Looking good Guy, well done. Is that a MK1 Escort ?

Cheers Leon. I'll be questioning you soon about how you achieved your ground cover and Loco weathering!!

Yeah it is a MK1 RS2000, I used to have one the same colour but without the Group 4 bubble arches.

Your concrete pad looks very neat saying you used filler. How did you mask the inside of the rails?

Dave

Hi Dave, I didn't mask the rails. This is the order I did things

1: Attached droppers on all the roads (I'm DCC)

2: Marked out the area with 4mm board (about same height as code 100 rail) to form shuttering

3: Masked off the pits

4: Mixed the filler and put in a dollop of PVA to a wettish consistency (To wet to fill a gap in a wall but stilled formed peaks)

5: Spread the filler out and smooth it off with a wide spreader using the 4mm shuttering and rail tops as guides.

6: When the filler had hardened to be "cheese slice like state " ( you could easily prod a dent in it but it was basically set) I ran a old Lima coach bogie up and down each road to form grooves then using a pointy scalpel blade I ran it down the groove against the rail and the nearly set filler just spiralled out.

7: I then got a straight edge and went down the perimeter of the "concrete pad" to neaten things up. I also picked stray bits out of the sleepers and rails at the same time.

8: Leave to fully harden!!

Cheers

Put a bit of paint on the hard-standing

While I'm pleased with my initial attempt I know its far too grey, but for a moment I was splashing paint about like some master artist. How can I lighten it up and make it more green/beige ? Or should I start over?

Can you guess what I'm going to build next?

Hi Guy,

What is the blue(ish) structure on the left end made from?

Step1 cut 2 holes in the WRONG place.

Sadly I am an expert at that!

Hi Dave

its Wills SSMP229 - OO Scale cladding. I bought it because it was the closest stuff I could find to the cladding on Cambois depot which I'm hoping to do when my skills develop. Have a look at Watersmill yard (I think it the same stuff) for a better look at it http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/16510-watersmill-yard/

Cheers for the comment Matt. I'm a big fan of Hallenby its been great to see it develop.

It looks great to me and I'm sure I've seen concrete that sort of colour, but perhaps some subtle weathering coats could be used to adjust the colour without losing the effect you've already achieved. Check some photo references before you alter it so you know precisely what you're aiming for.

Is it a voltage smoother?

Pete

Hi Pete. No its going to be a homemade CDU. Although they are not expensive new, I need the soldering practice!!

Cheers Simon. I think I'm going to run with your idea of placing the refueling point in the middle of the loop. I've had a play and I think it will work.

  • 1 month later...

Right then. Not much done due to having a great family Christmas and it been to cold in the loft!

All I have been doing modelling wise is buying stuff off eBay (found out how to link my credit card with pay pal....goodbye money hello 37501, 37502, 31130, TPO etc etc) and reading how well other people are getting on with their layouts on RMweb.

Anywho, I was a bit hacked of with the colour of the concrete pad and it had been putting me off cracking on. But, I popped up to the loft today and started to rectify it. Then I attempted my first ever weathering, on a mgr and started to dig out the holes for the point motors.

Here's the pics.

My first ever attempt at weathering. Its a bit light but its a start

Hi Guy - the basic HAA can be improved upon quite easily by changing the coupling and wheels. On mine I drilled out the metal rivet and replaced the old Hornby coupling with some Bachmann ones. The hole in the Bachmann coupling was widened slightly and some tubular plasticard was used to add strength to the join. The old Hornby wheels were replaced with the new ones (but they keep derailing - tyre width too narrow?) so they have just been replaced with Bachmann ones. Now, although the wheel size is smaller than prototype - the buffers are perfectly aligned with the loco's ?!?. If you need any further photo's etc, just let me know.

Cheers Melly

Very nice work there Melly, something for me to aim at. I still look back at your excellent Thornaby 47's, 37's and 20's on the old RMweb.

Cheers

LOL Fear not they will return :P . House move in May, having the loft converted in April before we move in, 15X14 ft of space all to myself :D . Plans are being drawn up now and I hope to start the build soon. 47319 Norsk Hydro just finished and 47477 (BR Blue) and Large logo 47424 & 443 to follow (trans-pennine loco's).

best wishes

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, not a lot done considering the time that has past

I have installed 8 point motors and 20 or so DCC droppers

5445445313_d9098799fa_z.jpg

And glued the track down.

5439453319_7bf9a3d3b8_z.jpg

Next I am going to spray the track (Railmatch sleeper grime in a tin), Ballast and attach the droppers to the (not fitted yet) DCC bus.

After that I'm gonna have to decide upon and make a control panel for the points (never done that so any advice welcome).

Then its scenery and play time :D  :D

Cheers

Guy

and then you need to decide what to drink first .... coke, guiness or bacardi !!

Making good progress there. Good luck with the control panel. I am just building my first panel and have just about got my head around it now. It's really not as bad as it first appears. Although I am no expert, please feel free to give me a shout if I can offer an advice to help you along. I am going to post a few photos later on my layout topic, so maybe drop by for a look.
