BoilerSludge
Thank you all so much for the info! I’ll be sure to look out for similar attachments on other LNER locos! 😃
RMweb Premium 31A Posted May 31 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31 Taking it that the OP is referring to the rectangular plate on the top of the boiler between the dome and the safety valves and not the washout plugs, the RCTS Locomotives of the LNER Part 6A says: "The production Diagram 16 boilers differed from the boiler which was fixed in 1945 to No. 3445 in one particular respect. There were 13 rows of ordinary roof stays, instead of 15, and 4 rows of expansion and sling stays instead of only two. To strengthen the firebox wrapper plate immediately in front of the safety valves on these new boilers, a patch plate was provided which required alterations to the clothing plate and a raised cover plate above. Later this raised plate was usually absent."; and it refers to photos in the book which show the presence or absence of the rectangular plate. The same thing occurred with the boilers on the L1s, and Hornby have portrayed both types on that model as well. 3

(Before yesterday/today) Thanks so much clearing that up. 😃🙏
