT Mick wasn't close, and he was twice as good as Marzipan.

Formula 1

@F1

New design, new fastest time!

@SChecoPerez clocks a 1:34.733 in his first flying lap on Day 3

His @redbullracing RB18 is sporting new sculpted sidepods

Red Bull's 'few bits and pieces'

Andrew Benson

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

The new Red Bull parts that team principal Christian Horner called "a few bits and pieces" have emerged.

It turns out these were new side pods and a new floor. The bodywork changes slim down the lower part of the side pod to enlarge the already large cutaway even further, and cut away some of the upper part of the pod about halfway along, while the floor features a new section of waves and cuts at the widest point of the side pod.

Teams are using these to set up vortices that "seal" the floor edges and prevent air leaking into and out of the underfloor, thereby making the underfloor tunnels work better and maximising downforce. Sergio Perez went out on the C3 tyres and set the fastest time of the day so far on his first run.

NO WONDER HORNER BACK TRACKED ON THE MERC SIDE PODS YESTERDAY. :D

Is it really 'tough' for Mercedes?

Andrew Benson

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer.

Are Mercedes in a bit of trouble? Ferrari's Carlos Sainz doesn’t think so - he made that clear on Friday. But after climbing out of his car on the same day, Lewis Hamilton insisted the world champions were having a "tough" test. Hamilton said Mercedes are still struggling with the aerodynamic "bouncing" or “porpoising” that appears to have afflicted them more than many other teams, even if all have it to some degree, and was not happy with the car.

"I mean, you can see on the on-board, tank-slappers left, right and centre," Hamilton said. "And then bouncing and bumping. It’s not quite happy at the moment. But we're trying to tame it."

When it was suggested to him that his rivals thought Mercedes were hiding their true pace, Hamilton said: "We would be really, really, really good if we were, like, having all these oversteer moments and having this tacky driving, just to hide our cars [pace]. It’s not the case. We have things that we're trying to get through. I think, as I said, others are struggling less but who knows? Maybe when we get to next week, we'll have a better understanding."

Post update

We've dipped below two hours left of the morning testing session.

Sergio Perez is leading the pack, eight tenths quicker than Alfa Romeo newbie Guanyu Zhou.

The Alpha Tauri of Pierre Gasly makes the top three with a time of 1:34.865, just 0.04secs ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari in fourth.

Williams hoping for better season

Andrew Benson

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer.

Williams lost most of a day’s running on Friday with the brake failure and subsequent fire that afflicted Nicholas Latifi. As a result, they have changed their programme today to give the Canadian more time in the car, to make up for the laps he lost. Latifi is running this morning, and team principal Jost Capito says he will also get the afternoon. In between, "just after lunch", Alex Albon "will get a qualifying session because he hasn’t done that and so they end up with about the same number of laps."

Williams, Capito said, is suffering for their decision not to take part in the Abu Dhabi tyre test at the end of last season, when teams tried the new 18-inch tyres. This was made in 2020, before the takeover by new owners Dorilton Capital, on the basis of resources. "I was sure this was a disadvantage and it turned out it was quite a disadvantage," Capito said, explaining that it meant the team had a lot of learning to cram into a short space of time on the behaviour of the five compounds.

Capito said Williams had a sense of the competitive order - but this was different to what it had been in Barcelona two weeks ago because of the rougher track and warmer, windier conditions. "Nicky says the car is easier to drive," he said. "That doesn’t mean it’s quicker but if a driver has better confidence he will drive quicker. And Alex is very happy with how the car drives. What he experienced in the simulator is very similar to what he experiences on the track." Williams’s target? To improve over last year - and also through the season to come.

"Last year we had the ninth fastest car,” Capito said. "The objective is to be better than we were last year so we have to be seventh or eighth. And if we are the fifth now, we have to be the third or fourth (by the end of the year). It is more the development through the year than where we kick off from."

So, has Horner dropped so far out of the loop that the team are not even telling him what they are up to any more?

Or maybe he just didn't bother asking before shooting his mouth off?

Could he be on the way out?

We can only hope....

Drive to Survive: Producers say Formula 1 is 'not run for Netflix'

Quote

...some within F1 have suggested the show creates, or at least exaggerates, narratives.

Wolff was quoted this week as saying: "They create a spin to the narrative. They put scenes together that didn't happen. I guess you'd say as an insider: 'Well, that's different than how it was.'

...

Paul Martin - one of the show's creators - takes a different view, telling BBC Sport: "Over the four series, Drive to Survive hasn't over-editorialised anything."

Verstappen is another from within the sport to have voiced some criticism for the documentary - and he doesn't give original interviews to its makers.

He said of the series: "They faked a few rivalries which don't really exist."

Has no-one pointed out to Netflix or the show's producers that even just its title - though containing a superficially pleasing assonance - is both misleading and unnecessarily melodramatic?  Maybe they feel that the show itself has to try to live up to the warped expectations that the title seems to set.

Interesting that Max doesn't seem to want to give them the time of day.

Interesting, is the Alfa good, or is this Rookie the real deal?

We shall see next week no doubt.

Having watched a bit of testing this morning, this remains the year of the porpoise. In-car shots of Alfonso's bonso bouncing up and down towards the end of the straight - before the braking zone -are not indicative of a car doing as required. Plenty of other teams suffering too, although Red Bull does not appear to be among them, which is ominous.

Was it only a year ago that Tsunoda wowed us in the pre-season test, and spent the rest of the season trying to repeat that? Whatever, Zhao in the Alfa appears to be on the same positive mission, so the car must be much improved. Bottas's forced decision, at this stage, may not have been the come-down we had feared for an above-average driver.

It may well be that some teams are testing this and that, motors detuned, and running with varying fuel-loads, but I do wonder whether this afternoon will see a final unleashing of potential, and give us a better idea of what to expect for the season opener.

No Ricciardo on Saturday

Unfortunately, we wont get to see Daniel Ricciardo at all today after McLaren confirmed the Australian has tested positive for Covid-19.

He's promised team-mate Lando Norris a gallon of milk for shouldering the responsibility over the last three days.

McLaren say Ricciardo should be released from isolation in time for next week's season opener.
