60103 Flying Scotsman is 100 on 24th February next year and celebrations have already started with 60103 having been on display on Saturday and Sunday on platform 8 in King's Cross station.

Celebrations include: the loco visiting the Bluebell and Keighley Worth Valley Railways, on static display in the Railway Museum at York, a visit to Locomotion, three "The Waverley" railtours hauled by the loco from York and much more. Hornby are releasing several models of the famous locomotive in the many guises it has worn over the last 100 years and a specially commissioned 6 wheel teak coach commemorating the event.

So to celebrate this big event, I decided to start this topic. Photos can be of models or the real thing.

Here are a few photos in 1968 and 1973.

The first photo is of her working a special at Skipton.

The next three are explained below.

As some of you know after Bill McAlpine purchased her she was kept for a time, from 1973, at Market Overton at the ex British Steel shed there, accessed from the ECML via the High Dyke branch from the junction at the north end of Stoke Tunnel, then along the branch and onto the ex British Steel lines through Sewstern to Market Overton.

Note, all the photos were taken with permission to be trackside.

From 2016 after she'd returned to the rails after a lengthy absence.

On 2nd April 1966 a few of us Carlisle lads, despite severe blizzard conditions ovenight, decided to go to to Carleton (2.5 miles south of the station) on a local bus to photo 4472 Flying Scotsman on the 'Stephenson Locomotive Society / Manchester Locomotive Society Lakes & Fells Rail Tour'. The train was coming up the Settle line then down the WCML to Penrith, then on to Keswick hauled by 2 Ivatt 2-6-0 locos.

After we got off the bus. we struggled along a footpath through two foot snow drifts to the railway line and waited. Unknown to us the train was delayed waiting for a snowplough to reach Hellifield resulting in departure from Hellifield 54mins late. Meanwhile we were all freezing while standing in snow at the entrance to the cutting at the end of the embankment.

Eventually, 79 mins late, we saw a plume of smoke approaching. My friends had decided to go to the cutting a couple of hundred yards south from where I was standing by the embankment. As the train approached I fired off a couple of shots, the latter one resulted in the photo below. However, immediately as I clicked the shutter, a class 40 on a long down freight hurtled past. Needless to say my friends never got any decent photos due to the freight blocking the shot. To say they were annoyed is an understatement and they expressed their annoyance very verbally indeed!

I used my new yellow/green filter on my Ilford Sportsman camera that day and it certainly brought the sky out

brilliantly.

4472 Flying Scotsman on an LCGB special at Didcot on 27th October 1973 (during the 15 months I possessed a hopeless 35mm camera called a 'Paulette' - I should have guessed!):

(I wonder whether the GWS discovered one of their coaches was missing after the train had departed........no, I'm sure it was intentional!!)

Visited the Keighley Worth Valley Railway on 26/05/23 to ride behind the locomotive for the first time. The loco was top and tailing with Standard 2mt 78022 as it was too big to fit in the headshunt at Oxenhope so it couldn't run round its train. 78022 worked Oxenhope - Keighley and 60103 worked Keighley - Oxenhope.

Other locos working that day were Class 20 20031 and Standard 4mt 75078.

Here’s my mate popping the Exeter train in front of the assembled photographers as it shunts back into the station 🤣 I was up doing the yard spots when I heard the cry’s of anguish as the Exeter caught up and quickly captured the moment 😉

Hatfield (Herts) today - it’s not the best ever attempt at taking a picture as I wasn’t really expecting it but if my train hadn’t been a few minutes late I’d have missed the photo altogether:

And on its way back this evening, just south of Brookmans Park:

I made a bit more effort this time (as opposed to Scotsman just appearing during my commute) although in some ways the photos aren’t as good.
