pauln
Several weeks working away and a holiday has resulted in yet another long period with very little done. I did need a bit of a break though. Over the last weekend I managed to do a bit on the incline area with some of the retaining walls and also some ballasting. After the ballasting I needed to give all the track a good clean with IPA to restore decent electrical connectivity. So far I have managed to get the locos up the incline plus a 4CEP. No chance with the VEP though. I do have a week or so off at xmas so hopefully another blitz will be possible. I'll aim to finish the elevated section by the New Year. Couple of photos. 50035 on the mainline and 47059 approaching down the incline with some container traffic. Same locos from a different angle. The close-up photo shows up my poor efforts at adapting a Scalescenes bridge to use as incline retaining walls (I wanted this kit because it has the refuges along the retaining wall. The ledge is really a bit too narrow hence it not looking very good. Finally the flyover from the incline across the mainline. The MK1 coaches are on a spur for what I think will be a preserved branch (with only the platform a la Eridge and a short section of track modelled)
pauln
A bit of attention back on the main station area. I've started putting together the station building - two Peco kits being combined. Also working away at pavements (Metcalfe) and car park marking (sticky paper). Station building Bus stop with the convenience store in the background (Kingsway Models) Overview of the station area. I need to add some taxi parking spots in front of the station. Oops - didn't notice I'd nudged the station building onto the pavement in the last pic. pauln
Thanks all. The up and over was a bit of a late addition so its rather steep. But a 4 car or a loco and a couple of coaches can just make it (the curve at the same time as a steep climb is too much for some locos!)
pauln
Again, it has been a long time since any updates - real life in the way again. Trying now to finish off two of the corners. Firstly the upper level where the heritage railway track will come out of a tunnel and run into one side of the upper level platform. The second track will just be for derelict / spare stock like a real railway. The coaches are ageing Lima ones; I'll eventually get round to replacing with Bachmann (if only because the couplings don't match other stock). On a second corner we have a small industrial unit. Need to finish the fencing off. And between the two corners is a siding for unloading containers and the like. Just the infill between the rails to do. Not enough room to represent the crane though ... I really must clear up the window sill.
pauln
Did some work on the high level station which is a short branch line platform served on one face by local trains and on the other by a preserved line. With limited space there was no room for a run round so I have been on the lookout for a Hornby Pull Push set so that the train can work in either direction with the loco remaining at one end. Finally found one at TheModeller.com and - as a bonus - at a bargain price in their sale (all gone now). I decided to try scratchbuilding the platforms from card and Scalescenes brick paper. The platform will probably be covered in Metcalf paving just to make a contrast with the "asphalt" effect on the main platforms. A class 150 and Hornby M7 / Pull Push meet in the part complete platform. M7 coming off the preserved line across the crossover and heading into the platform. I should get the tripod out and do some decent shots rather than the take a chance 800 ISO you see here.
Ralph
a lot going on in compact layout, like the look of the layout.

pauln
Can I ask you about the brown ballast you are using? Thanks for now, Mark Hi Mark, Sorry for the delay in replying. It is mostly Woodland Scenics Medium Brown B78 except for some of the ballast in the main station area. Paul
Mark 37
Thank you for the information. I'll just go and put that information to good use and order a bag or two as I think this could suit my purpose. Thank you again, Mark
pauln
Long overdue are some decent shots using a tripod and thus gaining a reasonable depth of field. Close-ups do, however, tend to show up every defect and bit of dust (in my case rather a lot of both). Road scene. Still have the baseboard edges to finish An overview of the main Woodmere Station area A close-up of the Bachmann 4 CEP, Horny 4 VEP (which rarely ventures onto the running lines ! and an HST fitted with Olivia's sound. Woodmere EMU sidings. Little bit more detailing to do here. Woodmere bus garage (Kingsway kit of Sutton Bus Garage - my local. Popped down there to take some photos of each entrance and added them as background)
pauln
And a few more .... Loco depot (Bachmann) and Hornby 50 035. Loco depot headshunt and fueling point Hornby M7 heading off the preserved branch to the joint preserved / BR station (no name as yet) M7 handing over passengers to a Bachmann Class 150. Still lots of work to do on the station platforms. Main station forecourt. Convenience store, bus stop and car park. General view showing the intermodal siding, branch line to hidden sidings and incline up to the preserved line

pauln
Finally finished the platform for the "country" station. And the push pull tries it for size. In the end I decided to go for a completely scratch built approach. Card for the base and strengthening with the walls in Scalescenes brick paper, card covered in grey card for the platform with white lining using white sticky back paper. I'm reasonably pleased with it. Certainly the white paper approach to the platform white lining is neater than I could have drawn on. Also made a start on the building for the EMU siding / track maintenance yard. I need some of the barriers made of scrap rail around the edge (any suggestions for a cheapish source of this ?). That British Rail van must be fresh out of the museum :-)
pauln
A few updates. Hopefully during the christmas break I will finally get the last points wired up and complete most of the basic scenic work. The small station is now gradually edging towards completion. I had a go at some scratch build fencing since the kit built stuff is expensive for long sections. I took some mesh from my wife's fabric box sprayed it silver and used some plastic rodding sprayed concrete colour for the posts. I think the posts are probably too wide for scale size but that's all I had to hand. I think it looks ok even on a photo (which normally shows up any deficiency). Also made a start on some houses to fill in the last bare section of the baseboard. Thought I'd try a wall between railway and houses rather than more fencing - wall still need the edging added to the top. And finally made some progress on the main station building. Needs some more paint and filling the hole in the brickwork that is rather more obvious in a photo ! Also glazing and posters still to do.
