Raining here. We also have a yellow wind warning this morning. I haven’t seen any trampolines flying by yet.

There will be more  stuff removed from the garage today.

Once again I’ve struggled to get on the rmweb this morning. I logged on ok and was able to read and rate posts, but when it came to adding a post of my own, it kept timing out and I got a host error message.

Now, back to proper posts. 

 

Last night we went to bed early as we’d both been kept awake by of the night before strong winds. Although it didn’t take me long to go to sleep, I didn’t sleep for long, as for some strange reason I awoke at 3:30 needing a toilet break, something I never need to do, unless I’m ill, I don’t feel ill! We were then woken once again at 6:30 by strong winds and heavy rain! It’s currently sunny, but still very windy. Sheila was initially having second thoughts about going to her Zumba class, as she didn’t fancy getting soaked before she even got there, I offered her a lift, but she declined the offer. She’s just left, so I will now continue to remove the distemper from the cellar walls.

 

Due to the disruption to the train service I encountered during my trip to the Warley show, I don’t think I’ll get away with it for the Ally Pally Show, so I won’t be there either.

Morning all.

A heavy week so far:

The wife is coming to the end of the first week in a two week wait after having IVF (actually ICSI).

The conference at my church has finished so I just have to tidy up the photos and send those off, which I'll hopefuilly be able to do this afternoon.

Up for work at 6am this morning - only two days left until a day off!

Oh, and the cat was sick in the bedroom at 5:30am this morning :/ which means I was stupidly early leaving.  Picked up petrol though - cool beans!

I had trouble reacting to posts earlier and also got a host error message at which stage the site went down altogether but all seems OK now albeit a little slow. The fence repair is under way despite it being windy and I'm in the middle of this morning's job, which is cleaning out the bird boxes ready for this year's tit population. Then there is brunch and maybe, just maybe, some workshop time before round two of my root canal treatment this afternoon - yuk! Dinner tonight will be corned beef hash as it doesn't need chewing.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. Not raining at the moment but very overcast and windy. I won't be going to Alley Pally, I had hoped to go but I didn't fancy the journey either by car or public transport. I hope GDB has put some of his win aside for plasters and bandages.

Morning all,

 

For the avoidance of any doubt having visited the Basingstoke show last weekend and aiming for Ally Pally on the 23rd I shall not be going to the Abingdon show this Saturday in order to  keep a semblance of a brownie point in the bank.  Perhaps somebody would care to suggest a meeting time for association with the palms in their court?

 

On today's front we have the wind and rain showers on the weather front, which will make my walk to the surgery to see the Good Count's daughter more 'amusing' than it might otherwise be.  But the best news is on the catering front where my return from the surgery will be greeted by a bowl, or two, of homemade leek soup which is currently developing nicely in the kitchen.  

 

The sad news alas came in a 'phone call yesterday evening when I got something of a shock to learn of the death of a former work colleague, we'd had no prior information about any serious illness although he'd been receiving treatment for various minor things when I last saw him in December so various plans have been put on hold pending information about the funeral.  Amazing how time goes by as I realise it was 25 years ago this year that I recruited him back into a job working for me (for the second time) after he'd taken redundancy and early retirement at the time of sectorisation.  But he was well into his 80s so  hadn't had a bad innings I suppose and no doubt we'll be seeing him off with many good stories about his past achievements although a lot of them seemed to involve rationalising things such as the Vale of Neath/Taff Vale extension freights services when that route was closed or putting extra work into Gloucester Yard when Severn Tunnel Junction Yard was closed (although I was subsequently sent to Gloucester to sort out the night turn working in the yard - we always had a good joke over that one).  Sorry to go on but his death came as a real shock but there'll be some good stories flowing at the wake which is how I'm sure he'd wish to be remembered.

It was great as we would go out for beers (normally leaving someone in the hall whilst we were out) and bring back food. If we woke up early then we just worked on the layout. I too have been known to sleep overnight at an exhibition, but I can't say it was a great nights sleep as the metal light surrounds and high ceiling kept squeaking as they expanded/contracted due to the change in temperature. It's just as well really as I'm a pretty heavy sleeper; thus my effectiveness at being an added level of security would normally not be as high as it should be! I remember when we used to go on camping holidays in a trailer tent in Wool, and upon waking up one morning wondered why the field was incredibly wet. Turns out there was a huge loud thunderstorm overnight, not that I heard any of it; and that's in a canvas tent!

