Best paint for BR faded blue.

Hi everyone.

A quick question. Which is the best off the shelf paint that most accurately represents BR faded blue.

What shade of faded?

 

It varies within any individual loco and from one loco to another. It's also graduated. The best thing is to mix varying amounts of pale grey or white into standard blue to taste. I probably use 4 or 5 shades mixed on any such loco.

I was thinking of weathering another 08, as in one of the very faded ones.

 

Your method makes total sense so I will use that.

I have used powders to date. I am pretty pleased with the results, but I find them a bit limiting as to how faded I can go and the results I can get.

The Western looks spot on.

Something like this?  I too have pondered the correct shade of Rail Blue as some models seem far too dark to me, but then the real thing probably faded so quickly.

As others have already said, mixing your own shade is the way to go.

The lady at McKinley railway has done some fading with a big flat brush and paint , might be worth a look,

 

The problem with railmatch , is surely that’s a full repaint job ?

It’s McKinley edition 61 .

she uses oil brusher paints  - that’s not the finished item incidentally !

I've airbrushed it gently over factory finishes where numbers and insignia are not an issue. Panels on 08 shunters would work well I suspect.

I use Phoenix Precision or Railmatch faded rail blue. To fade it even more I add a bit of matt white.
