coachmann
School uniforms were expensive and our poor parents were keen that it should be looked after. We got away with discarding it in art school, but those in grammar schools had no choices and it must have stunted their development, I mean, if a 15yr old bird earning in the mill is confronted by a lad in gold-piped school uniform and the other in fleck jacket, crepe soles and DA, it's a no brainer who she chose.... Later on of course the grammar school lad had the last laugh as he drove his limo past ex-Teddy in bus uniform pushing pram and off-spring to wash house....
bigwordsmith
Eeeeeh When I were a lad we all had t'same uniform - hand-me-down britches, raggedy shirt made from Father's cast-off, and bare feet. Youngsters these days don't know they're born!

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 11, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 11, 2015 Another week flies by, golf resumes as the white stuff disappears, and still the layout gets operated regularly- I'm already up to move 100 in the next sequence. So, lets have a few more photos. The 9.15 York -KX was due, the spotters probably hoping for something other than its regular motive power. Doesn't look promising though, does it? I know some of you like these shots from on high, so I decided to try another, and see what happened if I added a sky. Neither one thing or the other now, I think. So the camera returned to rail level, and confirmed that it is indeed the "unnamed streak" as usual. Less usual is the working running in to Platform 6, which is one of the additions to the sequence. This was a Thursday only working to Hunstanton, and clearly an excursion, as it ran only during August. Why only on Thursdays I wonder? Anyway, it gives an opportunity to find a duty for another of my ever increasing stud of B17's. I'm assuming the train would reverse at Kings Lynn to get onto the Hunstanton branch, but even if it didn't, the short tender B17's could be turned when the train reached its destination. Not very keen on this one, but having spent time on shopping it, might as well include it. W1 close up. it certainly was an impressive beast. So we shall have a look at the other side. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur is bringing the stock of the excursion into Platform 6. There isn't much of a crowd waiting on the platform though. This one could have caused me considerable stress and anger, had it not been for the fact that I have resolved not to let silly little things upset me any more. I had got this lined up nicely, and even got the manual focus spot on. Then, just as I pressed the button, the sun went behind a cloud, and ruined it. Predictably, I couldn't get it right at the second,or even third, attempt. Never mind..... Back down the other end. We haven't had this view for a while. I didn't like the sky much though, so I tried this one instead. Which do you prefer? I need to do something about that blank wall at the back. And I don't know why I keep trying these when the sun is so strong. The W1 was followed by Grantham A3 Persimmon, bringing the 8.00am Up Newcastle through non stop. Again I tried contre jour shots, being a glutton for punishment. This was the only one that was worth sharing. Right, must go and run some more trains.
RMweb Gold fishytrains Posted January 11, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2015 I prefer the second of the two sky's. The darker sky seems to set the station off better, the first seems to wash it out more. Just my opinion though. Mike
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted January 11, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 11, 2015 I like the first W1/N5 shot, Gilbert, and not just because my favourite girl is in it! The bridge really looms above the stock, looking really massive. Excellent.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted January 11, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2015 Hi Gilbert That W1 is certainly impressive, but the short tendered B17 does it for me, especially the shot with the DMU in the dock beside it. It certainly must be hard dealing with the sun's fickleness, perhaps some shade curtains and daylight fluoros might help even it out, but then I find it can be hard to get the lighting right to the chassis and underframes as all the light is directly overhead. To be honest though, any photo on PN is a good one I reckon! Cheers Tony

stewartingram
I assume your ThO Hunstanton train is heading north via the M&GN? Bit surprised to see aB17 that way though. But even if it reversed and went via March, it would still have to run into Kings Lynn as that was a terminus. The Hunstanton branch could only be accessed by a reversal. As for ThO, could this be a bit of social history that we have forgotten? Maybe an early closing day for the shops (remember them)? Or a market day excursion maybe? Lovely pics again anyway. I have to take so much out of blue skies to stop them looking far too blue, that the whole thing becomes, as you say, washed out. There must have been sunny days though, even in Peterborough. As you say, the light is right overhead, and produces a horrible effect on roofs in particular. I shall just have to be more pragmatic in what I attempt when the sun is very strong. Light cloud is best really. Even Andy Y hopes for a cloudy day if he is coming to take photographs.

bigwordsmith
Has the body of the first coach behind the B17 decided tp separate from the solebar, or is there some distortion going on from the lens when you magnify the pic?

But I put the loco on the wrong end, didn't I? I had thought about early closing day, but wouldn't a departure before midday be too early for that? My recollection is that the shops were open until lunchtime.