 

 

Today I think it's yet another drive up to my grandparents to continue clearing out as much as possible. Yesterday, my mum and I made good progress clearing out the entire kitchen; with no kids to distract us, it was much easier to get stuff done! You really have to be pretty ruthless, which can be tough; but the quicker you chuck stuff out, the less you dwell on it. We had no problem however of clearing out a rusty unopened baked bean can, and various other tins of food from about 4 years ago. Due to my grandads' dementia, it's very amusing what we unearth in the most unexpected of places!

 

I also found out he had a fair few cameras lying around. Two of which I was able to charge up and take the photos off of last night, which was a welcome surprise. Blankets have been donated to animal charities, and any good clothes have gone to retirement homes in the local area; so it's good to know people will have use of stuff that would otherwise have been thrown out! 

 

And yes, it certainly is bloomin' windy at the moment; my little underpowered car will feel every single bit of wind I'd imagine. Still, could be worse; could be driving a 32 ton high-sided lorry to Wales as a friend of mine is!

I used to work at Bacton Gas works where Sour gas (H2S hydrogen sulphide) comes ashore in the natural gas, at 500 parts in a million it's bye bye world.. The level in the sour gas is much higher.

If you see yellow wind, respirator on.. leave  R A  P   I    D     L      Y...................

 

oh they've just got the chinese system online, 40 minutes to go today, the cal if it works first time, takes 14 ish hours runtime I don't think that will fit in between 07:00 and 15:00 tomorrow...

I better get moving. Con-call with my tax guy coming up. I wonder what the big surprise will be this year? Mind you, considering some of the shenanigans being played by the "high heid yins" here it's far from clear that honesty is the best policy.

I am fairly certain I have finally sorted out my tax status. It seemed to take ages and I am easily confused as to which year is which. 

However we have been on a paper trail. Aditi responded to her bank and was quite happy to invest what was basically her pension lump sum in something better than it was already. However they needed to know about our total wealth and where it came from.   So we have been tracking down letters from solicitors for statements from parents and aunties who left us money. I did have a “don’t bother we’ll just spend it “ grump last night but only to myself. 

When the money went into my bank they didn't ask for proof that it wasn’t Ill-gotten gains, but I suppose coming from solicitors or other respectable institutions they were happy.

I've found one thing that helps. I've reduced the number of days history from 30 days (the default) to 7 days. It has speeded up  things quite a bit.

Phew! No tax surprises this year. The tax guy is not cheap, but it's a small price to pay for keeping me from going completely bonkers.

 

Next year will be a bit more complicated. Because of my age I have to start cashing-in a percentage of my tax-deferred retirement savings, and that will be treated as taxable income.

Trivia question...

What happens when 18 inches of standing snow are rained on with temperatures above freezing?

 

The window wells for egress windows in basements fill with the rapidly increasing runoff, shatter the window and turn the basement into 6 inches of standing water/swimming pool/koi pond <-- take your pick!  

Our "move-in-ready" home that should be renter occupied until the end of April now comes with its own swimming pool.

Being remediated as we speak though I've been over there with limited resources since last night until less than an hour ago, at which point it was just some minor leaking, and all of today after it because serious.

Finally managed to get someone out, the entire area has major flooding including several close neighbors, and there are hardly any services available that have spare equipment and personnel to do the work - we were actually "lucky" finding the folks we did.

As he was assessing the damage and what equipment he needed to go get with his crew he turned down two other calls as his entire business is now at maximum capacity <phew>

Been shoveling heavy wet snow away from the foundation areas 10+ feet (back breaking work!), hauling 60lb tube-bags of sand and stomping about in 6 inches of water inside and 4 inches of slush even where we've shoveled it back outside...

 

+6 light rain off and on, and I'm beat!

It's working for now I wonder how long it will be before they total it. 

Not done much today her went out for most of it so it was peaceful I got on with the next worst job with model railways the worst being ballasting this one is putting on literary hundreds of pressfix transfers it's normally 40-50 per wagon or coach yes all my rolling stock gets attacked with detailing items some have repaints many more just get renumbered.

I should have cooked a Stir Fry tonight but she got back late and I fell asleep on the sofa where is my diner Her said In the fridge dear I got p!ssed off waiting for you, when will it be ready Her says tomorrow dear I'm not starting it now if you can be bothered to pick up your texts I asked you to pick fish & chips on the way in an hour ago, the silence is golden it stopped Her dead in Her tracks.
