Knickers! Wimmen's knickers!

Dougal: God, I can't wait to see what's under tomorrow's window. I bet it's a donkey or something.

Father Ted': Really? So, you've changed from your initial prediction of... what was it again? "Ruud Gullit sitting on a shed." God, Dougal, where do you get these ideas from? I bet it's just a lovely angel. What do you think's under tomorrow's window, Father?

Father Jack: A pair of feckin' women's knickers!

Father Ted: Who knows...

Father Jack: Knickers!

Father Ted: Yes, Father.

Father Jack: Women's knickers!

Father Ted: Yes, Father, Yes! Message understood.

Mentioning Ming the Merciless, he was memorably played by Charles Middleton, the rather eccentric actor son of a millionaire businessman,, who acted as a hobby in Hollywood films for 30 years, starting in films in 1920, and acting in 200+ films till his death in 1949., Famous for portraying President Lincoln, (he was a look alike), and playing the evil Emperor Ming in the Flash Gordon serials. Amazingly his specialty was song and dance........a top rated hoofer! ....a fascinating characterful actor of the old school.who is a bit forgotten these days.

Is Michael McIntyre Chinese ?.... I doubt it...therefore, No.

Is Micheal McIntyre popular ?......Seems to be,... (note small 'P')...Plucked from relative obscurity, to head the Royal Variety Performance 2010, after a couple of TV shows.

Is Micheal McIntyre funny ?....In my opinion....No

So. 1?, out of 3 isn't so good, is it ?.

What he is, though, is foisted establishment comedy, following a long line of others, before him...Too long to list here.

Now, Frankie Boyle. A very different kettle of fish.

The Danny Boyle of comedy ?...maybe.

Danny made it to the Oscars, but I think, somehow, that Frankie won't make it to the R.V.P. going by his present form :good_mini: .

What is it with the name Frank ??. All the portrayed gangsters, villains, badfellas, idiots. fools, losers, (Too long to list here)...are always called 'Frank'.

Regards, Frank. (Gallagher)

Sure, Frankie goes way over the top at times, but this type of comedy should always be a bit dangerous...! ;)

The fact he makes me laugh out loud most of the time probably says more about my warped sense of humour than his.

Oh, by the way...

DRRRIINK!

Boyle is hillarious

only needs to pull that grin, or do the squint where he tries not to laugh which makes me laugh, or when he does his posh voice :)

now Alan Partridge, is that funny? to me no, I dont get that but know lots of people who are crazy about it

to me, as Bernard Manning once said, he's as funny as a burning arphonage

Apparently, there IS a Chinese community on Craggy Island. In the episode where Ted declares that "there are no racists on Craggy Island". Then opens the door to a room full of Nazi memorabilia.

On the subject of stand-up comics, Dara O'Briain was brilliant on Live At The Apollo last week. His routine about video games had me howling.

A: Why is he popular?

B: Is he funny?

Programmes like Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo have provided a perfect platform for stand up comedians to become household names. I see the recent burst in comedians having their own shows (John Bishop's Britain, MM's Comedy Roadshow, Russell Howard's Good News) and DVDs as a bit of a resurgence for stand up comedy, and it has been headed by Michael McIntyre.

Each comedian has their own style and MM's is very observational and in his first DVD (2008?), I found I could relate to almost every joke, and even when I didn't quite relate, I still found his jokes funny. I think this is why he became popular. His happy, bubbly nature is probably what has endeared him to the nation and allowed him to become more of a television personality than a stand up comedian.

I would say that he has 'sold out'. I hate it when this phrase is applied wrongly, and I'm sure some would argue with me and say that he hasn't. This is why there is a new wave of thinking 'MM is irritating'. I have a few reasons for thinking this:

1) Other comedians used to joke that he was just experiencing his 15 minutes of fame, though by taking on other roles such as hosting popular TV shows and there have been rumours that he is to become the next judge on Britain's Got Talent (sigh...), he has managed to grip onto the limelight and stay there for longer.

2) Dara O'Briain states in his book 'Tickling the English' (a very good read) that if he sells out a venue in a city, he will just put on another night there and try to sell it out again. Michael McIntyre would rather have one night at a huge venue, such as Wembely, and spend the free nights appearing on TV or taking time off. In my opinion, this takes something away from Stand-Up comedy as it removes the intimacy created by a small venue. McIntyre doesn't talk to the crowd however, and just regurgitates the same material night in, night out so he doesn't really rely on any kind of intimacy.

3) When asked if he was flattered to have John Culshaw do an impression of him on his (then) new show a couple of years ago, he said he was not and didn't find it funny. Surely a comedian who takes himself that seriously has lost sight of what he set out to do in the first place?

To be fair to the man, he does have a family to feed and I'm sure he wants what's best for his young children.

Yes, his jokes are funny, but he has a limited range of material which is becoming slightly predictable. As I said, he does not talk to the crowd so there is little room for improvisation last night - if you want comedy like that, Dara O'Briain is a specialist, as is Frankie Boyle if you can stand him!

Rant over. Oh, and he isn't Chinese. You can't take what a stand up comedian says about himself too seriously - for example, Jimmy Carr once sarcastically said that Alan Carr is his brother, hours later, it was up on his wikipedia page!

OK, accepting that Michael Macintyre isnt Chinese - then why does he have some chinese facial characteristics? When I first saw him, I just thought "some idiot has the lights turned up too high and he's squinting into the light", but subsequent shows have shown that not to be the case.

Rant over.

Not a rant so much as a good understanding of comedy!

Incidently Dara O'Brian live in a smaller venue is an amazing experience! I much prefer smaller venues - I saw MM at Sheffield Arena last year and it's a horrible venue. Compares badly with Sheffield City Hall near by and the various small venues in Hull I've frequented...

But then seeing Eddie Izzard captivate everyone in Sheffield Arena was magical :)
