Highland Baby Sulzers

Recommended Posts

Design changes impacted on the fuel and boiler water tanks of the class 24 fleet during their construction. These were principally weight-saving measures, and happened irrespective of the locos' intended allocations. Thanks go once more to Derby Sulzers Dave for permission to plagiarise his resource so liberally. :D

Changes started as far back as D5050 - where the tank wrapped round the battery box it no longer reached up to solebar level, creating a shallower end section. This production change affected locomotives up to D5120, built at Crewe, Darlington and Derby.

This batch of locomotives included the Gateshead allocated machines which were later designated for the Tyne Dock - Consett iron ore services - for this their steam heating boilers and water tanks were removed permanently, and three of these would later become Highland Skinheads: 24102, 24103, 24104.

Over time some members of this group received the lighter water tank, this was shortened and created a gap between the fuel & water tanks under the battery boxes. Locomotives receiving the shorterr tank included Skinhead 24113 and Mohicans 24118, 24119.

Other machines saw the circular gauges added to the tanks, on both tanks these included Skinhead 24113 and Mohicans 24115, 24116, 24117 and 24120.

From D5121, part-way through the Derby build for the ScR, the design of the water tank was changed. To reduce its weight the length was reduced creating a gap between it and the fuel tank beneath the battery boxes.

Many of this group would later be fitted with circular gauges for both the fuel and water tanks, particularly true for the ScR examples, including 24121, 24123, 24124, 24125, 24128 and 24129.

Several locomotives only had the circular gauge added to the fuel tank, these included 24126, 24127, 24130 and 24132.

The Haymarket disfigurement of blinding the HBS' eyes used three basic shapes of blanking plate.

The neatest, round design was no doubt the costliest, and thus only appeared for definite on 24115, 24116 and 24118.

Square plates appeared on 24117, 24119, 24120, 24121, 24123, 24125 and 24130, whereas 24124, 24126 and 24129 seem to have longer, oblong blanking plates.

EDITED 17/4/11 to include this:

Post #125 below shows 24127 withdrawn at Doncaster depot 3-10-76 still with headlights.

There's no definitive photographic evidence for what style was fitted to 24128 or 24132.

EDITED 8/4/11 to include data from post 109.

The battery isolating switch was accessed through the small (grille-sized) panel towards the B-end. The two part lids hinged top and bottom were replaced by a single piece door hinged on the left or right on certain locos: 24117 (L), 24120 (L), 24123 ( R ), 24125 (L), 24126 (L), 24129 ( R ). The status of 24127 has not been established.

There were only a few 47/4s in green TOPS and they didn't last long. I think the last one, was the WR's 47494. This one, is probably one of the ER's bunch.

It probably would indeed, one from the ex-1101 - 11 batch. As you say they didnt last long: living in Hull and regularly being at Doncaster, York or elsewhere on the ECML, these machines were always around and yet I dont knowingly remember seeing one in green TOPS.

Here's another one of those "Emulsion Anomalies". Despite how it looks, 5147 IS green. I have no idea, WHY it was repainted/bulled up in green in 1974. ...

Crewe Works did a similar thing in the early '70s; a loco would enter for overhaul in green and it would exit after overhaul, looking for all the world, like it had been repainted green. Maybe 24147 had a minor O/H somewhere and they bulled up the paintwork as it wasn't TOO bad and sent her out again.

Despite Bob's preoccupation with this blue/green crossover businesswink.gif, I do believe it is almost always down to light/emulsion, combined with natural changes in the paint as it ages and weathers. If you think about it in general terms, dark green and dark blue are in any case colours which are very easily confused in poor light. I have slides of my own from this period which show this blueish tinge, yet I know the locos were indisputably green when I took them.

I dont personally think there's *too* much mystery about 24147 either - as you say, lots of 47s went through Crewe immediately pre-TOPS with patch painting, revarnishing and application of asymmetric numbers and yet looking as if they'd had a full repaint.

Did any of the 5114-5132 series ever carry Green with Full Yellow Ends livery? All the pics posted on here so far, suggest not, but surely ONE of them lasted long enough....

Lasted long enough in theory, yes, but I'm inclined to suggest that the ScR was quite ambivalent (or at least inconsistent) about applying FYEs. A while ago somebody was asking for pics of any ScR 20s in GFYE and I dont think anything came up - most if not all of the native locos went from GSYE straight to blue, or were transferred to the LMR during that period. The Claytons and 27s probably go against this (which is why I say inconsistent) and yet only one or possibly two 26s are known to have been done - further evidence perhaps that Inverness at least wasnt in too much of a hurry about it.

The 47/4s that I'm aware of, which carried Green TOPS livery are; 47494 (1936), 47520 (1103), 47522 (1105), 47523 (1106), 47525 (1108), 47526 (1109) & 47527 (1110) and a new photo has turned up, claiming to be 47516, which is still "in the balance" as a misprint, for 47526 (the number isn't clearly readable).

