I honestly don't think you can lay any blame on others misinterpreting your comments; better to accept that you shouldn't have phrased it that way if it isn't what you meant.

Andy,

clearly I had phrased it badly, which I regret. Sadly we all make a mistake from time to time.

For what its worth, I can see the intent and direction implied even if the wording was rather ambiguous in its interpretation. It applies to my choice of employment also, where I am highly skilled in what I do but those skills are only partially transferrable away from the area of engineering I work in. If for some reason I found myself in the situation where my employers no longer required my services, I'd be up the creek in a burning boat and would have to extensively re-train. Such is the cost of becoming too specialised. Its great while it works, less so when you have to move on.

The Fratton Bargain Shop was one of the earliest I can recall to take large adverts in Railway Modeller offering discounted prices

Guy Norris anyone?

Boring stuff like dolls and dolls houses and such downstairs.  Upstairs a delight of model railways...

Just like Dick Buckley's at Wakefield.

Are those real air rifles in the lefthand window display. or just cap guns?

Probably real ones. You used to see them advertised in the likes of Meccano Magazine and The Boy's Own Paper.

As a lad my nearest Wrenn stockist did guns, fishing tackle and chuffers. All I needed in one shop.😁

Not if this topic is like most others, it will rumble on long after Hattons have shut the doors for the last time.🙂

So you'd go and shoot a cat, drown some maggots and then play trains😄

shoot a cat,

Targets and rats, rabbits and wood pigeons that laid siege to the garden, yes. Country life.

Apart from that, spot on.

Just read the latest Hornby magazine on line (Feb) and it seems strange without the familiar Hattons ad ☹️.

Just like to add, as everyone else has, that as a modeller based in New Zealand for the last 50 years that Hattons have been the go to shop for us antipodeans during all that time.

It’s a unpleasant feeling when something that has been part of your life for so long is suddenly not there anymore.

I am reminded of when Mainly Trains and Eileen’s Emporium both closed.

Crikey, could you imagine if model railway shops sold guns these days?

It'd be like the OK Corral, high noon over Bachmann 37 vs Accurascale 37...

There use to be a shop in Argyle Street in Glasgow that sold mobile DJ equipment, fishing supplies, knives and guns.  Victor Morris it was called.  The owners also ran a lingerie shop next door!

I guess it proves the old saying nothing lasts forever but im suprised they have not sold the name. Theres lots that will remind us of them and its a name written into model rail history,my 66 fleet makes me smile more now, the Hornby Dublo CD with Keith on, it must be hard for remaining family to swallow the loss.

In the 1960s hardware shops or local village store often sold model railway items.

As a mail order customer of Hattons since the mid 1960s I have always had excellent service from them and I am sorry to see them go.

Most of the stock that I browsed through recently had run down before Hattons announced it was closing but not all.

I noticed that Hattons have still got 226 Dapol 0 Gauge 7S-010-015 Class A1X Terrier locomotives in plain black with over 30% off. New £150 (list price £251.51) It reminds me of when they were clearing their Hornby Dublo stock.

Has anyone else noticed large stocks of any other items?

There are currently 423 Skaledale wayside halts available, and 547 Skaledale station offices.

What's likely to be my final purchase from Hattons.

Maybe.

Ordered shortly after Monday's announcement and arrived yesterday without any fuss. It was a reminder of just how easy (too easy) the site is to navigate and what a slick ordering process Hattons provided.

A great service to the end. Sad to see them go.

Perhaps we could start a topic for our last purchases from Hattons.

In my case the last I will receive will probably be my pre order CIE Genesis coaches.

Two days ago I purchased a pre owned Wrenn 2-6-4T in LMS maroon and a Hornby Dublo 0-6-2T repainted in BR green with "British Railways" lettering.

My first Hattons purchase in the 1960s was Hornby Dublo so I felt it fitting that my last purchase would also be Hornby Dublo.

Thank You Hattons.

Suppose it's possible that Hattons could sell on the rights/moulds for their Genesis coaches

As I've said elsewhere (in the Andrew Barclay thread), the toolings and associated CAD files are valuable intellectual property, so it would make good business sense to sell them if there is a willing buyer. They're of no value to a non-trading Hattons, but selling them would be a worthwhile return to shareholders.

Alternatively, given that the retail side appears to have been the main issue (as explained in the local radio interview), another possibility is that the manufacturing side of the company can be sold off as a going concern, possibly as a management buyout, and continue as another niche manufacturer in the same vein as KR Models, Cavalex, etc. I think that would be a positive outcome for that aspect of the business.
