RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 19, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 19, 2022 Why does some fool keep wasting expensive colour film on this decrepit old thing? Whatever next? Well that's not much better, is it? It's the 4.40 FO Doncaster-KX, ten TSOs and two brakes. They will be off to Skegness the following morning, but probably not behind Duke of Rothesay.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 20, 2022 It appears that at least ten of you like filth. As it happens, today's first offering is more of it. Four minute wait over, the A2/1 departed, and shortly afterwards this B1 appeared. The stock reveals that this is a Leicester train, and 61204 a Spital Bridge engine, far more likely to be seen at Leicester Rugby or Northampton than in those places where B1s were normally seen. Spital Bridge did have 61005 Bongo for a while, but sadly it was transferred away before 1958, and to Parkestone, whence an appearance at PN would be most unlikely.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 20, 2022 Still focusing on that B1, first we have a very familiar view. But then we have one that isn't.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 21, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 21, 2022 The 4.19 stopper from KX now arrives, behind a locomotive of considerable historical significance, in the model railway world, that is. Dante was, so far as I am aware, the first ever 00 scale model of an A2/3. Built by Tony Wright over 40 years ago, its original identity was Watling Street, and as such it ran on Stoke Summit for some years. Tony offered it to me when the DJH kit became available, and he built one, or several, and it became Dante, and has been with me for getting on for 20 years. The loco still runs sweetly, but is, hardly surprisingly, not up to the standard of the latest Hornby offering, so I have decided to retire it from service. Before I consign it to E Bay though, I thought I would see if anyone who visits here might be interested. As I said earlier, it really is a model of considerable significance. Paint work needs touching up in a couple of places, but otherwise, as you can see, it is in good order. If anyone is interested, please PM me. It would be good to know that it has gone to a good home and will be cared for and appreciated. 29
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 21, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 21, 2022 Dante soon hustles off out of the way, as a Cambridge local is due. It arrives behind B2 Framlingham. Very nice castle at Framlingham, well worth a visit. I keep meaning to go back again, but never seem to get round to it. Lovely rake of Gresleys behind the tender. We shall have a closer look.

Steve@31a might not be too pleased to read that though, as he built this one from RDEB parts, and tells me it was an "interesting" experience.

It would be good to know that it has gone to a good home and will be cared for and appreciated. It still looks good Gilbert, In fairness, it was originally scratch-built for me by Mike Edge in 1976 (just the loco). Mike is a superb builder, but, all those years ago, it wasn't quite right. I'd made a Wills tender for it (which wasn't right, either), so, a year or two before the DJH A2/3 kit came out (of which I built the first production example, though not the proving model - as I had done with the same firm's A2/2) I 'revisited' WATLING STREET. I fitted a DJH A1 smokebox/boiler/firebox, filling the last mentioned rearwards to fit against the flat-fronted cab, made a new smokebox saddle, fitted Millholme A2/3 smoke deflectors and made a Crownline riveted tender for it. I should have made front steps for it as well. I also repainted it and weathered it, then, as mentioned, sold it to you. I believe John Houlden latterly fitted a more modern motor/gearbox to it for you (it originally had an MW005 motor and Romford gears), making it more DCC-compatible. Though WATLING STREET did run on Stoke Summit, prior to that it ran on Fordley Park and Leighford, featuring in the contemporary model press; so it has quite a provenance. Thank you earlier for asking me if I'd like it, but I'm not sentimental I'm afraid. As things moved on, I built a 'much better' DANTE from a DJH kit, which Ian Rathbone painted for me (far superior to my efforts!)...... She (he?) also ran on Stoke Summit as well......... Ironically, for a short time with 60521 (though I don't have a picture of WATLING STREET on Stoke). Regards, Tony. 29

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 23, 2022 This seems to be a convenient time to show you the complete new Qof S rake, recently completed by Tim. We decided that a ratio of 8 1928 cars to 2 1925 was about right, did our research, and this is what I now have, the full ten cars for the first time. a couple of cut and shuts in there, including one car that still had matchboard sides in 1958, and the whole thing beautifully matched up, and weathered in the places where they should be. That really is Pullman opulence. 37 1 6

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 23, 2022 Pullmans always managed to coincide at PN, both at lunchtime and at around 6pm. Thus the Queen of Scots was almost immediately followed by the down Yorkshire. Sir Nigel has the job, and is seen again emerging from under the roof. The nice lady in the spotted dress seems to be very interested in watching the train, but the attention of the porter is elsewhere. 34

I'm delighted to say that we have the best possible outcome. Dante is going to a good friend who is quite a regular visitor here, and even more so to Little Bytham. He doesn't have his own layout yet, though hopefully that will change shortly, but he does regularly take some of his own locomotives to run on Little Bytham. The result is that Dante will be owned by someone who knows of and will cherish its provenance, and even better, it will return to the home of its original owner regularly, and continue to run on the ECML. So, we have all the links that we possibly could, and a guarantee that it will be well cared for. Excellent. 14

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 25, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 Two A3s with recently fitted double chimneys on view tonight. First we have Tracery on the Catterick Camp leave train. Chimney fitted at a casual repair in July. All other A3s only got them during general overhaul. Some special pleading by KX, I think. Then we have Prince of Wales on its normal duty, the 5.35 Newcastle. Its cminey was fiited at a general, as recently as 29th August, which is why it is still in pristine condition.
