Various Items for Sale

Hi Guys, hope all are well.

This is my first post on the forum as I’m usually just a read and observe. But a friend of mine who’s father in law passed away recently has acquired an huge amount of 00 gauge items. Mostly Bachmann an Hornby with a few Heljan in the mix. There are also 2 sound fitted models from SLW Class 24s I believe.

All of these items are BNIB as they were just collected and never used or displayed.

He is based in Wolverhampton England and prefers items to be collected.

There is no set price for any of these items as he wants a fair price and for them to go to someone who is going to use them.

I will attach photos below and if anyone is interested in any of the locos please kindly let me know and I can make arrangements from there.

This is an amazing collection which is being sold so they can be used and appreciated, so a good chance there are some gems in here that people will be very interested in but as you can imagine it’s also an upsetting time for the family so please keep this in mind.

I'm sorry for your friend's loss and I appreciate that this is a difficult time for his family.

Selling a huge collection like this is no easy task and would normally entail a huge amount of work by family and friends. You will probably find, when the time is right to sell the collection, that someone will have to go through it and list each and every individual item and then advertise it, either here on RMWeb or perhaps through EBay.

I know this, because earlier this year I (and three like-minded friends) sorted through a very large collection of model railway stuff that belonged to a mutual friend, who died suddenly and far too young (he was 67). It took us about four months to sell the bulk of the stuff and then we took a break, but there is still a small proportion of the collection still to sell.

Your friend's family may find the whole process easier if you approach one of the dealers, particularly one who could go to the house and assess the collection for themselves and then make an offer. If accepted, the dealer could then potentially take the collection away in their own transport.

I spoke to one dealer in particular who was prepared to come down south from the North of England to assess the models that we had to dispose of. In the end, we went down a different (more labour-intensive) route to dispose of our friends models, albeit one that probably netted a large amount for the family.

Please PM me if you would like to know the name of the dealer that I spoke to, who was prepared to travel.

With this amount of stock, you could consider using a specialist auction house to sell the items for you. They would obviously take commission for their work but you may get a better overall total than from a dealer who has to sell all the items individually. Vectis are one such firm, but there are others too.

I agree with the Captain. I disposed of a friends stock and ended up buying a tripod and making a little white booth to photograph everything, then set up a spreadsheet with all the stock on, decide whether to sell individual coaches or rakes, which wagons to bundle together, then create the ebay items and update the spreadsheet with the winner, pack the items and down to the Post Office. It took months. Never again with a large collection like your friend has.

Approach a retailer who collects collections, but make absolutely certain that they will take everything, you don't want somebody who cherry picks the good stuff and leaves your friend with the dross.

I'd agree with all the above.

I have a large OO collection that I am thinning out prior to emigrating. It very similar in model types to this collection i.e. modern image. I would offer the following observations as someone actively selling at present

  1. There is some seriously tasty models in the collection that will get a very good price if sold directly in the current market, but also a lot of stuff that is not going to sell for much
  2. I offered a substantial bundle of stock to two of the outfits that advertise heavily as buying secondhand - their offers were within a £2 of each other......
  3. Listing on Ebay etc is time consuming and fees are high, but it is effective for sought after items.

Assuming you don't want to try and sell everything individually you want to cherry pick the really good stuff to sell direct, then either sell the rest to a dealer or do bundles on Ebay or somewhere. I had a huge collection of container wagons and bundled them up and sold the lot for a price that was less than individual sales but more than dealers offer, so quids in and saved lots of time and hassle. Doing a google search on each item will give a good clue to value.

Whatever you do I would strongly suggest creating a clear list of items with caltalogue number and description as a starting point, then punt it about to see what responses you get.

In my experience with a recent dealer job lot valuation the figure was around 30% of the 'new' or 'secondhand' value if that makes sense!

I did extensive valuations and calculations with 'sold/selling' prices arrived at from ebay and generally from internet dealers. Hope this helps.

It's a simple equation. If you want to sell it quickly and with minimum effort then you will net the smallest profit.  If you do the work yourself and take you time, then you get the best return. Up to you on how much effort you want to put in and the amount of money you want!

Hi everyone, I have received a lot of messages about my post, some of the items have been bought already and I’m in the process of working through the messages and will respond to everyone.

I am also in the process of creating a spreadsheet of all items so it will give everyone a clearer idea of what is there.

thanks everyone

This thread is not actually the place to sell things. You need to be able to sell via the Classified thread. This would mean putting some effort into listing and photographing items and posting them in either individual item or groups of items.

All I will say is to agree with others there are some exceptionally nice and desirable locos and rolling stock within the collection. It suggests that the collection was quite selective in getting a lot of high quality models. If possible selling via ebay using the £1 fees options or through here / facebook groups is the way to go, though it is a lot more effort of course. As an example the mk1 pullman twin pack in west coast railway company livery have often gone for ~£200 alone on ebay, whereas most dealers would probably give you £50-60 for this on the basis of two nice coaches at most.

  • 1 month later...

Did anyone who tried to buy things from this ad ever receive their items? I’m trying not to think the worst but nothing has arrived over a month later. Would be good to know if just me or if others are waiting too.

thanks, Matt
