BR Standard 5 liveries

They were all built new in lined black 'mixed traffic' livery, but a change of policy in 1956 gave regions more autonomy in livery choices, and the WR and SR began painting some standards in lined green passenger livery.  This occurred with the Class 5MT, 4MT 4-6-0, 3MT 2-6-2T, and 2MT 2-6-0 (78xxx).  Some tank engines appeared in unlined green 'economy' livery.

The WR used lined green passenger livery post-1956 on many locos that had never carried it before, including small and large prairies (not the 3150s), 56xx, 54xx, 64xx, 14xx, 43xx, Manors, and Granges.  In the case of the Manors and Granges, all were eventually given lined green passenger livery.  Some Old Oak Common panniers of the 15xx and 8750 classes were given lined black mixed traffic livery.  As well as the Standards mentioned, some WR-allocated Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0s also appeared in lined green passenger livery.

Very simple question:  Some Standard Class 5 (and 4s) are green and some are black.  What determined this?  Was it based on the region they operated in or was it based on other factors?

…. shortage of cleaners???🤫

Don't forget the North Wales and Midland sheds were all transferred to the London Midland Region in 1963. As well as normal transfers many of the WR green 5MTs ended up as LMR engines.

73014. Under all that muck it's green.

Got about a bit. Relevant as Bachmann did that one in green.
