Elsecar Heritage Railway looking bare

Dropped in at Elsecar today, and found a pretty bare looking site, with only 4 vehicles on the rails: 2 locos, a GW brake van and a Sturgeon-looking wagon. No sign of the Mk1s that they had.

Rebuilt Sentinel Elizabeth in the foreground, Louise and wagon in the background, a boiler on the left on the ground:

The two locos again:

Hunslet Louise:

GW brake van 68499:

Off the rails was still the broken wagon underframe:

And a sign saying it's now Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council property:

i'm puzzled what the boiler is from because both The Monster and the Earl have left for new homes else were. The wagon chassis is whats left of a private owner 12 ton that was rotting away behind the loco shed, there wasnt much left of the body anyway when i last saw it some years ago

Don't know anything about the site, but a quick look at the entry on Google Maps brings up some user submitted photos which seemingly show the boiler and smokebox in question:

Don't know any more details, and this is the first time I've even heard of the line, but it looks lovely; here's hoping something will be done to secure its future!

On slight plus point BR CCT and a Dogfish ballast wagon full of ballast & vegetation arrived at Lincolnshire Wolds Railway recently.

From a purely local interest however what happened to William the Sentinel shunter ex Courtaulds  Grimsby??

Did the new line extension get finished, before they give up the ghost ?

I think the track is there (to almost Cortonwood colliery/retail park) but there was a lot of wrangling over a road level crossing.

Looks like a smokebox to me. There appears to be a central wheel and locking handle on the door. Can't see if there is a boiler attached.

Second photo shows it is a boiler. Looks like that from RSH 0-4-0st ‘Birkenhead’ to me. I think this was dismantled for overhaul at Elsecar a few years ago?

Dropped in at Elsecar today (12 March ‘23). Track mostly lifted in the station area, with notices explaining it’s for archaeological explorations. This newspaper article:

https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/heritage/elsecar-heritage-railway-track-to-be-lifted-at-scheduled-monument-site-in-yorkshire-but-sustainable-future-likely-for-attraction-3957274

explains that the station is now a scheduled ancient monument, hence the investigations. Also hints at future plans for the site.

The only rail vehicles visible today were the Sentinel loco ‘Elizabeth’, a GW brake van and a wrecked wagon chassis. Photos later with a bit of luck.

a little story about the Toad i just remembered, it was on long term loan from the NRM under agreement that they restore it and then give it back after so many years, so they intentionally did it with the wrong sized planking so NRM wouldnt want it back until it was fixed and theyve kept it ever since

The website link in the archaeology photo leads to 'page not found', but google has it cached at

Over recent months, thanks to the extensive and positive response to consultation earlier in the year, an inspiring new vision has been coming together for the future of a heritage railway in Elsecar.

That vision to create a sustainable future for a heritage railway in the village will need significant investment, which is currently being explored. We look forward to revealing more details of that vision over the coming weeks and months.
Thanks to the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone's work, the railway station area and yard site, originally the Elsecar Ironworks, are now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. This means that we need a very close understanding of archaeology and ground conditions to plan for future structures that may be required for that new vision for the heritage railway.
Over the coming weeks, sections of the modern track in the station area, laid since the 1990s, will be lifted so archaeological digs and ground investigations can take place. This will also allow small temporary structures and cabins, which belong to third parties, to be removed from the site. We are also doing seasonal maintenance work to the rest of the track route.
The Railway Trust handed its lease to the land back to the Council in 2020. This did not include any rolling stock.
A great deal of work has been carried out to establish how a successful and sustainable heritage railway offer can be re-established at Elsecar, reflecting the pride in our railway heritage and what it can mean for our region’s visitor economy. We look forward to sharing more about that work and the resulting vision soon.

Looks like Barnsley council have had consultants come up with a £25M idea involving rebuilding the site and a new 1849 steam loco.

No mention of where they will attempt to get the funds from nor how or who would operate the railway.

Oh goody. An outdoor performance area. That's always a sure sign of something awful.
