Trainlines of Derby

I was troubled to see that a closing down sale has just started? (according to signs in the window - the shop was also closed this weekend???).

This is sad new and it leaves Derby in the Parlous state of not having a model railway shop :(

I was speaking to the owner only just the other day; I often remarked that if you don't use your local model shop you will lose it - maybe this is what has happened.

I shall pop in this week to see what's up... but does anyone have any news (and I mean news not idle speculation) thanks.

He is simply retiring,(to North Wales) tried to find a buyer as a going concern and failed. So he is having to close down, its a helluva commute from Porthmadog to Derby!

Thanks... I hope he manages to realise his assets and he can get round to building that layout he never had time to start... it's still a shame that there wont be a model railway shop in Derby (I simply can't count modelzone - although it does have it's uses)

The demise of the local model shop does not affect me as much as others as there's not much a mainstream model shop stocks that I need, as I'm after components and 'bits'. My bits won't keep them in profit.

However it does affect people starting out - and especially the kids - who will not get the advice and guidance that a 'real' local model shop will bring. It's all very well for us who are able to travel to exhibitions, do have some engineering skills, aren't afraid of asking the stupid question but not OK for the person who wants to take the train set further but doesn't know where or how.

And no, I don't know what we do about it either.

Chris has just dropped me an email with clarification:

Trainlines of Derby shop will be closing around October unless a suitable buyer is found in the meantime. From now until closure there will be a clearance sale in progress with many bargains to be had. Any remaining stock after closure will then only be sold via mail order/ internet ( ie. no shop outlet ). The new address will be advertised in magazine adverts later in the year. This arrangement will continue until all stock has gone. Some show bookings and Toyfair appearances may still take place.

I would like to thank the many customers who have supported my business over the last 16 years, when it all started trading from home at Toyfairs and shows.

I will be moving to North Wales in the next few weeks, so please do telephone before making a special trip, as opening times are subject to change at short notice.

C & B Models on Normanton Road changed owners last year and no longer stocks model railway items.

Phil T.

Derby Model Shop (ex - C&B Models) is advertising in the latest Model Rail as stocking 'OO' Bachmannn & Hornby.

Don't know the extent of the range as I've not been in since it changed hands.

What is the shop listed as please Phil? I can't see any clues in the advertisers index.

I remember the days when there was Syd Sharrocks shop opposite the Bus Station and also a small shop in Reginald Street near the swimming baths.

The site of Syd Sharrocks Shop is now part of The Eagle Market (Part of the Westfield Complex). The Bus station now redeveloped from Art Deco to a concrete mess. The small shop, Sheila Hames, closed in the mid 70's and has been derelict pretty much since and as for the Swimming Baths, now an old folks home!....................... Thats progress for youblink.gif

Is Chris retiring in North Wales?? or does he fancy just semiretiring and opening a trainlines style shop over here in Gwynedd ???

Believe Chris is retiring, and once all stock sold will not be doing any more selling of model railway items.

Don't forget there also used to be Ratcliffe's at The Spot. Shop's still there but can't remember what as so it must be a trendy boutique or coffee bar.

Afternoon Bruce

It's a little ad on page 157 1/2 way down right hand side. Same phone no as C&B - 01332 367506 and website

www.derbymodelshop.co.uk.

Shop closed Wed & Sun. I've not managed a visit since it changed hands, so I don't know what levels of stock they have.

And the shop on Friary Street late 60's early 70's.

Not Friary Street Alan, it was in George Street (opposite the Friary Hotel) and he mainly sold model boat and aircraft stuff IIRC but not railways.

Phil R,

I have now found the ad, will have to check it out some time.

Didn't the Co-op in East Street sell trains on one of the upper floors too? Then there was a stall in the Market Hall which sold old railway mags.

Happy days

Also there used to be a secondhand bookshop on Osmaston Road just up from The Spot on the right hand side which had a good range of railway material too. Doubtless all long gone now.......

Laura's Bookshop, closed probably ten years ago if not more. The sign was still there for quite a few years but it's probably not now.

Don't forget MidiModels was at the Cavendish as well.

I'll tell you what, if two shopkeepers can afford to retire within a year then the hobby isn't doing too badly. Sounds like a good opportunity is there for someone.

Laura's Bookshop, that was it .

Thanks Flood.

Don't ever recall seeing Laura there though. Was always a middle-age chap when I visited.

Yes I know there was a shop in George Street. The shop in Friary Street stocked Arfix kits and model railway accessories (Triang Hornby). They had a small railway display in the front window (oval of track with some scenics). When the shop closed it became a carpet shop. (Spectrum Carpets?)
