Cast white metal range of 00 industrial locomotives?

Recommended Posts

I have purchased a couple of built and painted cast white metal locomotives. The chassis's were also cast metal.

I think I remember there used to be a range of 00 cast white metal industrial kits but cannot remember the name of the range.

I believe the range was acquired by Adrian Swain.

Can anyone tell me the name of the range please?

Thanks.

Can you post some photos of your locos?

Those are almost certainly Centre Models kits.

to the RSH one.

Could the other one be a 16" Hunslet?

I don't recall there being many kits in the Centre Models range, I remember a KS Victory & possibly a Hunslet 50550 (forerunner of the Austerity).

Both kits look well finished, I think you have found a bargain there Gordon.

Thanks everyone.

I need some new safety valves, brass, for the Hunslet. Any suggestions?

I will be replacing both chassis's as I dabble in P4.

I will be checking Mike edges Hunslet kit that is in my stockpile.

I may have a chat with Chris G re the RSH chassis.

Yes, the chassis looks to be exactly the same design as my Kerr Stuart Victory from Centre Models:

For 'pop' type valves, if that's what they are, I have become fond of old Triang turned brass ones, which can be picked up cheaply from ebay. They even come pre-weathered due to their age!

I think Polly is a model of an RSH saddle tank.

And this one is a model of a Hunslet, but I am not sure which type.

16", easiest way to distinguish it from a 15" is the leading sandboxes under the footplate.

And the hand rail knobs. 15" locos have four along the tank side. To be fair I would want to measure the overall length. It has a look of a fifteen and a half........

Centre Models, assuming it was the same firm, also made kits of Leek & Manifold stock, including loco, coaches, transporter wagon, and I think a van. They were quite challenging (!) to build well, but (other people’s) looked very good when completed.

Centre Models also did a Midland 3F and a GCR(?) / LNER J?; (I know little of such things).

I bought the former, but it remains unbuilt - if such a feat is possible!!

I resorted, in due course, to the subsequent MPD Models kit.

I have an Avonside, the Hunslet 16",  Kerr Stewart Victory , a RSH and a 3F. Missed out on the big Hunslet.

If you put some work in they looked OK.the Avonside and 16"  have Sharman wheels fitted.. I am sometimes a glutton for punishment!

Hi Baz,

Are there issues with Sharman wheels? I've just acquired some from the remaining stocks at Phoenix precision paints, are there shortcomings/pitfalls I should be wary of?

Many thanks

Paul A.

These were fine. Some larger diameter ones used to bow/dish. Some find them difficult to fit and quarter. These were fine.

If they are the nylon centred ones which PP produced they will be very good, if they are older they might be OK but the original plastic wasn’t entirely stable. If they aren’t concentric they can’t be machined because of the (unnecessarily) deep undercut into the steel tyre. I have recently fitted a very old set to a P4 L&Y 4-4-0 and they were fine.

Fancy meeting 'Geoffrey' here🙂.  I'm sure you must remember him Gordon after all the happy hours spent with him on 'Enigma Engineering'!