pauln
Almost filled in the last big scenic gap on the layout. From this .... to this (with 47 535 University of Leicester passing by) I'm pleased with my scratch built fences though I have some thinner Evergreen strip for the next batch. I haven't decided what this area will be yet. For now it is a turning circle for buses but maybe an industrial unit in the future with a bit of weathering. pauln
Finished (well nearly) the last scenic section. Just the detailing to do now. Also took a few pics on the tripod so hopefully slightly better focusing and depth of field. A street level view with 47715 (Bachmann) passing by at the end of the terrace. An alternative use for the compound to the side of the upper station ..... not really much room to turn an artic One of these two models is well out of their area. In fact both are well out of the area I originally chose to set the layout in. Artistic licence (or limited rolling stock). Hopefully shows off the fencing better. My daughter has insisted on having a park on the layout so here's a small park / rec ground. The brown area is supposed to represent wood chippings as found in all the safest children's play areas these days and will soon be joined by a swing, see saw and other activities (hopefully delivered by postie tomorrow). A rear view of the houses. Obviously they have all just had their turf relaid . The rear walls are supposed to back straight onto the houses but that looked a bit grim so I decided to do a bit of re-engineering and give them all gardens too. A bit of rough ground at the other side of the terraced street has been commandeered by BR for some track access. The first van has arrived early to get the tea brewing. The refuelling area and headhunt are finally a bit more secure with the addition of fencing. In the plc this looks very wonky but on site it looks ok (I think)
Ralph
like the end of terrace scene, nice additions to the layout.
pauln
Now that most of the main scenic work is complete my thoughts turned to rolling stock. The main activity for the last two weeks has been a clear out of stock I have gathered over many years (long before I had a layout) and no longer need. In fact rather than "no longer need" I'm not sure I ever needed some of it. Around 20 Lima MK1 coaches in green, maroon and BR blue/grey have passed through Ebay. Also sold several locos including a Hornby 31, some older 8 pin socket Bachmann 37s as well as several Heljan 47s that have been replaced by newer Bachmann models. A batch of wagons and goods vehicles is waiting in a box to follow. As well as creating more space and a bit of spare cash the reduction in locos has meant I now have some spare sound chips; enough to fit my entire fleet and even found a chip I didn't know I had. Three sound chips have just gone off to Legomanbiffo for a re-blow. Loco wise I'm down to 3 x Bachmann 47, 2 x Bachmann 37 and 6 Hornby 50s in various liveries and of course an HST. The EMU/DMU fleet is not yet fully sound equipped and probably won't ever be. The Bachmann 150 is sound chipped and one of the other chips will come back from Legomanbiffo with Class 416/2 EPB sounds. I have justified this because it is such a lovely model (and there's no sign of the sound fitted Network Southeast Thumper from Kernow). I can't justify this expenditure for my 4 CEP fleet given the range of sounds is very limited. I am not a dab hand with weathering so this far I have left each model as it comes out of the box. Coaching stock wise I have a rake of the new Bachmann Mk2a to go with the class 50s, a Mainline rake of Mk1s which I figure are good enough compared to the current Bachmann ones, a Hornby rake of MK3s to go with the HST and an ageing rake of Lima NSE Mk2s - The colouring on these is way different from the locos so I think these will go shortly in anticipation of an updated Bachmann release.
