ianwales
Hi all Is there a list anywhere of the locos that have worked the mainline in preservation and when? The ones I am interested in mainly are the locos I could have on a 1980's Layout such as Evening Star etc. Ian
malcolmy
Hi Ian, I'm not sure of specific information, but from the books I have: Severn Valley Railway Stock Book - visiting engines: Leander 1982 Clun Castle 1982, 1985 Evening Star 1983 Sir Lamiel 1983 City of Truro 1984-1986 (restored at Bridgnorth for 1985 GWR 150) Drysllwyn Castle 1984, 1986 Burton Agnes Hall 1986 Kolhapur 1986, 1988 SDJR 13809 1987 Defiant 1988 So by definition these locos were working (and potentially Main Line certified around that time) Great Western Revival: (photos of Mainline trains) Drysllwyn Castle 1980, 1983, 1984 King George V 1980, 1983 Hagley Hall 1983 London Midland Revival: (photos of Mainline trains) Kolhapur 1986 4767 (Black 5 LMS Livery) 1981 5407 (Black 5 LMS Livery) 1981, 1982, 1984 Princess Elizabeth 1980, 1981, 1986 44767 (Black 5 BR Livery) 1984, 1985, 1986 5305 (Black 5 LMS Livery) 1983, 1985, 1986 Leander 1982, 1983 Duchess of Hamilton 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985 13809 1980, 1983 44932 (Black 5 BR Livery) 1986 673 & 4027 (returning from Rocket 150) 1980 1000 (Midland Compound) 1981, 1983 46443 1985 Hope that helps? James
Platform 5 books used to include a list of steam locos registered for mainline use, so they may be of help if they go back far enough - mine go back to 1990 and I was too young to buy them before that! Otherwise look at contemporary magazines and see what was operating.
RMweb Gold LH&JC Posted November 25, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 25, 2010 To add some quality northern locos to the thread I'm just about certain that the Peppercorn K1 was running on the main lines in the 80's, however it was in LNER livery (not accurate for her as she was built by BR, but it looked very good!) and numbered 2005. malcolmy
I've found another book with Mainline photos... Steam All The Way: Sir Nigel Gresley 1980, 1984 Kolhapur 1985, 1986 City of Wells 1985, 1986 Drysllwyn Castle 1985 Hagley Hall 1985 Clun Castle 1985 Sir Lamiel 1984, 1987 Lord Nelson 1984 King George V 1985 Morayshire 1981 Flying Scotsman 1984 Mallard 1986 Union of South Africa 1984 Princess Elizabeth 1986 Duchess of Hamilton 1982 Clan Line 1985, 1986 5305 1986 44767 1986 Green Arrow 1986 13809 1984 So plenty to go at! and all available ready-to-run (in OO) I think
Bomag
Try http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/ It has probably the most comprehensive (but not perfect) list of all railtours and includes locos, stock and timinigs where available.
Ed-farms
NBR J36 0-6-0 Maude worked a few trains on the West Highland line in 1984.
Chris M
From the 1989 Platform 5 book. As the book was published in 1989 the main line ticket was probably good in 1988. City of Truro Earl Bathurst Defiant (castle class) G*W Clun Castle King George V Burton Agnes Hall Sir Lamiel Lord Nelson Taw Valley City of Wells Clan Line 43106 44871 44932 45305 probably LMS livery 45407 LMS black Kolhapur LMS Lake Bahamas BR Green Princess Elizabeth 48151 BR late logo 53809 1054 - LNWR coal tank (I always expect this to be a Western when I see it advertised) Sir Nigel Gresley Union of South Africa Mallard Blue 4472 673 Maude Green Arrow LNER green The Great Marquess 2005 LNER 75069 80080 Evening Star Sorry its ten years too late! Chris M
Duchess of Hamilton wasn't shown as having a mainline ticket in the book. 46229 was on mainline service from 1980 to 1985 and then again from 1989 to 1996 . This fits with the book being put together in 1988.
Ed-farms
Although just inside the 1980's decade most (if not all) of the engines that went to Rainhill in 1980 would have gone on the mainline so that will add a few, but mostly on light engine moves
Ravenser
Does anyone have dates for Hardwicke's main line running? I remember it as late 70s into very early 80s
Marshall5
Hardwicke was certainly back on the mainline by May 1976 when it did a series of shuttles between Carnforth and Grange-over-Sands as shown below, I last saw it on the mainline just after Rocket 150 (1980) when it went to Dinting and then back to Liverpool Rd. Manchester. Ray.

