RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 5, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2010 As the photographer himself asks, why? there's no apparent damage and the underframe suggests it's not a new paint scheme, so what is it? http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=336503&nseq=
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted September 5, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2010 Perhaps a new 'secret' livery? This sort of shrink-wrapping is normally used for winter boat storage for 'gin palace' boats in our local marina...and very expensive it is too! RMweb Gold PhilH Posted September 5, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2010 Consensus of opinion seems to be that it's to test the concept for locos which are to be put into long term storage. Don't think it's a new paint job looking at the fuel tank. This thread is typical of those on this subject.
Andrew Peters
If you read the comments below the picture, it say's it's going into long term storage " Laid Up Bad Order, as of 8-19-10 at 0026. It's a shrink wrap test during long term storage. The unit has been cannibalized for parts, a brake grid, and they plan on harvesting the last 3 good traction motors." Cool picutre though and a different modelling idea

Cool picutre though and a different modelling idea I suppose thats what a downturn in traffic and a bad economy do for you. The SD70MACs are still a fairly modern loco, shame to see them being stored this early on. Remind you of anywhere?

lmsforever
A similar thing was done to the Euro regional coaches intended for Regional Eurostars when they were stored at MOD Bicester before they were sold to VIA for use. Must be to protect the paintwork etc.
woodenhead
Pity DB and Wisconsin before them didn't do this to the class 60s laid up at Toton.
