The Mike Morant Collection

Re6/6

Does anybody know anything about what has happened/might happen to Mike Morant's fotopic pictures? It was another large archive of good steam pictures too good to lose.

I'm afraid not. At least, nothing has appeared on SEMG where Mike is a member to that effect. That said, being SEMG it might be a little while before they cotton on to fotopic's demise...

I hadn’t realised that my SmugMug site had been mentioned within the RMWeb environment by Martin who, coincidentally, sent me a caption enhancement only a few days ago. Martin’s pointer was back in July 2012 when the site was brand new but it has expanded considerably since then. As it’s safe to assume that this forum’s member ship is web literate then the best place to start a review of what is there is the url to the Home Page:

http://tinyurl.com/cjrqdt9

The Most recent Uploads gallery contains well over 300 images at the moment and it’s my intention to move those images into their specific galleries within the next week or so by which time there will be a lot more new pics ready to upload.

I’ve noted that RMWeb has a message board devoted to French railway matters and so it might worthwhile taking a peek at the 50+ French images that I recently uploaded. It had been my intention to rework 200 or so DB images as well but I’m not sure about the time factor involved.

One hopes that what is already on my images site proves to be pleasurable viewing for you.

New web site material January 2014

It’s been nearly 4 months since I last mentioned the recent uploads to my web site. The latest British material is located here:

http://tinyurl.com/occex4e

Pick and choose whatever suits your interest.

........... and for those whose railway interests encompass Europe there’s some recently uploaded mostly Réseau Breton French material here:

It’s been two years since I last ‘plugged’ my SmugMug web site here and it has grown considerably during that time but I’m reluctant to burden e-groups and forums with continual plugs as I feel that they become self-defeating as time goes by. However, there’s some new material on my web site which, hopefully, will prove to be of interest to this forum’s members. I’ve reverted to putting all new British images into a single gallery as it’s easier for me to manage it that way. There are a few model railway images within this selection scanned from glass negatives and they are the only model railway images in my collection. This is, after all, a model railways forum and perhaps someone can tell us all exactly what the origins are of the depicted models.

Much of the caption material is accurate but I should particularly like to know the dates for two of the modern traction shots taken on the Weymouth Harbour Tramway and background information on the BEA transfer bus would also be appreciated as well as the location of that vehicle.

Thank you for your indulgence.

Rgds,

Mike M.

Thanks Mike.

Some great additions there. The Cravens on the Braintree branch is wonderful.

It might be a copy, who knows, but at least it is viewable by enthusiasts which is one hundred times better than being filed away in a dark cupboard somewhere slowly fading away, as many transparencies from that era must be doing by now.

In the last 3 months I've replaced all the previous Recent Uploads with a new batch of vintage material and one hopes that there is something within it to interest you:

https://mikemorant.smugmug.com/Latest-uploads-and-queries

Most of the queries pertaining to this lot have been satisfactorily answered and incorporated into the captions but there is, as ever, one annoyance that awaits a viewer's knowledge and wisdom. It's on the LMSR but in BR days:

https://mikemorant.smugmug.com/Latest-uploads-and-queries/Recent-uploads-M/i-tcXckKB/A

The location has been suggested as Littleborough or Swinton but I have no idea where it is.

It looks like it might be Diggle on the ex-LNWR Manchester - Huddersfield line.

This query picture looks to be 41298 on July 3rd 1966.

There is an almost identical picture in this months steam railway. Chances of the same cars and boats being parked in the same place would be a bit too remote to not be the same date.

Thank you for your input on this subject. The confusion at my end stems from the ebay seller's description which stated that the loco is 41224 but it's obvious from the detailed scan of the slide that the rightmost digit, the only nearly legible one, is either a 6 or an 8.

I shall pop along to my local WHS and have a quick gander at SR. It wouldn't surprise me if the published shot is actually this one.

Had a look at SR and the published picture (by Peter Zabek I think) was taken from the same vantage point but is otherwise considerably different from mine.

Great to see that this site is still thriving. It is one of the best album sites I have found a remains a favourite for browsing.

Such compliments are always welcome. Thank you. LNWR glass negatives plus some 1930-ish Royal Scots (also glass) are next in line for upload.

LNWR/LMSR pix as mentioned above are now in the relevant gallery .............

I think the captions are reasonably comprehensive but there are a few location questions plus one shot of an LNWR 4-4-0 that definitely requires some expert help.

This is an interesting shot of a Hawksworth Autocoach on the Lyme Regis branch.

I know some 2MTs were push-pull fitted but I assume they were not compatible with the GWR system. It looks as if the coach is being conventionally hailed since the can is coupled next to the loco. I gather 1462 was tried on the branch (presumably with the auto-coach). I didn't realise it left the coach behind when it left.

It didn't.  1462's less than successful trial was, I think, in 1958.  Trailers returned after a gap of 4-5 years following the retirement of the Adams radials.  By this time the shortages of trailers which plagued the WR for many years were a thing of the past.

I can't leave a comment as it seems to want me to log in, but I believe there's another colour shot of this occasion showing Dr Ian C Allen and the Rev. Teddy Boston standing on the platform slightly right of where this shot ends.

This picture I believe is in the northeats somewhere as that's an NER 3rd behind the loco.

This one I think is a Saltburn - Newcastle service as the all steel artic set behind the 2 NER carriages were built for this route in (I think) 1938.

Just to let you know that I did receive your comment sent via my web site. That particular loco was auto-fitted but I think it wasn't in p-p mode when this shot was taken which is also suggested in Chris's response on this forum.

This is a constant source of annoyance for both the SmugMug sites' viewers and the owners. The leaver of the comment must be either a Facebook or Twitter member according to rules laid down by SmugMug. I think the alleged 'problem' is that the interface is poorly designed as one is confronted with a small window that seems to leave one with no choice but to click on 'The Kiss of Death' (that's the cross at the top, right corner of the window) and close it. However, it just a window and windows can all be moved. If one moves that window upwards then all is revealed in the form of an OK button. However, there is still the requirement that one must be a member of a social networking group.

Thanks for those supplementary notes both of which have been added to the captions.
