RMweb Gold Popular Post Colin_McLeod Posted April 23 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 23 (edited) Roy Cross, whose incredible artwork adorned the lids of many, many Airfix model kits, celebrates his 100th birthday today, the 23rd of April. A man whose art was responsible for so many of us parting with our hard earned pocket money as we scoured the model shop for a kit that took our fancy! Happy 100th birthday, and thanks for the brilliant childhood memories Mr. Cross! Edited April 23 by Colin_McLeod typo 21 2 7
Rugd1022
I presume this is one of Roy's - my all time favourite Airfix kit... Did he do them all or were other artists involved?
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted April 23 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 23 (edited) There's a bit more about Roy Cross here for anyone interested. http://roycrossfineart.co.uk http://roycrossfineart.co.uk/airfix-gallery He didn't do all of the Airfix box art, although he was apparently the most prolific. Steamport Southport
Just a pity they sanitised quite a few of them over the years by deleting parts of the artwork. Such as removing things on fire and bombs dropping. Thankfully they've started reissuing them with the full artwork again in the Classics range. Jason There was a period from about 1978 to 1990 when the Roy Cross artwork wasn't used or was in some cases amended but Cross's artwork has featured on the classic kits now in original form for around 30 years (obviously there are many kits issued since which have never had a Cross painting to use). What was also happened in some cases was to overpaint the original artwork to reflect changes to the kit markings - this was quite usual with the airliners
