RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 (edited) Pi day? 14/3/2023🙂 A lot of us in East Anglia have visited a private school. All 75 acres of it. Despite is very old look the school dates from 1897 and 1902 on this site. Every summer used to be a model Railway show at the premises which was very good. Sadly it is no more as it got too much work for the club to run. Inside in the bits we had access to, it was just another school.. Cheaper end of the market.. £9300 to £11500 per annum depending on year.. Not as cheap as my school, and yes I was a boarder.. it was a council owned and run boarding house for boys, the girls one was some distance away. You then attended one of the three Inverness local schools. Cost to parents £0.. it was for children from across the Highlands and islands, who lived too far from secondary schools or lived too far from a secondary school that did O and Higher grade exams. We generally referred to it as a prison.. even the windows were nailed so the windows wouldn't open more than a couple of inches so you couldn't escape.. you were only allowed out for 3 hours on a Friday, 3 hours + 3 hours on a Saturday, 3 hours on a Sunday. food.. crap.. as it was the same catering as normal school meals... RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 I had the experience of attending a public (aka private) school paid for by the ratepayers of the West Riding. In canny Yorkshire fashion they had done deals with several such establishments in the rural vastness of the North Western areas of the county. The deal they got with bulk buying saved them having to provide rural grammar schools. All victims had to do was pass their Eleven Plus. I was told that in 1963 the cost was £300 per year. As I've said before I have a love hate relationship with the place. Inhabited by bullies and snobs but several inspiring teachers who gave me an education that I'm grateful for. Anyway here in the sunny Charente, various jobs got done yesterday and in the afternoon I started clearing out Cluckingham Palace in readiness for new residents in June. Chardonnay and her three friends were killed last year by a stonemartin. Defences are being increased. Today though I'm off to Ruffec. Firstly to but a new strimmer, secondly to visit my trainspotting mate who has had a kneee replacement and most importantly to do some trainspotting. RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Good morning everyone Well, the overnight rain has stopped, so at least we won’t get wet going to and from the car. My first task this morning is to drop Sheila off at the church hall for her Zumba class. I’ll then stop off at the pharmacy and collect my prescription, then I’ll call at pick up the latest edition of RM, before retuning and loading the car with stuff for the tip. Once that lots been disposed off, I’ll call at the big orange DIY shed for some more glue, before returning home again. The plan then is to attach the final bits of skirting board and hopefully trim and fit the window blinds and all before dinner too! Anyway, better getamoveonthen, back later. RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Mooring Awl, 5 and a bit hours solid sleep helped by pink pills, long awake followed by 1/2 and 1 hours sleeps. Ben the happy Collie found something to chase in the garden, I didn't see it but suspect it was a rat. Time for me to head out to the museum for the lectures.
RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Good morning. Welcome to Chicken Day. Chicken Day? Because it is absolutely fowl outside. Wet, windy, gloomy, Uncle Tom Cobbley and awl. This coincides with Pi Day which gives rise to a conflict. Because, as we were all taught, Pie are Squared but mostly when you go looking for the pie are round. The only square pie we came across in Pieland Australia hailed from the Warrnambool Bakery. All others were round. I haven’t gone in search of square ones here but they don’t leap out at me from supermarket shelves or butcher’s windows screaming “Here we are - the pastry-clad proof of the pudding that mathematicians have been right all along” I’ll stick to Chicken Day. And with that tangent to the Pie theme I’ll sine off and log out. 19

RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Ever since my health problem three weeks ago things have improved enormously. In fact they are far better than than before with few if any night time dashes to the loo and no urgent dashes to the loo at other times. I'll report that to the doctor when we revue the results of the scan.

