Boxchester - Heljan 47 fleet

Recommended Posts

It's going to perhaps be a slow process.

And I will be repainting this without an airbrush.....however it is going to be a work worn gronk, so perhaps I will get away with it.

STAGE 1.

Remove the body. And remove all the existing transfers. I will see if I can get away with painting over some of the remaining red lining.

Thanks Steve, I can't help getting tempted by the military modelling videos and all the new weathering products that appear! The latest being oil brushers, I want to try dot fading.

This is one of my 31s.

Quite a good way to weather them, Steve.....

Is base paint is oil based. And then cover most of it especially around the grills with weathing powder, water based frame dirt style muck and then rub in and remove with kitchen paper and cotton buds, It leaves the gunk in right places.

STAGE 2

Basic paint. I am not being too careful at this stage. A coat of frame dirt over the underside and bufferbeams. Just a first pass. It knocks the reds back ready perhaps for some yellow. Railmatch blue over the white as a first coat, the roof actually will become a frame dirt colour. As you can see the removal of the transfer at the end means the black needs touching up. So it's work in progress, it will take several passes. But the aim is to have everything in its correct base colour, nothing detailed. For example as long as the sides are blue that is all that matters at this stage.

The only care taken is to keep the paint thin and not get it in the wrong places.

Not convinced on the rail match faded blue and not convinced on how well I can paint it on. When I compare it to 08375 it looks clumsy. I will revisit tomorrow. I might conceded defeat and get some kind person on here to respray it. Which I had to do with my Dapol 73. Given that my Heljan 25 is a very lemon yellow I might get that done too.

Meanwhile 33053 enters the fuel point.

If anyone reading this can respray the 08 a faded rail blue and a Heljan 25 nose ends the correct yellow please get intouch.

Thanks

Steve

That 31 looks great! Was the underframe dealt with in the same way?

It's a shame you've had no luck with the 08, I have the exact same loco and I'm not sure what I to do with it. I think brush painting can be very difficult especially on loco's. There is a guy on here who has brush painted an 08 in O gauge, have you seen it?

The underframe on the 31 was the same. A coat of railmatch frame dirt then a darker wash of wet weathering powder and then the excess rubbed off with cotton buds. Leave the silver on the buffershanks untill last. You can also mix up some talc powder with paint to create grease on the buffers.

I havent seen the O gauge paint job, I guess it is a bit easier at a larger scale. I think the 08 might look OK but I would not be happy with it if I compared to my other effort. I will persevere with it for a day or two more. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I am not conviced I will be happy with it.

Ok, good luck with 08, I'll look forward to the outcome, I know in the end it will look great.

Although I have improved it since the picture above. I can't live with it and I am slowly taking the paint off. It will take some time.

Body is now off the 25. I do have a suitable rattle can colour for the fronts. So I will get stuck into that and will slowly work on the 08.

Jury's out on the 08. Stripped virtually all the paint off one side. Broke the hand rail doing so. Making a new wire hand rail that will look better than the original anyway. Will test weather over part of the LNER blue. We shall see. Might be the first one I have seriously mucked up, might not be.

Boxcester has a southern region feel today. Resprayed, renumbered and weathered 73122 in the yard with newspaper stock.

Class 25 progress.

Pictured here on one of my photo planks.

Front has been sprayed the right yellow. New OLE transfers and some silver taken of the windscreen wipers.

The sides have the numbers and two of the OLE transfers off. More difficult to remove than some of my Bachmann locos. They seem to be more ingrained into the paint. Now renumbered 25190 with fox numbers, as they seemed the right size.

Also blanking steel sheets put on. The blanking plates provided for the bodyside steps sit proud, so a bit of plastic putty used.

Next will be a touch of Railmatch blue on the putty. Silver on the window surrounds and a mucky darker framed framedirt colour on the roof and paint in other places where required.

Cheers

Well lost my mojo for a few weeks. But half got it back again today.

So lots of progress with 25190.

The first pass finished. Lots of tweaking to do especially around the windows, the roof and the underframe.

Some very cruel shots

Someone kindly pointed out the body is on the wrong way. Stupid thing is I even checked pictures before I put it back on.

The Bachmann 08 is still languishing at the back of the cupboard.

An engineering train is my current project. Might also purchase 47012 and slowly replace my tubby duffs.

Class 40012 has not seen the light of day for a while. An appropriate companion to 25190.

A Second hand shark is my latest edition. I am pleased with this one.

Parcels traffic in the yard.

I won't have much time for modelling soon. But a yellow engineers coach and 47012 are next on my list to purchase.

Cheers

Good work with the Heljan Class 25, makes me wish I hadn't sold mine now!

Don't give up with the 08, I've been repainting mine for about 6 months now and it's still not finished!

20

That is looking good. Which paint did you use to respray it? Mine is relegated to the back of the cupboard.....for the time being. Untill I have the mojo to bring it out.

The Heljan 25.My criticisms are,

The ends were lemon yellow - nothing a bit of paint couldnt fix

I would have liked to have seen wire handrails by the doors - the bent plastic ones never look as good. Perhaps I will make some wire ones at somepoint, as I did for my old Bachmann 25.

The transfers were not easy to remove, not Heljans fault. They didn't make it to have the transfers removed.

However a vast improvement over my old Bachmann 25. A nice model overall. I like the fact the buffer beam detail is all in place.

Cheers

Steve

You do incredible work! Very inspirational as well, as I'm working on both an engineers train and newspaper train. How do you get the dark weathering in the recesses on your brake coach? Do you use weathering powders or paint/washes?

Hi Steve,

Mine's repainted using colours I mixed myself. Started off as Lifecolor Rail Blue and went from there.

You're completely right about the 25. Mine had distorted cab front handrails too and I was less than impressed with the wipers. The ends are very non-warning yellow - I find this odd because my Heljan 26's are a much better shade of yellow. I normally don't mind doing cosmetic work to my locos but for some reason just did not have the patience with this one so sold it. A shame because 25's are probably my favourite locos.

Hi Matt

Thank you for information on the paint.

I agree the wipers were not the best, I toned them down for the eye is not drawn to them. I also almost sold it on like you.

If 25s are your favourites then perhaps see if you can get a Sutton Loco Works one as they look great and with your weathering it would end up looking really good.

Matt

It is the same for me. Many new locos are now out of my price range too. I picked that Heljan 25 up for 120 pounds. I am a 100 to 140 pounds guy and a lot of locos are now heading towards if not 200pounds. I think I would find it too expensive to get into the hobby in a big way if I started now.

Best wishes

Steve

Thank you for your encouragement Matt.

I use weathering powders but wet.

I mix up from black, brown, rust and white a darker version of frame dirt and take a small amount and mix with a drop of water and use a small brush to get into the recesses