Definitely both the K1 and 44767 in the early 1980s. My wife and I worked together on NELPG specials as stewards and that has to be between 1981 (the year we got together) and 1986 when we moved out of the N East. For the same reason I can confirm Leander ran in that same time period. Not listed was the 9F that ran on the Southern Region (Black Prince?), late 80's the M7 was also at the Salisbury 150 Gala events. Was the green Black 5 one of those listed above, that was running about then too. When was the S15 Greene King running mainline? Marshall5
'A Decade of B.R. Steam Running 1971-1981' by L.A.Nixon pub. Ian Allan shows many of the locos mentioned above at work on the mainline. Ray.
Butler Henderson
A flick through copies of Janes Railway Year as issued 1981-1986 gives 13809 and 34092 being new on the mainline in 1981, 777 and 7812 in 1982, probably 80079 in 1983, 1054 runs though Manchester Victoria and the return of 35028 in 1984, 4771 and 46443 in 1985 while 44027 had a mainline claim at Coalville Open Day and 3440 (maybe late 1985) 4468 and 44932 (in black not green) in 1986. Active in the early 80s were also 4930, 5051, 6000, 7029; 850; 1000, 43106,(4)4767, 5000, 5025, 5305, 5407, 5690, 6201, 46229; 246, 673, 2005, 4472, 4498, 4771, 60009; 92220 The follow up publication during the remainder of the 1980s was Platform 5s Todays Railways Review of the Year. 6000s boiler cert ran out in 1986 Active locos during the later 1980s included 34027 (from 1989), 34092, 35028, 5080 (from 1988), 6998 (from 1989) 7029, 7819, 5305, 5593, 6201, 44932, 45596 (from 1989) 46443, 48151, 53809, 2005, 3442 (from 1989), 4468, 4472, 4771, 80080. RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted December 30, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) Add to this list.. (some marginally off BR). 1450 [Marlow/Dawlish], Nunlow [Dinting junctions], 7298 [Rainhill moves, Port Sunlight Padiham], 4566 [Port Sunlight], 3717, 925 [Rainhill], 70000, 46203, 6960,6998,2857 [Midnight Freight 1985], 5900,7819,75069, 1000, 9466 (1985). 46443, 53809 (coalville and others), 92203/75029 (Yeomans, Westbury)... Lion, Rocket.. 48151 and 8233, 34072 Folkestone, 30072 Woking, 80080 in the list. Although I didnt see it myself, I understand J94 WD 193 did some manoeuvres. Bold colliery J94 put in a Rainhill appearance. Several industrial sites still had steam in sidings next to BR.. I remember Agecroft Collierys 0-4-0s, and Recall seeing a pair of 20s with a pair of Bickershaw J94s. There was a blue steam shunter at a power station into the mid1980’s at a midlands coal field (Castle Donnington ?) iirc. deviating to diesels for a second.. Whilst preserved diesels were banned, some did some work in an exception on the mainline.. D5209 rescued a failed 5593 at Keighley, D5394 was used for snow clearing, and some special services from Aviemore onto Speyside Railway, 40145 rescued a failed 31 delivering stock to the ELR near Radcliffe, D1062 took part in Rainhill, and D1041 did some shoving of a 33 at Winchfield 150, plus of course Sarah Siddons, E5001, 2Bil and 4sub units. various opendays took advantage of shunting, notoriously was Longsight openday in 1991 which the night before everything that could, positioned itself, on the day itself, some locos including 76079 (which wasnt yet mainline certified) did runs up and down the shed roads for the public on the day, leading to an enquiry and complaint from SLOA (who had a monopoly on steam movements & appearance fees) iirc. It depends what your modelling, but quite a lot of Rule 1 can be applied, especially if industrial locations are considered.. D2767 (North British shunter) was regularly used on Metrolink during its conversion and was seen in Manchester Victoria in 1991, as did Thomas the Tank Engine !! A class 03, spotless in BR Blue was next to the Manchester - Liverpool mainline at Salford. Several locos have run at LUL too, which didn't require BR approval, and didnt several PDSR locos use the BR terminus ? I recall NYMR has rescued “things” before now. Full list of certified locos is here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_98 if theres any in particular, you can ask here and i’m sure the audience can confirm exactly where / when, but if proximity to a connected mainline is also in your scope, a huge amount of Rule 1 can be opened up too.
