matto21
Some progress finally with my Lima Class 33. I resprayed the ends using Halfords spray paint because I wasn't happy with the patchy finish I'd achieved first time around. The blue I mixed myself, like I've said before, it may not be 100% accurate but it's a shade I'm happier with.
matto21
Received the nameplates to complete my Critter today. They are by Narrow Planet and they are exquisite - I can't recommend them enough [no connection, just a very pleased customer]. After a quick spray of red aerosol and a light sanding with a fine sanding stick to reveal the lettering they are complete. While I had my camera out I also took a picture of my Class 33 with markings and a start on weathering. I always struggle when it comes to weathering locos - I just can't seem to get it quite right. If nothing else, I hope it shows that the Lima model can be ok with a bit of basic work.
James
The 33 looks superb! (The shunter does too by the way!) Enlarging and reshaping the front windows has had a huge impact.

I think the work done to the front windows was well worth the effort and was the biggest improvement I made to the model in terms of appearance - just got to do the boring bit now of actually glazing it! matto21
Hello Just a few progress shots of my Lima Class 33. As you can see I've made a start on glazing using clear plastic [taken from packaging] individually cut to shape. I've also made a start on applying a bit more weathering but it's not really that visible in the photos.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 23, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2011 Looks very good B), have you thought about changing the wheels? the flanges are very noticeable from these low angles.
matto21
Looks very good B), have you thought about changing the wheels? the flanges are very noticeable from these low angles. Yeah I agree, the wheels look awful - I see why they are nicknamed pizza cutters! Having said that though, I have no plans to replace them at the moment - funds are running low and I can live with them for the time being.
matto21
Just by way of showing my progress, here's a photo of my Lima Class 33 so far although the glazing still hasn't been completed. Still needs some more weathering too. BTW this photo was also shown on my Talerddig thread so it's nothing new [sorry]. Can anyone recommend the best method for removing weathering powders from a loco body? Having seen the 08 article in MR I'm really tempted to revisit mine but I'd beed to strip it down first. Failing that, what's the best method for removing car aerosol paint?
matto21
Bore da With the 'worst' of the house move now over, and a sense of normality returning, while unpacking some boxes I came across these 3 locos which have been on my 'to-do' list for ages. First up is an old Lima Class 31, 31455 'Our Eli' in Regional Railways livery [one of my favourite liveries] which I'm tempted to detail and repaint to represent 31327. Second is Bachmann Class 37, 37678, which again I'd like to detail and weather [but leave in the factory applied Red Stripe livery]. I need to obtain suitable detailing parts from somewhere as I don't have the original Bachmann items. Third is my Bachmann 08 that I've already repainted and detailed once. I can't decide if I'm happy with the weathering and having read the 08 masterclass in the recent MR, I'm tempted to redo it completely. Now I've found these models, the next task is to negotiate a suitable modelling area and set things up - easier said than done!
James
Looking forward to seeing the 31 This might be worth a look too - http://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/project_lima31mods.html and there might be another thread knocking round about bodging a class 31 with Hornby parts somewhere.... matto21
Cheers James, yes that article along with another 'certain' thread about Class 31's will be very useful!
matto21
Bore da As an attempt to do something different, I've been detailing this Bachmann J72. It's the first time I've ever done anything to a steam loco. Most of the 'additions' are an assortment of wire, plastic rod and some offcuts of plastic card. In my usual style, everything has been bodged together and is not accurate, just representations! Still plenty of work to do, but painting the shiny wheel 'rims' and coupling rods made a huge difference!
James
Matt, that's looking rather good it doesn't show that this is the first steam loco you've done; you've picked up on some details that others often miss!
matto21
Cheers James, it's been enjoyable doing something 'non-diesel' for a change even if it has been really fiddly!
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted December 4, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 4, 2011 Hi Matt, I love Rhian the Critter! It's been beautifully modelled - especially with the weathering and painting and the nameplate. I also like your recent additions to the fleet, and as James says - you wouldn't know that is your first steamer. Superb work. Jam.
NickL2008
"Bore Da" lol? 31 sounds interesting Matt, the sandbox on the rear of the steam engine looks particularly neat! NL
matto21
Hi Matt, I love Rhian the Critter! It's been beautifully modelled - especially with the weathering and painting and the nameplate. I also like your recent additions to the fleet, and as James says - you wouldn't know that is your first steamer. Superb work. Jam. Thanks Jam, the Critter is a favourite of mine and has been named after my lovely lady [got me in the good books for a bit!], as to the J72, as I said above, it's been really nice to do something a bit different for a change! "Bore Da" lol? 31 sounds interesting Matt, the sandbox on the rear of the steam engine looks particularly neat! NL Bore da - good morning in Welsh in case you're wondering! The sandbox is the result of much botching with tiny bits of plastic card. Making a duplicate for the other side was a challenge to say the least! Noswaith dda! matto21
My new year's resolution is to try and finish some of those projects that I never seem to complete! I'm better than I used to be [wagons only painted on one side!] but still never seem to fully finish things. Below are some wagon kits that need completing: Parkside Vanwide 1 - has been painted and weathered but no markings [been like this for several months]. Parkside Vanwide 2 - needs painting, weathering, couplings and markings. Parkside 24.5T mineral - needs flat varnishing [been like this for months] Parkside 16T mineral - needs painting, weathering, couplings and markings. Parkside Pipe wagon - needs weathering, couplings and markings. Dapol Lowmac - has been lying around half completed for well over a year! There's loads of other things too!

matto21
It's good to try and clear a few started projects! I've recently been trying to do the same! Well I've made a start! The unpainted Vanwide has now been painted. The next step is to fade it a little, although not to the level of my other Vanwide. I also have markings for both vans so this should also be done soon! I had a nightmare painting the Van, this is actually the 3rd coat of red I applied, both previous coats looked awful and had to be stripped off but the final coat of red and the grey went on with no problem...phew! Next I need to touch up the grey overspray on the buffers [i forgot to mask them] before fading it.
matto21
Some progress with my second RF liveried van. Compared to the photo above, the van's paintwork has now been faded, the markings have been applied [individual numbers - never again!] and I've started the weathering process with a few washes. The ends haven't been touched yet hence them looking rather clean.
Lukasz
Its looking really good Matt. Just spent an enjoyable 15 minutes reading through the thread and have to say it's all very impressive. When funds permit I too will be bashing about a Lima 37 body to become 516 in Loadhaul colours. Also lovely work on that little shunter. cheers, Lukasz

The 37 wasn't such a success, although I think it's down to the paint job more than anything. Be interesting to see how you get on with yours when you start it. Having seen the 08 article in MR I'm really tempted to revisit mine but I'd beed to strip it down first. Failing that, what's the best method for removing car aerosol paint? Only just seen this thread. Can't help with the car aerosol removal, but when I make a pig's ear of weathering with powders, a cotton bud dipped in iso-propyl alcohol and a little (or a lot) of rubbing usually gets me back to somewhere near starting point.
