porkie
This is my new layout. Im in the early stages of building at the moment. Based on the WCML. So it could be pretty much anywhere north of the capital. Thanks for looking. Phil Edited July 16, 2023 by porkie Spelling errors
porkie
Not much of an update, I have been doing my research, and watched various You tube cab rides of various areas. Over and over to get everything planned and get my shopping list updated. After talking to David about his 2 brilliant layouts, North End Road and Maids Morton. Both Based on the WCML. I worked out that 6, 4 track ohl mast's will be need. So my order with N brass was placed and I now have the masts and register arms. Took a bit of a gamble and purchased a raised lineside relay platform with boxes. Just to see how it would look. Obviously it will be sat higher up inside the embankment. But you get the basic Idea. The fiddle yard is almost complete, just 4 more sets of points to order to get the track work completed. Then the fun and games of adding feed's and isolation sections can begin. Thanks for looking. Benjamin Brady
Looking forward to seeing this layout progress, The quality of n gauge now makes me think I should swap gauges. What size is the layout? Less is more and this is going to nail that concept. Excellent start what shall be a great project.

The layout is 8ft by 3ft So I roughly have the scenic size of 6ft X 1ft 6"

Phil, I like the concept, just wondering if you considered going the other side of the Bleakhall - MK Bowl bridge, and doing the section to the Chaffron Way bridge which would include the start of Denbigh Hall North Junction, thus having some of the ladder junction in the scenic section? As for that Google image, when was it taken? There's no traffic on Standing Way which isn't prototypical these days.....

Davexoc, Too been honest I looked at various sections of the WCML from Wolverton down to the lakes estate. It wasn't until I was stuck in traffic funny enough on standing way. I looked over and spotted this bit, on my way to work. As for the traffic in the Google maps picture. That is odd, as its always busy. The workshop doors are open where I work. So definitely a work day. Unless they had that section closed for road work's at the time. Phil.
DavidMcKenzie
Hi Phil, Great spot you've found to model, looks like a perfect backdrop to watch trains go by. Looking forward to following your progress. All the best, Dave
porkie
Well had a busy weekend, visited Ivanhoe model railway club show yesterday and managed to pickup the final 4 points needed to complete the fiddle yard. Today I had a few hours free. So got on & fitted the points to the fan section of the fiddle yard. Also fitted the feeds to the layout.
porkie
Well had a few spare minutes today so had a bit of fun, testing stock and running on every bit of track.
RMweb Premium njee20 Posted March 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 14, 2023 I like the dead end fiddle yard roads, good way to use that dead space in the middle. May have to steal that idea, ideal for MUs. 1

So pretty much anything can be routed to those road's if needed 👍
Benjamin Brady
Focussing on the design I like the way the four tracks reduce to two. You only really need two trains running at a time and it stops the inside line having a tight curve. I know on our own layout we have just gone with 4 separate circuits but the inside line does carry some stock restrictions I like the liner train with the pair of RFD 47s
porkie
Not really much of an update. Still doing my research, and trying to find best source for tree's and scenery bit's and bobs. I've put a few loco's threw their paces on every section of track. No failures so far, only another hour or so of testing. And that will be my 4hrs of running test done. I may tackle a little section of ballasting once I have found a suitable colour to match the pictures I have seen. I know that it's not a true set up of a Euston to Scotland sleeper service. Just keeping an eye out for a MK2 RFB, and maybe a couple more TSO'S. Edited March 22, 2023 by porkie
porkie
Been sketching pictures over the weekend. On scenery and backscene ideas. This is my final plan. On what I would like to see on my layout. 4
porkie
My other little bit of interest I want to create is a power feeder mast and sub station. As I have never seen it modelled before. I have a sub station already, just need to source materials to attempt the mast.
porkie
Been felting over the long weekend, and started to create backscene and one of the end road bridges. Now that these two are roughly where I want them. I can start working out what size polystyrene I need for the embankment drop to track level. aleopardstail
there is something very appealing about a layout where you can just watch a train go past, no worrying about platform lengths or anything like that as you only have the yard lengths to worry about - and even then a bit of manual operation off stage can see an overly long freight train split and reformed. and this one is clever, that fiddle yard design and the end curves as others have noted is excellent. and the overall design makes it easy to hold a train on the slow lines in view while a fast one goes past so even better loving it, the scenic bit looks good too, especially since you have the end curves off stage so no need to even pretend why there is a sharp curve like the concept and the execution, shows what N can do 1 1
porkie
Started abit of kit bashing, and have assembled the bridge for the North end of the layout. Still got a bit of tidying up to do but happy with the end result so far. I Used an old Dapol mast from my old layout. To set up the overall height of the bridge. Thanks for looking Phil
lilchris
Hi there, I like your curved track leading to your fiddle yard, I hope you have better running than I have had with curved points. I gave up on them and settled for straight track, I even tried wiring them different. I have a few extra sidings added onto my fiddle yard, not has many as you though, seems a shame to waste that space. Will be nice to see how you progress with the scenic section. porkie
Carried on building bridges over the weekend. The Modern south bridge is almost complete. Must admit it looks a little lost with no embankment either side

RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted April 27, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 27, 2023 Hi there, Nice project, and you're making great progress. I really like the sub-station idea. What era(s) are you aiming to depict? The stock I can see suggests early 90s. cheers Ben A.