God Forbid that the NGOs and governments of “Developed Countries” actually listened to and heeded what poorer countries say they want and need. It could cause the entire “aid industry” to collapse. And then what would the makers of expensive SUVs do? How would the airlines fill the First Class cabins? Not to mention what would happen to livelihoods of local “fixers” who provide poorly paid local staff to NGOs etc at exorbitant prices? And to rub salt in the wound - if this were to happen, those poor Ivy League/Oxbridge educated “leaders” of NGOs and governments would have nobody to condescend to or talk down to… Or am I being a teeny-tiny bit cynical here? 6 8
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted March 14 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 14 A better sleep last night, only I brief awakening courtesy of my bladder. This morning is once again dull and wet, a light breeze from the south west and cool, but should get warmer later. My thermometer tells me it is 8°C, the Met Officesays it is 11°C. I rarely believe the Met Office, they are often wrong round here as we get very local weather at times. The evening passed pleasantly watching a fim (Annie Get Your Gun) and then trying to do an old Daily Telegraph crossword puzzle. I find it depends a lot on who set them as to how dooable (sic) they are. After a while you get used to the different styles of each compiler. Today looks like quiet yet again with the usual mix of modelmaking, reading and so on unless the rain clears up. David 5 1

RMweb Premium southern42 Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 14 (edited) ' morning all from red dragon land. Dry for a couple of hours then more of the wet stuff. The odd glimpse of the yellow ball out there. Temp. in double figures 10.3C but breezy out so I doubt it will feel it. Psyching myself up for a toot on the flute - in other words, it is time to let Henry loose and do a few hobbies jobbies before I start. Take care. Be good. You can do it. RMweb Premium Popular Post The White Rabbit Posted March 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Morning all, Very grey here but not much other weather. Perhaps a slothful day? On the subject of pies (and pasties and 'stews with lids'), mine tend to be rectangular. Mainly due to laziness or practicality - most of my baking containers are rectangular. I have a couple of ramekins and a muffin tray but these are rather small for pies. I could do pasties as semicircles but find it's a bit fiddly with cutting the shapes out and then re-rolling the spare pastry into a new sheet. I know, I know, not much of an excuse but it's simpler to use rectangles, which form square pasties. Likewise, my scones are very often square(ish!). With a few weird shapes reminiscent of modern art! They are the ones which tend to get scoffed straight from the oven and the square/round ones kept for public viewing/consumption. Some strange dreams last night, for once I remembered them. It wasn't worth it! Time to go and try to do something useful... TTFN. 3 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post PupCam Posted March 14 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 14 Morning All First, belated birthday and anniversary greeting to @New Haven Neil. It was a busy day yesterday with about a 6 hour stretch working on the pergola which is a very long stretch indeed for Puppers these days. I even missed my lunch! However, I'm happy to report that after some extensive Wysteria weaving the main part of the pergola is complete and doing its job. I've just got the extension on one side to do now which is one horizontal and one vertical. Still, that can wait for another day. Did I mention that a mate welded up a hole in one of the RD's silencers, I can't remember? Anyway having received back just before our trip away last week I thought I'd have a go at painting it with heat resistant black paint. I'd already wire-brushed all of the remaining black paint off (tougher job than I'd imagined it would be), roughed it up a bit with some coarse Emery cloth and it was dry and calm in the back garden. Until I'd got the Workmate out 🙄 My friend had recommended using Simoniz Very High Temperature paint available in a rattle can. He suggested warming the pipe up with a blow torch before painting so I did this particularly as the ambient temp was a bit on the low side. The paint seemed to go on well and it's looking quite reasonable. It's got to cure for 10+ hours so I'll leave it a day or two and then bolt it back on the bike and I can then go and make some more blue smoke. Then I suppose I ought to remove the other one and re-paint that just to balance it up. Whilst I was thinking about (and moving) motorcycles I thought I would start the AJ and the Beeza and get the oil lurking in their sumps back into their oil tanks, that's the trouble with old bikes. The AJ was a bit reluctant as the sump was quite full as its not run for several weeks but we got there in the end. I also noted that the battery is dead so it will need a replacement. The Beeza started second go using my newly devised "Put it in 4th and wind it backwards up to compression using the back wheel" aka the "Grubby Hand" method. This is only necessary because it doesn't have a decompressor fitted and the kick start gearing makes it very difficult indeed to turn it over with the starter and stop just the other side of top dead centre. The GH method saves Puppers from being worn to a frazzle trying to start it conventionally 😀 Right, I'm told we're off to the garden centre. Wish the wallet luck!
