ianwales
Hi all Are there any dealers in 2nd hand railway books in the north east, around the teeside area or a reasonable distance thereof? Ian
burgundy
There was one directly opposite Pickering station, NYMR, when I visited a couple of years ago. Best wishes Eric

Best wishes Eric Still there and his policy of taking everything from a collection, rather than cherry picking, can be attractive, but his buying prices are rock bottom (as to be fair are his selling prices - most railway books £3). Is the OP looking to buy or sell? There was also the shop in Grosmont and I have feeling the original owner, George, stayed in the trade and went somewhere up Cleveland way?

durham light infantry
George Morton https://gmtransportbooks.co.uk/ does model railway shows and swapmeets. Highly reccomended. As are Barters in Alnwick. Quite pricey but an excellent day out and experience in itself. There is also the Lions charity bookshop just inside the Alnwick town gate.

Reference books are there for that purpose, not daily reading!

HighlandRailwayman
I believe that the bookshop in Grosmont has now closed, with https://www.mrslofthouse.co.uk/2022/02/16/about-our-store/ in Scarborough buying up a lot of his stock. (no connection other then as an occasional buyer and seller of books to them!) Got a fair selection in there. As for buying, they do cherry pick stuff they can sell, and are keen for books on diesels or local railway. Hope that helps.

That's possibly the stock from the most recent owner of the Grosmont shop; George, the original owner, is still in business but not in Grosmont, as the link upthread shows. Steamport Southport
Ah. That chap! Always get stuff from him at exhibitions as it's decent quality. Definitely recommended as a buyer. Jason
Wheatley
Another vote for Barter Books. As mentioned it isn't cheap for the good stuff, because he knows what he's got and how much its selling for elsewhere. But as mentioned when I was handing over 50 quid for a copy of Vol 1 of "LMS Carriages", all the online sellers check against each other, as does Oxfam, and the alternative is checking every charity shop you walk past in the hope they don't really know what they're doing or what they've got. And the cafe is excellent :-) Also Nick Tozer in Huddersfield if it's railway books, he does mail order. Edited January 20 by Wheatley
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted January 20 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20 (edited) I get books from World of Books online - including railway titles. They are linked with charity shops and help them move books to where they can be sold to the best advantage. They have a book-buying department. I have never used it but you might find it of use. https://www.ziffit.com/en-gb/about-us Edited January 20 by phil_sutters

Mrs B was looking for a specific specialist cookery book and found it at World of Books for (I think) £18 and was amazed that it had a British Heart Foundation price on for £2.50. She was so cross at the substantial mark-up and said she would rather give a donation to BHF than add to the profits of WoB. She complained, returned the book and got a full refund. .

I believe the prices are computer generated using algorithms. I watch their prices a lot and they fluctuate constantly. So a tip. If you see something you want and reckon it's too expensive, keep looking as it may come right down in price. Got a few like that. Jason 1