As regards ScR 20s in GFYE, the only one I can come up with, is D8123, from an undated photo with no location details, although there is a Class 50 in the background, so possibly on ScR metals. There were other 20s on the ScR with GFYE, but I don't think they were "Native" - D8015, D8018, D8027 among others.

As far as I'm aware, 5335 was the only GFYE 26. This lasted well into 1973 and was the last green 26 of all. It had lost its white stripe as well.

The Haymarket disfigurement of blinding the HBS' eyes used three basic shapes of blanking plate.

The neatest, round design was no doubt the costliest, and thus only appeared for definite on 24115, 24116 and 24118.

Square plates appeared on 24117, 24119, 24120, 24123, 24125 and 24130, whereas 24126 and 24129 seem to have longer, oblong blanking plates.

There's no definitive photographic evidence for what style was fitted to 24124, 24127 or 24132.

Chard, The RailOnline photo gallery http://www.rail-online.co.uk has some additional shots of the Inverness HBS's though with it's rather threatening T&Cs I can't add the links until I've emailed them. There is a bit of additional info available to add to the above;

24121 had square plates fitted, and 24124 what appears to be the longer oblong type. Still outstanding of course 24127, 24128 & 24132

The photo of 24124 however clearly shows it partly stripped at Swindon Works on 1/5/77.

Here's one for the Inverness Class 24 spotters!

5132 with mystery - a small square blanking plate to the left of the left-hand headlight (at the No.2 End only).

Here during the 60s (undated)

Still there in 1968 and in the mid 70s

It may well have been on the No.1 end as well, but those available shots of that end are not clear enough to see.

Prior use for the Royal Train?

Prior use for the Royal Train?

could be bob, i'm sure i've seen pics of a 25 so fitted, albeit with a round blanking plate

i think there was a 'standard' royal train comms line, reminds me of a pic i've seen of 2 warships with a cable that was draped along the roof/sides. at some point there must've been the instruction to have the cable go through the locos?

edit: had a look here http://www.derbysulzers.com/royaltrain.html

perhaps different locos had the wire come through in different positions, then plated over with round/square plates

There's a photo of D5132 in 1967 in "Sixties Spotting Days Around the ScR" with some fairly severe looking impact damage at the number 1 end. There is damage to the driver's side but there's another HBS cluttering up the shot so I can't see how far across the cab it extends. It may be that the blanking plate at the No.1 end, if fitted, was lost in the subsequent repair.

As far as I'm aware, 5335 was the only GFYE 26. This lasted well into 1973 and was the last green 26 of all. It had lost its white stripe as well.

And here she is:

Still with white stripe, non-matching bodyside door (Class 27?), and in one of my other favourite locations - Buckie on the Moray Coast network, penultimate freight. What a photo. No apologies for going O/T. :P

An obvious thought, and some did get them I think. However, I think 5335's was diverted from the cl. 33 programme, or ordered as a spare at the time they were being built - it's (typically) not in the book I thought it was in, but I have seen a very early pic of it with that door, dated prior to the introduction of the 27s.

No apologies for going O/T. :P

No complaints from me, it's a gorgeous shot.

Here's ambivalence for you Ian - 20020 In GFYE 1978? at Inverness.... http://www.railphotoprints.co.uk/index/detail/2478/20020-Inverness-010678-RP11.jpg.html [Rail Photoprints]

Cheers Bob, I've seen other shots of it. I should have said, the query was about GFYE during the period that it was 'current'. 20020 was a transfer in from the South, post-TOPS AFAIK and thus not applied 'native', so to speak. In fact I think prior to said transfer of a few late-surviving green 20s, I think the ScR had been all-blue for a while.

The ScR cleared out its green locos THREE times.

The first was in 1976 with the repainting of the final green 08s, then 20146 & 20149 came up from Toton in 1976, both green. These went blue during 1977, giving the ScR an all-blue fleet again.......until, green 20020 was sent up from Tinsley in late 1977.

Amazing that D5335 went GFYE, way back in 1968 but no more were ever done, even though there were still green 26s three years later. There is a so-far unproven rumour that D5324 had FYE for a short time, but I'll not be holding my breath for a photo.....

Dammed Johnny Foreigners! - Hence I was slightly puzzled by the date - When I started at St.Rollox in 74' everything that stood still seemed to be getting painted blue and yet a year earlier when I was still a humble spotter word of green loco at Eastfield spread quickly meaning a quick trip to depot to see what it was......

I thought maybe you were bringing up D5127 (24127) which apart from being very shy on the photograph front, allegedly had the 'as built' box at one end, and winged at the other - both the available photo's that've come up so far only clearly show the No.1 end!

Last link at Doncaster confirms that rumour, number 2 end most definitely has got WINGS!!!!
