I kinda need to as I was getting a lot of dust from the MDF baseboards. Happy to say now though that the dust is no more.

PaulWarb
Hello I hope I'm not asking you to repeat anything - I couldn't find any dimensions. It would be useful to know the overall length and width of the layout and also width of the boards. Keep up the good work. Regards Paul
captinfranko
Hi Paul. The rough dimensions are that each of the boards, left and right that is, are 3 feet wide from the wall to the gangway. From the back wall to the "front" of the layout is 9 feet. The reach from the control panel to the back wall is 3 feet. Again these are rough and the actual dimensions escape my mind at this time. MattWallace
This is awesome - I've been on that journey as well so it's great to see the results from someone else who's there at the moment! Kinda makes me wish I'd spent more time in the garage last night...

Kinda makes me wish I'd spent more time in the garage last night... Thanks very much. I am still trying to keep focussed on doing one job at once. I see things that need doing and have to reign myself in.
captinfranko
So here is the new plan for the layout. The one change I have made from the plan is that I moved one of the points on the run in to the station. But in general, the plan still stands. Rammy
Just had an interesting read threough your thread. Really impressed by your work so far, and especially like the station area you have created. We all try to make our first layouts as big as possible, but I am glad to see that you have retained most of your hard work on the station. Looking forward to your future updates. captinfranko
Just a quick update on todays work. I managed to get out to the garage after work and carried on with the white lines at the edge of the station platforms. I also positioned the steps that I had built for the main station building and was quite impressed. Now I just need to figure out how to paint them. The next job is to line the edges of the platform. I have cut the plasticard brick sheets to the right hieght but I am unsure as to how to proceed with weathering them so if anyone has any hints or tips they would be greatly appreciated. captinfranko
Since I restarted the layout I have been trying to build a low relief shopping centre for the area near to the station. Here is my current progress... As you can see, the idea is that there will be five shops on the frontage with a shop "coming soon" that will bend around the corner and away. I plan to include Ann Summers, which is the black shop, The perfume Shop, Thorntons and Costa. Here is a close up of the perfume shop as it stands at the moment. I am also doing the interiors of the shops. I wanted to do this because although the shopping centre will be low relief it will face away from the edge of the layout and so I wanted something that I could see as I looked down. Here is the inside of what will be Thorntons. You can see the counter across the back wall and the beginnings of some of the shelving.
Removed a/c
Making nice progress. Stores look great and will look forward to seeing them finished. Regards Scott
captinfranko
This isn't much of an update but it does show my plans for other areas of the right hand side of the layout which I have christened the "Downtown" area. The area directly in front of my control panel is a bit of a strange shape and size and it took me a long time to figure out what to do with it. I have now decided to build up the area using a McDonalds resturant (which is actually the Bachmann drive thru restaurant). The pictures below show the basic layout and design of the area. I will be adding foliage to the area between the outside of the car park and the track and then building up the other area to look like its in the middle of the city that I am trying to create... Guest
Aha this made me laugh... ...a couple of weeks back I had a Geography field trip which counted towards my final grade and part of it involved questioning people and asking them things about the town centre etc. Anyway, it started to rain really hard so I dashed for the nearest cover I could find because my questionnaires were getting all wet.... little did I know I was standing outside Ann Summers . I looked up to find a women staring at me with a very strange look, she told me I was too young to shop there and should leave immediately. I tried to explain to her that I was only under here for shelter - she was having none of it lol Bit more on topic here - love the layout, coming along really well. And I really like the idea of the McDonald's restaurant. Keep it up! Oli

captinfranko
Today I have had a break from the street in front of the station and started work on the area that will contain the McDonalds. I have glued matchsticks down as curb stones and begun pouring some of the polyfilla (cement). However I have no run out and so nothing else will be done on this area until I can get some more tomorrow. The restuarant will not of course sit on the track, it will go in the middle of the shot. Plus, whilst this shot looks a bit rough it does look better now that I have begun pouring concrete.
captinfranko
Just a quick update of what has been happening since the last update. Progress has been painfully slow with my scratchbuild of a shopping centre front and so I decided to push ahead with the high street opposite the station with a slightly different approach. As you can see, I have procured two of the Bachmann low-relief department stores and once I have a working printer again I will print off new shop signs to cover up the Beatties sign. I have also stuck paving slabs down to "pedastrianise" this "zone". I just now need a lot of people and some more detailed street dressings. You can also see that I have added the majority of the road markings. The solid white line to the right of the pictures marks the boundary between the road and what will become a bus lane leading directly to the station car park. Here is said car park, with a few cars parked...must not be a very busy time! There are still a lot of jobs to do on this side and indeed section of the layout. I intend to begin weathering the brick plasticard around the platforms soon and I still have the pavements next to the station building and the bus lane to pour (polyfilla still needs to be bought). Black Sheep
Don't forget to put a badly parked car or two in the car parks! your mc donalds restaurant (and a fair bit of the layout if i'm honest) reminds me a bit of Coventry when I lived there a couple of years ago. might be worth looking at the mc donalds opposite canley sainsburys for ideas for what to do with the grounds surrounding the restaurant. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=canley+sainsburys&hl=en&ll=52.403283,-1.556926&spn=0.007384,0.01929&client=safari&oe=UTF-8&hq=canley+sainsburys&radius=15000&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=52.403198,-1.557031&panoid=SOdFTfoGXsm0VOSgAHsiYg&cbp=12,225,,0,0 hopefully that will link you to street view so you can have a poke around

Black Sheep
indeed, there are normally a few modified hatch backs, a couple of moped riders and a bunch of kids on bmx / mountain bikes hanging around there. it's near an ex-council estate so a bit of a somewhere to go for them. captinfranko
I do intend do to something like that, the only problem is getting hold of 00 gauge modern cars. I am also starting to think abit more about my own scratch buildings. Could anyone recommend a good place to buy foam board?
Black Sheep
most art shops stock foamboard the ideal cars for modern (current) image are corsas, saxos and similar along with anything small and 6+ years older not readily available really.
Jack00
Yeah, Saxo, 106, civic, astra, cheap supermini's that have been slammed and tinted. Big exhaust... Should be easy enough to achieve. Maybe even a White sticky label cut to size and use as a sunstrip on the windscreen. Single windscreen wiper in the mid position would look ace! There are some really great 00 scale cars around. Even if it's a mk1 escort or mini, normally easier to get hold of than the more modern common cars. But would fit into a modern scene if modified?? Jack. captinfranko
I like the idea of a white sticky label Jack, I might have to try that. It's strange that there doesn't seem to much about. There are plenty of buses and lorries but not a great amount of cars. I have the Mazda's and the Range Rovers, but very little else. I also have the Beetle in "herbie 53" livery but it does look a bit out of place. The eventual plan is to create a mini dealership on the scenic side of the layout, so I can experiment with different colours and modifications of cars for that.
