You do incredible work! Very inspirational as well, as I'm working on both an engineers train and newspaper train. How do you get the dark weathering in the recesses on your brake coach? Do you use weathering powders or paint/washes?

Matt.I keep getting timed out very quickly tonight. Here are a few more pictures. 3rd attempt. I used that method on them.

Steve

Absolutely incredible work! 😎

I found your thread in a section of the forum I don't tend to get to visit often and it's firmly being followed now!

Thats very kind of you James. I am taking a break for a few months as work has become very busy. But will pick things up again and update in the Autum.

I have the latest Accurscale Ferry Van to weather which I am looking forward to and my engineering train to finish. I also have that 08 to salvage.

Here is an older work in progress picture.

Hoping to finish my engineering train in a few months. I have no time for modelling at the moment.

A couple of pictures, 73122 basking in late afternoon light and 56001 on the stabling point for the weekend.

Now saying to myself I need a class 73 in BR Blue 🤔😍

Good to see an update Steve. The 08 is looking very nice, love the fading. something I want to do myself at some point.

I've been practising fading on some wagons, the one on the right is the original colour and the one on the left has had a pass of a Lifecolour dust wash from an airbrush.

I also faded this using Humbrol Dust wash and a flat paint brush.

I really like the Dogfish as well, something I've started on. I'll be happy if I can get them to look half as good as yours! 👍

That dust wash you have used looks really effective. I might look into that.

Something to try...on top of your effective fading

How I get the dirt into the crevasses and to build up. Id I mix up a weathering powder equivalent of frame dirt paint it wet into all the corners and along edges where dirt might build up and leave to dry.

Then I rub off and work in with cotton buds usually in horizontal motion as that is the way water runs down the sides of stock. (This is illustrated with my first two 08 pictures)

I have my other 08 out now. And I hope tomorrow to have a big session to see if I can finish them. Even though I am pretty experienced with this weathering thing by now I am always a bit nervous I will muck it up at the last moment.

When you say paint it wet, do you just mix it with water, and once dry a water-soaked cotton bud to remove it?

I find the airbrushing a bit hairy but very effective and by no means essential, one slip of the finger and way too much paint comes out!

I've also learnt that things take a lot longer to dry sometimes, I'm in the James Makin school of thought now of waiting weeks for a coat of varnish to fully harden.

The enamel washes take a while to dry I found as well.

Yes I mix the powder with water so it can be painted on. Not too thick or too wet but a nice mid useable consistency. Then I let it dry, it doesn't take long, the water seems to evaporate away pretty quickly.

I then use dry cotton buds. You will  need a lot of them, after a stroke or two a cotton bud end is dead. On bigger surfaces I have also used kitchen paper to wipe away excess weathering power.

I used to airbrush. But my place isn't big and I no longer have the kit. I think it still is the best way to get initial base colours or fading on like you have done. And then for me the powders create the detail in the weathering

My only non rail blue loco. Which doesn't get much of an outing, 56040 Oystermouth with my two Dutch wagons. 56001 is very lightly weathered so 56040 was made a bit gubbier as a contrast. Here she is on the fuel point before collecting two wagons from the yard.
