I was going to remark that the cab floor looked quite a trip hazard, but then I read the caption!!!! I'm guessing the footplate covered up the pipework?

Interesting.I didn't know that oil fuel had been much used for steam locos in Britain and certainly not that early.

im also guessing there must be a wooden floor over them

i should have included an intro, ive been going through the railway mags in our club library for a few months, found various interesting things, if it is about wagons, i'll share it with Compound's thread if it is pre 1900's it goes in the 19th century FB group but there are many other things without a place to post so here is my own place.

This will be some tit-bits of volumes which will of course be bias to my own interests and im sure Railway Magazine and the second hand sellers wont be happy with somebody sharing it all for free so they will mostly be images minus the article text

The ferry at Burntisland was the world's first roll-on/roll-off - the moveable 'linkspan' enabled loading at any tide and was devised by Thomas Bouch (yes, that one).

In later years the FR had a few small tank engines from Sharp Stewart (two types) and one from Andrew Barclay, none of which resemble this one.  I wonder if it's from one of the local private colliery or ironstone railways in for attention?

Particularly interesting in these photos is the narrow gauge (18 inch gauge?) track running round the Cowlairs works, especially the crossing of the SG track in what I asseume to be the locomotive erecting shop.

I've just discovered this thread - some fascinating old pictures there. Many thanks!
I wonder if you have access to the March 1933 edition, which should have an article about British wagons sent overseas in WWI?

I would be interested to see if it has anything relevant to my thread on Polls and Parrots:

Cheers,

Mol

Bottom left hand corner looks like a stretch of canal complete with narrow boats.  I wonder if the container on the crane is for loading or unloading the narrow boats.  Perhaps one of our Midland experts can identify the location.
